CHAPTER -1

INTRODUCTION

Health and hygiene are crucial for overall well-being.

Health encompasses physical, mental, and social wellness, and
maintaining it involves a balanced lifestyle, regular check -ups,
and access to health care. Hygiene practices, the spread of
disease and promote cleanliness. good health and hygiene are
essential are essential for a longer, healthier life, and they often
go hand in hand with hygiene reducing the risk of illness and
infection

CHAPTER -2

HEALTH:

Health is state of complete physical, mental and social well -being

and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The enjoyment of the highest
attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human
being without distinction of race, religion, political belief, economic or social
condition

1. Emotional health
2. Social health
3. Spiritual health
4. Physical Health

ECE 12
TECH

1.Physical Health:

Physical health is the conditional of your body, taking into

consideration everything from the absence of disease to fitness level. Physical
health is critical for overall well-being, and can be affected by: life style: diet,
level of physical activity, and behaviour.

2. Emotional Health:

Emotional health is about how we think and feel.

It is about our sense of well-being. Our ability to copy with life events and how
we acknowledge our own emotions as well as those of others. It doesn’t mean
being happy all of the time.

3.Social Health:
Social health is a term that refers to the ways in which
people create healthy and positive interpersonal relationship with one another.
Having goods social health helps people improve their emotional well-being and
feel supported in their daily lives.

4.SPIRITUAL HEALTH:

Spiritual health is anything that relates to the

health and wellness of a person’s spirit while spirit can be defined in many ways
throughout many religions and cultures, the concept stems from something within
an individual that cannot be seen in the body and is not a part of the mind.

Fig: spiritual health

ECE 16
TECH

In humans, the extent of an individual’s continuing physical,

emotional, mental, and social ability to cope with his or her environment.

This definition is just one of many that are possible. What constitutes “good”
health in particular can vary widely. The rather fragile individual who stays
“well” within the ordinary environment of his or her existence may succumb to
a heart attack from heavy shovelling after a snowstorm; or a sea-level dweller
may move to a new home in the mountains, where the atmosphere has a lower
content of oxygen, and suffer from shortness of breath and anemia until his or
her red blood cell count adjusts itself to the altitude. Thus, even by this definition,
the conception of good health must involve some allowance for change in the
environment.

ECE 17
TECH

Human Health:
Bad health can be defined as the presence of disease, good health as its absence—
particularly the absence of continuing disease, because the person afflicted with
a sudden attack of seasickness, for example, may not be thought of as having lost
good health as a result of such a mishap.

Actually, there is a wide variable area between health and disease. Only a few
examples are necessary to illustrate the point: (1) It is physiologically normal for
an individual to have a high blood sugar content 15 to 20 minutes after eating a
meal. If, however, the sugar content remains elevated two hours later, this
condition is abnormal and may be indicative of disease. (2) A “healthy”
individual may have developed an allergy, perhaps during early childhood, to a
single specific substance. If the person never again comes in contact with
the antigen that causes the allergy, all other factors remaining normal, he or she
will remain in that state of health. However, should the individual come in contact
with that allergen again, even 20 or 30 years later, he or she may suffer anything
from a mild allergic reaction—a simple rash—to severe anaphylactic
shock, coma, or even death, depending upon the circumstances. Thus it can be
seen that, unlike disease, which is frequently recognizable, tangible, and rather
easily defined, health is a somewhat nebulous condition and somewhat difficult
to define.

Moreover, physical condition and health are not synonymous terms. A seven-
foot-tall basketball player may be in excellent physical condition (although
outside the range of normality for height) but may or may not be in good health—
depending, for example, on whether the individual has fallen victim to an attack
of influenza.

There are further problems in settling upon a definition of human health. A

person may be physically strong, resistant to infection, and able to cope with
physical hardship and other features of his or her physical environment and still
be considered unhealthy if his or her mental state, as measured by behaviour, is
deemed unsound. Mental health can itself be defined variously. Some say that a
person is mentally healthy if he or she is able to function reasonably well and is
emotionally and behaviorally stable. Others define it as the absence of mental
disorder. In the face of confusion about definitions of health, it is most useful,
perhaps, to define health, good or bad, in terms that can be measured and
interpreted with respect to the ability of the individual at the time of measurement
to function in a normal manner, with respect to the likelihood
of imminent disease. These measurements can be found in tables of “reference
values” printed in textbooks of clinical medicine, diagnosis, and other references
of this type.
ECE 18
TECH

When an individual is given a health examination, the examination is likely

to include a series of tests. Some of these tests are more descriptive than
quantitative and can indicate the presence of disease in a seemingly healthy
person. Such tests include the electrocardiogram to detect some kinds of heart
disease; the electromyogram for primary muscle disorders; liver and gall
bladder function tests; and X-ray techniques for determining disease or
malfunction of internal organs.

