1. Story Genre: (Tall Tales)
A tall tale is a fictional story that stretches the truth.The heroes of tall tales are" larger
than life.”
Sometimes the heroes in a tall tale are completely made up.
Sometimes they are based on an actual person who really lived.
Through the telling of the story, these characters are given exaggerated
characteristics.
They are bigger or stronger than real people and solve problems in a
way thatis hard to believe.
The tall tale heroes were like regular people. They did the same type of work asthe
settlers, except they did it with amazing speed, strength, or cleverness.
1. PLOT SUMMARY:
On a summer night during a fierce thunder storm, a lively baby is born.
Ratherthan cry out while taking her first breath of life, she sits up and takes
hold of the lightning and thunder. Then, she tells her parents she is partial to
the name Rose, so they call her Thunder Rose. Full of spunk, determination,
andconfidence, Thunder Rose accomplishes everything she sets out to do.
She amazes her parents by drinking her milk while holding up a cow, creating
objects with scrap metal, staking a fence without assistance, and building a sky
scraper—all before the age of ten! At the age of 12, she single-handedly takes
down the leader of a pack of 2700 wild cattle with her quick wit and song,
makingthem a part of her family’s herd on their Old West ranch.
Later that year, as she drives those cattle to market in Abilene, she utilizes
somespare metals rods she always carries to lasso a gang of desperadoes and
deliver them to a local jail. During the long journey, the air is so dry and sour
that she lassos a cloud in an attempt to squeeze some rain out of it.

The cloud fights back and develops into a vicious double tornado which Thunder Rose
successfully placates with a sweet melody. Finally, “a soft, drenching-and-soaking rain”
falls as she journeys on to Abilene. Rose realizesthe power of the music of her heart.
Stories of her amazing abilities spread like wildfire throughout the West.

Why the Raven Is Black


The people of the far north tell this story about Owl and Raven, who were best
friends. One day, Raven made a lovely new dress for Owl. Since Raven had been so
nice, Owl then began to make a white dress for Raven. Owl worked at night by the
light of a lamp that burned heavy oil. Owl tried to measure Raven for the dress, but
Raven kept hopping around.
“Oh, I’m going to be so beautiful!” Raven cried as she hopped.
“Stop that hopping,” Owl warned. “You’ll knock over the lamp.”
But Raven would not stand still. Just as owl had predicted, Raven finally knocked
over the lamp. The black oil spilled all over the white dress. That is why Raven is
black.
