PURPOSE

The purpose of this document is to outline the preferred methods of obtaining Oracle Application Server / Oracle Fusion
Middleware (10g, 11g, and 12c) software media, Patch Set releases, and other patches. In addition, important details are
outlined to help understand the options.

SCOPE

This is intended as an introductory document to help administrators obtain the proper product for their needs and begin
recommended maintenance activities.

DETAILS

When a software product is released, it is generally available on CD/DVD media for the duration of and after its supported life
cycle for licensed customers. Download locations have become more popular, but may be limited to the latest release. Post
release patches are available as a download to customers via My Oracle Support without any expressed time limitations.

Oracle Application Server / Oracle Fusion Middleware (10g, 11g, and 12c) software media can be classified into five categories,
which are described in more detail throughout this document:

Note:
"OneOff Patches" include the Critical Patch Update for security fixes and also component
specific Bundle Patches. These are installed with the OPatch utility, and considered "oneoffs"
to be later included in a future Patch Set. There are also PSUs, which follow the same concept.
More information on these are described below.

Obtaining Oracle Fusion Middleware Full Release

Deciding which Oracle Fusion Middleware version and media type will suit your needs is the first step. Oracle Technology
Network (OTN) has information on the newer Oracle Fusion Middleware product. There are a few locations available to obtain
full releases of an Oracle product:

Obtaining Oracle Fusion Middleware OneOff Patches

Oracle Fusion Middleware OneOff Patches are released after filing a bug, and the issue is fixed. These are usually applied with
an OPatch utility, as described in the oneoff readme file. Oneoff patches can fall into the following categories:

Generally Available OneOff Patches

Customer Specific OneOff Patches

Generally available oneoff patches are delivered to all customers, where the issue will likely occur in all situations meeting the
fix criteria. These are usually merged into future Patch Set Releases. (See below for Critical Patch Updates, the most popular
generally available oneoff patch). Customer specific oneoff patches are created for a specific customer situation. They may
become generally available, or may remain restricted until more information is obtained about any new occurrences of the
problem.

Before applying any oneoff patch, you should ensure you have the latest OPatch Utility installed within your Oracle home, as
this optimizes the patching experience.

Note:
Patch 6880880 is used to deliver the latest OPatch Utility. When downloading, choose your
actual platform in use and the correct OPatch version for your Oracle home. For Oracle
Application Server 10g, select the version as "10.1.0.0.0" for your specific version. Do not use

OPatch 10.2 for Oracle Application Server versions unless a 10.2 OUI (installer) was used to
install Application Server components. For Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g, choose 11.1.0.0.0,
and for Oracle Fusion Middleware 12c, choose the NextGen OPatch 13 supported with your 12c
release.

<Note 283367.1> OPatch for Oracle Application Server 10g (10.1.2, 10.1.3, 10.1.4)

Before using OPatch utility, you should verify what version is installed with "opatch version"
command. Note that the 10.1.0.0.0 and 11.1.0.0.0 download is used to deliver an actual
1.0.0.0.xx or 11.1.x.x.x version level and should be specified in the readme. 12c has separate
13.x versions. After downloading, it should be simply extracted into the Oracle home over the
old version. Then, check the "opatch version" again, and compare with the version listed in the
readme file.

Generally available oneoff patches for Oracle Fusion Middleware are available on My Oracle Support by following the below
procedure:

http://support.oracle.com/ > Patches & Updates Tab

Note:
The above process can reveal many patches, which may or may not be applicable to your
application. Unless you are using the stated functionality and suspect that you are hitting the
same problem, Oracle does not recommend applying all oneoff patches made available.
Oracle recommends applying the latest Patch set available and/or using the Knowledge Tab to
find a solution stating that a specific patch number fits your needs before applying and testing
in your environment. See Patch Set section above for key documents to find recommended
maintenance information.

Obtaining Oracle Fusion Middleware Bundle Patches

Oracle Fusion Middleware Bundle Patches (BP) are released after there have been a number of oneoff fixes made available
and are recommended for all customers to apply. BPs are delivered on a component basis, (e.g. Web Cache, SOA, BPEL, etc)
after a base Patch Set has been applied. For example, after applying the Oracle Application Server 10g 10.1.2.3.0 Patch Set,
there is an Oracle Web Cache BP1 (10.1.2.3.1) available with a number of oneoff fixes bundled in the same patch. These are
usually applied with an OPatch utility, as described in the readme file. These fixes will be included in the next available major
Patch Set release.

Bundle Patches for Oracle Fusion Middleware are available on My Oracle Support and can be found by using the Recommended
Patches navigation as outlined in the following document:

Patch Set Updates (PSU) and Critical Patch Updates (CPU)

Oracle currently delivers the latest Patch Set Updates and Critical Patch Updates on a quarterly basis: January, April, July, and
October of each year. These are released to fix security issues, but may have important functionality fixes using the same code
line. While these are a collection of fixes, they are considered "oneoffs", and will be merged into future Patch Sets. You should
continually install these updates to secure your installation. After ensuring you are on a desired Patch Set level (from above),
use the following link to obtain the latest Security Advisory, and an associated Patch Availability Note, which will contain the
latest CPU to apply to your Oracle Fusion Middleware homes:

Check for latest Security Advisory and a Patch Availability Document for your product
A Security Advisory documents the vulnerabilities for a specific CPU release.
A Patch Availability Document provides the cumulative patches and instructions for each
product version within Lifetime Support as defined by Error Correction Policy Policies (Note

PSUs are delivered at the same time, primarily for security purposes, see Note 854428.1,
"Patch Set Updates for Oracle Products".

Obtaining Media and Patches for 32bit Verses 64bit Platforms

When downloading patches, there is a platform choice. This really means the software media choice. There are two general
rules of thumb:

If you are using a 32bit platform, choose the 32bit choice when selecting any media for your platform.
If you have installed 32bit media on a 64 bit platform, choose the 32bit choice when selecting any media for your
platform.

If you are on a 64bit platform, it is important to realize that some platforms have full installation media and patches built as
32bit applications only and thus made available under 32bit selections when a 32bit product is certified on a 64bit
platform. All 10g releases on Solaris, Linux and Windows x8664 are 32bit media. For 11g, the preferred media is 64
bit on 64 bit platform, but there are specific certifications and steps to install and run 32 bit software on 64 bit platforms, so
then always download 32bit patches in that case.
On platforms where there is a potential 32bit or 64bit download, the following platforms have the same 10g media in either
case:

Solaris Sparc 32bit and Solaris Sparc 64bit

Linux x86 (32bit) and Linux x8664
Solaris x86 (32bit) and Solaris x8664

Microsoft Windows 32bit (x86) and Microsoft Windows 64bit (x8664/EM64T/AMD64)

Windows Itanium64 is the only one referred to as "Windows 64bit":

Note:735034.1 Which Software Should be Used When Installing/ Patching Oracle Application Server on MS
Windows 64bit?

Solaris Sparc 64bit While Oracle Application Server 10g is 32 bit media, there are Database 10.1.0.5
portions of the 10.1.2 and 10.1.4 product delivered as 64bit. If there is a 64bit patch available, make that
selection when downloading 10.1.0.5 patches. With the absence of a Solaris Sparc 64bit selection, choose the
Solaris Sparc 32bit selection. The reason for this is because a patch is uploaded based on developed code,
rather than the final destination platform.
