3. Preface

This report is a detailed account of my summer internship as an Electrical Engineer at the

132KV Power Station. The internship provided me with a valuable opportunity to apply
theoretical knowledge gained during my Electrical and Electronic Engineering studies to
real-world scenarios.

During this period, I was exposed to various critical aspects of power station operations,
including control and panel relays, transformers, current transformers, circuit breakers,
lightning arresters, CVTs (Capacitor Voltage Transformers), DC systems, and battery sets. I
also gained insight into the overall transmission system, which is essential for ensuring
reliable and efficient power distribution.

The purpose of this report is to document my learning experiences, practical skills acquired,
and the contributions made during the internship. It aims to provide a comprehensive
overview of the tasks performed and the technical knowledge gained, reflecting the hands-
on experience obtained at the power station.

4. About the Company

4.1 Introduction

The 132KV Grid Substation (GSS) located at Dhaula Kunwa is an integral part of the
Rajasthan Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (RVPNL) network. Established to support the
electricity distribution infrastructure, this substation plays a crucial role in managing the
high-voltage electrical transmission system. It ensures the reliable distribution of electrical
power to various regions, maintaining the stability and efficiency of the power supply.

4.2 Objectives and Functions

The primary objectives of the 132KV GSS Dhaula Kunwa include:

- Voltage Regulation: Maintaining stable voltage levels within the network to ensure
efficient power delivery and reduce losses.
- Load Management: Balancing the electrical load across the network to prevent overload
conditions and ensure uninterrupted power supply.
- Fault Management: Detecting and isolating faults to minimize the impact on the overall
power system and facilitate quick restoration of services.
- System Integration: Integrating various components of the power transmission network,
including transformers, circuit breakers, and relays, to ensure smooth operation and
coordination.

4.3 Key Components

- Transformers: The substation utilizes step-up and step-down transformers to adjust

voltage levels as required. These transformers are essential for matching the voltage levels
of incoming and outgoing power to those suitable for transmission and distribution.
- Control and Panel Relays: These devices monitor and control the operations of the
substation, including the protection and automation systems.
- Current Transformers (CTs): Used for measuring current and providing input for metering
and protective relays.
- Circuit Breakers: Protect the system from overloads and short circuits by interrupting the
flow of current in fault conditions.
- Lightning Arresters: Protect the equipment from high-voltage surges caused by lightning
strikes.
- Capacitor Voltage Transformers (CVTs): Measure high voltage levels and provide signals to
control and protection systems.

4.4 Operational Procedures

The substation operates 24/7, with a dedicated team of engineers and technicians
responsible for the following tasks:
- Routine Maintenance: Regular inspection and maintenance of equipment to ensure
optimal performance and prevent breakdowns.
- Emergency Response: Swift action to address any faults or failures, minimizing downtime
and ensuring the safety of personnel and equipment.
- System Monitoring: Continuous monitoring of electrical parameters and operational status
through advanced control systems.

4.5 Contribution to the Power Sector

The 132KV GSS Dhaula Kunwa is vital for maintaining the reliability and efficiency of the
power supply in the region. Its operations support the broader goals of RVPNL in delivering
stable and consistent electricity to consumers, contributing to the economic and social
development of the area.
This substation exemplifies the critical role that high-voltage grid substations play in the
modern power transmission network, underscoring the importance of advanced technology
and skilled personnel in ensuring effective power distribution.