Other tests give numerical results (or results that can be assigned numerical
values—such as photometric colour determinations) that can be interpreted by
the examiner. These are physical and chemical tests, including blood, urine,
and cerebrospinal-fluid analyses. The results of the tests are compared with the
reference values, and the physician receives clues as to the health of the patient
and, if the values are abnormal, for the methods of improving the patient’s health.

A major difficulty in the interpretation of test results is that of

biological variability. Almost without exception, reference values for variables
are means or adjusted means of large group measurements. For these values to
have significance, they must be considered as lying somewhere near the centre
point of a 95 percent range—i.e., the so-called ordinary range or, with
reservations, the range from normal to the upper and lower borderline limits.
Thus, the 2.5 percent below the lower limit and the 2.5 percent above the upper
limit of the 95 percent range are considered areas of abnormality or, perhaps,
illness. Some areas have wide 95 percent ranges—blood pressure, for example,
may vary considerably throughout the day (e.g., during exercise, fright, or anger)
and remain within its range of normality. Other values have ranges so narrow that
they are called physiological constants. An individual’s body temperature, for
example, rarely varies (when taken at the same anatomical site) by more than a
degree (from time of rising until bedtime) without being indicative of infection
or other illness.

PERSONAL HYGIENE:

Good personal hygiene is about keeping your body clean. It also

helps to protect you from getting infections such as gastroenteritis, colds and flu
and COVID-19.

Washing your hands with soap removes germs that can make you ill. Having
good personal hygiene will also help prevent you from spreading diseases to other
people.

Personal hygiene includes:

• cleaning your body every day

• washing your hands with soap and water after going to the toilet
• brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day
• covering your mouth and nose with a tissue (or your sleeve) when sneezing
or coughing

Better hygiene leads to better health, confidence and overall growth. Good
hygiene is critical for preventing the spread of infectious diseases and helping
children lead long, healthy lives. It also prevents them from missing school,
resulting in better learning outcomes.

Health and Hygiene:

According to the World Health Organisation, health is
defined as “a state of complete physical, social and mental well- being and not
merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.
Good health is more important than being free from disease. Healthy people are
more efficient, productive and live longer than unfit people. Important factors that
contribute to good health are:
1. Balanced Diet- To maintain a healthy life, one should take a proper well-
balanced diet with plenty of water.
2. Personal Hygiene- A person should live in a clean environment and must
follow good personal hygiene. There should be proper disposal of wastes.
Clean surroundings prevent the spread of diseases.
3. Regular Exercise- Along with good food and hygiene exercise is also very
important in maintaining good health. Regular exercise and good sleep
help a person to remain fit, stress-free, and active.

Hygiene:
The practices that we follow in our day-to-day lives to maintain good
health are known as hygiene. This includes:
• Personal hygiene

• Community hygiene

Personal Hygiene- The following practices should be followed every day to

remain Healthy:
• Washing hands before and after eating

• Regular toilet habits

• Cleaning teeth

• Bathing on a regular basis

• Wearing clean and comfortable clothes

• Drinking clean water

• Keeping house clean and insect free

• Cooking in clean utensils

ECE 25
TECH

Community Hygiene- The environment in which we live plays a very important

role in keeping us healthy. The practices to keep our surroundings clean should
include:
• Proper disposal of household wastes

• Cleaning of roads and streets

• Keeping house clean

• Covering dustbins

• Spraying insecticides at regular intervals to ward off insects

CHAPTER-5
Disease:
Sometimes the human body gets affected due to some environmental,
physiological or psychological factors which disturbs the normal functioning of
the body organs. This malfunctioning of the human body is called disease. A
disease may affect a person not only physically but also emotionally and
mentally.
There are Mainly Two Types of Diseases:
1. Infectious diseases
2. Non-infectious diseases

