Climate Adaptation and Resilience Initiative(CLARE)
The project
The CLimate Adaptation and REsilience initiative (CLARE) is a UK-Canada framework research
programme on Climate Adaptation and Resilience, aiming to enable socially inclusive and
sustainable action to build resilience to climate change and natural hazards in Africa and Asia-
Pacific. The CLARE Research pillar supports a portfolio of carefully selected research projects,
collectively linking up short- and long-term climate change adaptation issues. The research under
each of these projects is being carried out through transdisciplinary research partnerships led or
co-led by southern researchers.
A key part of CLARE’s theory of change is to support research partnerships, produce knowledge
and innovation, strengthen capacity and pursue research impact in support of transformational
change. This is expected to require individual research projects as well as collaboration and co-
creation across the research projects. The latter will be achieved through identifying and pursuing
some “threads”— research questions about substantive issues or challenges that cut across multiple
research projects and where findings have potential for transformational change.
Based on inputs from projects doing relevant work, a working group of designated project
representatives will convene to weave their contributions together to answer each thread research
question and publish the findings. Each thread working group will have dedicated support from a
post-doctoral researcher, supervised by a senior researcher involved in a CLARE project. The
CLARE Research for Impact (R4I) Hub is providing initial support in convening the thread group,
and will support efforts to develop complementary knowledge products to help translate academic
findings into use. The CLARE Team at the UK FCDO and Canada’s IDRC will have oversight of
the thread and can help to support links with project
Position: Post-Doctoral Researcher
Location: The position will be located at the Department of Geography, Population and
Environmental Studies, University of Nairobi
Job description
Working directly under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Postdoctoral Researcher
will be required to:
• Define, design and lead the research aiming to respond to the identified research
question, by tapping into, bringing together and – if relevant – supplementing the work of
the relevant CLARE research projects.
• Convene a Thread working group at least quarterly to discuss potential inputs and
progress with the CLARE researchers who have volunteered to contribute to this research
question.
• In between meetings, there is a knowledge management platform available for each
Thread group to share documents, share updates, and poll group members. This platform
can be used to maintain momentum and get feedback.
• The post doc would do much of the analysis (e.g. literature review, interviewing project
teams, follow up analysis), as well as coordinating with CLARE researchers
to produce collaborative journal articles related to the thread topic.
• The post doc, with support from their supervisor, is expected to be primary point of
contact on progress updates on the Thread to the CLARE Team at IDRC and UK FCDO.
• Update supervisor on progress and get guidance on next steps.
Expected outputs
• The primary output(s) that the post-doc would be expected to help the group produce
would be academic publications.
• Depending on the thread, a range of possible knowledge translation activities could also
be envisioned and delivered with the support of the CLARE Research for impact (R4I)
Hub to improve the likelihood that the thread contributes to improved policy, practice and
influence in key international spaces, including:
o Support the development of non-academic publications (e.g. policy briefs, journal
opinion pieces, IPCC reports).
o Sharing findings at events (e.g. conference presentations, sector relevant
meetings/workshops, UNFCCC Climate weeks, UNFCCC COP).
o Seizing influencing opportunities to integrate learning into policy or practice (e.g.
national policies, regional bodies).
Requirements
• A PhD awarded in the last 5 years in a relevant field (e.g. environment, climate change,
development studies, sociology, Anthropology or another discipline relevant to the
Thread topic).
• Demonstrated ability to produce peer-reviewed research articles in international journals.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (fluency in another
language relevant to CLARE, including French, would be an asset).
• Desire and ability to work in an interdisciplinary research team setting.
• Preference for candidates from the global South.
• They should show evidence of being in research activity in the last two (2) years and
preferably published at least two peer reviewed scientific papers based on their research.
• Ability to begin the work no later than September 2024
Terms of appointment
The post doc position will be full time funded for 2 years. The salary is consolidated Ksh.
200,000 per month.
