DIRECTIONS: Learn more about visible light, ultraviolet, x-rays, and gamma rays and their
applications by answering the given activities.
Introduction:
The visible light is the range of electromagnetic waves that humans can see. Visible
light comes in all colors of the rainbow. Each color has its own special frequency and
wavelength. Visible light is used in vision, photography and illumination, optical fiber, and
lasers.
Ultraviolet (UV) light has shorter wavelengths than visible light but of higher
frequencies and carry higher energy. These waves are used in security marking, fluorescent
lamps, disinfecting water, and in detecting forged bank notes.
X-rays are of shorter wavelengths but carries higher energy than UV rays. These
waves are used in observing internal structure of objects, airport security scanners, medical
x-rays, and engineering applications
Gamma rays are shortest in wavelength, highest in frequency and carry the highest
amount of energy. Thus, they are more dangerous. They can only be blocked with lead and
concrete. These waves are used in sterilizing medical equipment, detection of cancer and its
treatment