Common Infectious Diseases:

Infectious diseases are caused by pathogens such as bacteria, fungi,
viruses, protozoa, worms, etc. Based on the causative organisms, these can be
classified as under:
The pathogens enter the human body through direct contact, contaminated food
and water, and through infectious droplets. They multiply in the body and affect
the normal functioning of the body.
1. Viral Diseases
a. Common cold
• Caused by rhinovirus

• Affects nose, bronchioles and respiratory tract

• Mainly lasts for 4-5 days

• Common symptoms include sore throat, nasal congestion, headache and

cough
• Spreads by touching infected objects and through droplets during sneezing
and coughing.
b. Hepatitis (Jaundice)
• Caused by virus HAV (Hepatitis A Virus)

• Affects liver

• Common symptoms are high fever, dark yellow urine, loss of appetite,
headache, light coloured stool
• Spreads through contaminated water

• It can be prevented by taking vaccines, drinking boiled and chlorinated

water and maintaining proper hygiene.
c. AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome)

ECE 27
TECH

• Caused by HIV (Human Immunodeficiency virus)

• Affects the immune system
• Common symptoms are swollen lymph nodes, weight loss, fever, loss of
memory, night sweating etc
• Methods of transmission include:
• Using infected needles
• Unprotected sexual contact
• Transfusion of contaminated blood
• From infected mother to unborn child
• It can be prevented by avoiding drug abuse, using safe disposable needles,
avoiding multiple sex partners, regular medical checkups etc.
2. Bacterial Diseases:
a. Typhoid
• Caused by bacterium Salmonella typhoid

• Affects the intestines

• Common symptoms are high fever, stomach pain, loss of appetite,

headache
• Spreads through contaminated food and water

• It can be prevented by taking a vaccine.

b. Cholera
• Caused by bacterium Vibrio cholera

• Affects the intestines

• Common symptoms are dehydration, vomiting, loss of appetite, muscle

cramps, weight loss
• Spreads through contaminated food and water

• It can be prevented by taking vaccines, maintaining personal hygiene and

good sanitation.
3. Fungal Diseases:
Ringworm
• Caused by fungi Miconazole and Trichophyton

• Affects skin, nails and scalp

• Common symptoms are itching on skin and scalp, dry scaly lesions on skin,
nails and scalp
• Spreads by direct contact with infected objects

• It can be prevented by keeping good personal hygiene.

4. Protozoan Diseases:

ECE 28
TECH

a. Malaria
• Caused by many species of Plasmodium.

• Affects the liver and spleen

• Common symptoms are high fever accompanied with chills, enlargement

of liver and spleen, loss of appetite, headache
• Spreads through the bite of female Anopheles mosquito that transfers the
sporozoites of Plasmodium from infected person to a normal person.
• It can be controlled by eradicating mosquitoes, using mosquito nets and
repellents.
• Treated by using chloroquine phosphate

b. Amoebiasis (Amoebic Dysentery)

• Caused by Entamoeba histolytica

• Affects the large intestine

• Common symptoms are stomach pain and cramps, stool with mucus and

CHAPTER-6

Immunity:
Immunity is a person’s ability to fight against diseases. There are two types of
immunity:
1. Innate Immunity- This is present right from birth. It is non-specific. It
consists of many barriers:
o Physical Barriers- This includes skin, lining of respiratory tract, gastro-
intestinal lining and lining of urino- genital tracts where the germs are
trapped in mucus.
o Physiological Barriers- This includes acid in the stomach and lysozymes
in saliva.
o Cellular Barriers- This includes special cells like lymphocytes, monocytes,
macrophages and neutrophils.
o Cytokine Barriers- This includes interferons (a group of proteins produced
by viral infected cells) which protect the non-infected cells.
2. Acquired Immunity- This is acquired after birth either by contracting the
disease or by vaccination. It is pathogen specific and can be classified into two
types:
o Active Immunity occurs when antibodies develop in response to antigens
developed during natural infection or by vaccination. It stays for a longer
period and is time taking.
o Passive Immunity occurs when antibodies develop in response to antigens
forcibly injected into our bodies. It stays for a short period and is fast in
response.
3. Vaccines- A vaccine is an antigen (weakened form of germ) which when
injected/ swallowed causes the body to resist the disease. It does not cause the
disease but helps the body to fight the disease when it is actually attacked by the
germs. There are vaccines available against diseases such as polio, diphtheria,
tuberculosis, measles, hepatitis, small-pox, tetanus etc.
4. Allergy- Some antigens present in the environment can cause
hypersensitive reactions in the immune system.
o Such substances are called allergens. Examples include dust mites, pollen
grains, animal fur etc.
o Common symptoms are rashes, sneezing, runny nose, difficulty in
breathing etc.
o Antihistamines are used generally to relieve symptoms of allergy.

