A Costarican Christmas
December in Costa Rica is a time of joy, traditions, and
celebrations. One of the most unique events is the celebration of Dia del Niño Jesus. This special day is marked by families coming together to honor the birth of Jesus with prayers and songs. Unlike in some countries, Costa Rican children receive their gifts from Niño Jesus, instead of Santa Claus. Another important aspect of December in Costa Rica is the preparation of tamales. Families gather around to make these delicious parcels filled with corn dough, meat, and vegetables. It is a tradition that brings everyone together, often over a cup of ponche, a sweet fruit punch, or rompope, a kind of eggnog. The country also hosts multiple festivals during this month. For example, in San José, the capital, you can find the Festival de la Luz, which features a parade of colorful floats and dazzling lights. Costa Ricans have many superstitions related to these festivities, like wearing yellow underwear for good luck in the New Year. Speaking of the new year, the celebrations continue with fireworks and parties. Many also take the opportunity to clean their homes thoroughly to welcome the new year with a fresh start. The first week of January is celebrated with the arrival of the Reyes Magos, the Three Wise Men, who bring small gifts to children, extending the festive spirit even further. December is full of warmth and light in Costa Rica, making it a magical time for everyone. Come and experience the joyous traditions and learn about their cultural superstitions while savoring a hot cup of ponche and a plate of tamales. Personal questions: 1. Do you celebrate Christmas? 2.
