Q. 1 a Draw the voltage and current vs time graphical representation of the CLO1 C2 PLO1 4
reverse recovery characteristics of the diode.

Q. 2 a Differentiate the critically damped, under damped and overdamped case CLO1 C2 PLO1 6
of the circuit, when diode is connected to the RLC load.

figure. If switch S1 is closed at t = 0, determine (a) the peak diode current,
(b) the energy dissipated in the resistor R, and (c) the capacitor voltage

Q. 1 (a) Explain the working of an inverter, by using any circuit diagram. CLO1 C2 PLO1 4
(b) Explain the harmonics in an inverter and how they can be analyzed? CLO1 C2 PLO1 4
(c) Explain the speed control of dc motor, using any circuit / block diagram? CLO1 C2 PLO1 4

Q. 2 (a) Explain any cyclo-converter, using circuit diagram & output waveforms. CLO1 C2 PLO1 4
(b) Explain motoring, regenerative, and braking mechanisms in dc-dc converter. CLO1 C2 PLO1 4
(c) Explain the switching of the 4-quadrant chopper, by drawing its circuit diagram CLO1 C2 PLO1 4
and identify the switches in each quadrant during turn on & off.

Q. 3 (a) Differentiate the power transistor & power thyristor. CLO2 C4 PLO2 3
(b) Differentiate any type of controlled & un-controlled rectifier having RL load, by CLO2 C4 PLO2 9
using the circuit diagram, mathematical equations, and output waveforms.

Q. 4 (a) Design the Snubber circuit for the protection of an SCR. CLO3 C6 PLO3 4
(b) Design the Darlington pair transistor to increase the amplification factor to limit CLO3 C6 PLO3 4
the required base current.
(c) 10 thyristors are used in a string to withstand a dc voltage of = 15 kV. The CLO3 C6 PLO3 4
maximum leakage current and recovery charge differences of thyristors are 10
-sharing resistance
Formulate and determine the
maximum steady-state and transient voltage sharing.

Q. 5 (a) A diode circuit with LC load, as shown in Fig. 1. with the capacitor having an CLO2 C4 PLO2 4
initial voltage, (t = 0) = - = - 220 V; capacitance, C = 8 & inductance,
L=2 When switch S1 is closed at t = 0, calculate (a) the peak current, (b)
the conduction time of the diode, and (c) the final steady-state capacitor voltage.
(b) The dc converter having dc input voltage of = 220 V and has a resistive load CLO2 C4 PLO2 8
of R = 10 . When the converter switch remains on, its voltage drop is =2
V, and the chopping frequency is f = 1 kHz. If the duty cycle is 10% characteristic
curve shown in Fig. 2, calculate (a) the average and rms output voltage, (b) the
converter efficiency, (c) the effective input resistance of the converter, (d) the
ripple factor of the output voltage, and (e) the rms value of the fundamental
component of output harmonic voltage.