According to scientists, health is a condition of total bodily and mental well-

being. A healthy person is one who is mentally and physically fit. Hygiene refers
to behaviors or habits that promote excellent health and a clean environment.
Every day, we eat a variety of meals. Food is required by all living creatures.
Plants and animals both require nourishment in order to flourish. Plants produce
their own food, whereas animals rely on the sustenance of others. We all start the
day with a healthy breakfast and then eat at least two additional large meals —
lunch and dinner.

Source of Food:
Plants and animals provide the majority of the food we consume. We consume
several portions of the plant as food. We consume the leaves of certain plants,
such as spinach, the seeds of some plants, such as corn, the blooms of other plants,
such as broccoli, the stems of some plants, such as potatoes, and the roots of some
plants, such as carrots. Animal goods include eggs, milk, and milk products such
as butter, ghee, and so on. We also consume the meat of animals such as chicken,
fish, and goats. Thus, food may be classified into five categories depending on its
utility to our bodies. These foods offer energy, help to grow our bodies, protect
them from sickness, and keep us healthy and strong.
Food Components: The five categories or components of food are as follows:
• Carbohydrates

• Fats

• Proteins

• Vitamins

• Minerals

Carbohydrates:
• Carbohydrates are sometimes referred to as energy-producing foods.

• We require energy to do daily activities such as jogging, walking, cycling,

and so on.
• Carbohydrate-rich foods include potatoes, bananas, corn, sugar, cereals,
and so forth.

Fats:
• Fats, like carbs, are considered energy-giving foods. Excess carbs are
converted and stored as fat in our bodies.
• Meat, ghee, vegetable oil, milk, butter, cheese, and dried fruits are high in
fat.

ECE 31
TECH

• Although fatty meals are required for the body, an excess of these foods
leads to weight problems such as obesity, which leads to cardiac
difficulties.
Proteins:
• Protein-rich diets are those that aid in the growth and repair of our bodies'
muscles and tissues. This is one of the most vital dietary categories. It helps
to strengthen muscles and heal damaged tissues in our bodies.
• Protein-rich foods include milk, poultry, eggs, fish, soya beans, and so on.

steps to improve your hygiene:

Following are the steps to Improve Your Hygiene
• Take a bath every day. When we play or sweat, dust particles adhere to our
skin. These dust particles attract bacteria that cause sickness. Bathing on a
daily basis keeps harmful bacteria at bay.
• Before and after each meal, wash your hands. When we play, germs from
the earth and mud are transmitted to our hands and can enter our bodies,
causing sickness.
• Take care of our teeth by brushing twice a day and flossing on a regular
basis to eliminate food particles that have been trapped or caught between
our teeth and are difficult to remove.
• Regularly trim your nails.

• Maintain clean, lice-free hair.

• Maintain excellent eye and ear health. Avoid reading in low-light

situations, and cleanse your eyes with cold water on a frequent basis.
• Always keep our surroundings clean. Garbage should be disposed of in
bins, and water should not be collected in drums or buckets since it serves
as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

causing agents. Good health is the foundation of a happy and
productive life. It is important to take care of one’s physical health by
eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep.
Mental health is just as important to take time to relax and practice self-
care. Social health is also important, and it is important to maintain
healthy relationship with family, friends, and colleagues. Hygiene is
also essential for good health. It is important to practice good hygiene
habits such as washing hands regularly, brushing teeth twice a day, and
showering daily. It is also important to keep one’s environment clean
by regularly cleaning and disinfecting surfaces, washing bedding and
clothing, and disposing of garbage properly. Good health and hygiene
