HSEQ.MS.005 METHOD STATEMENT FOR EARTHWORKS (BACKFILL &
Version 00 of 19.04.2024 EXCAVATION)
1. Scope
This Method Statement defines requirements for Earthwork Works but it doesn’t cover the earthwork activities related
to underground piping, conduits and ducts. They will be covered under different Method Statements.
The beginning of the work is associated with the realization of a set of general and common activities to all
types of structural solutions whose execution, being correct, and seen as fundamental to the success of the
work. Such activities are usually called Preliminary Services and involve the following steps:
a) Verification of the availability of provisional installations and implementation of the shipyard;
b) Cleaning and removal of waste;
c) Identification of the affected services;
d) Acknowledgment of the site work and preliminary works.
e) Preliminary excavation.
In order to start work on the foundation sooner, it is recommended that as soon as the work on the site begins,
excavation and construction work are carried out, they should also be carried out during the assembly of the
site, since they are activities that can be carried out in parallel with the site, thus allowing the reinforced
concrete work to begin immediately after the site is assembled.

2.5. Excavations
Prior to commencing any trench and/or foundations excavation work, the Contractor shall execute the
following tasks:
Topographical survey;
All enquiries related to existing infrastructure or planned structure that may affect the Works;
Detailed Design adaptations, as necessary, to take into account third parties affectations,
environmental requirements or any other circumstances not contemplated at the design phase
and/or to ensure the most correct construction and operation of the system;
Setting out of works;
Geotechnical investigation survey and soil laboratory tests over the potential borrow areas
and other areas.
For the excavations, we will consider execution by manual process for the site were the soil is false and there
is no condition to use mechanized equipment, for the areas that provide required conditions in terms of soil,
we will use the method of mechanical excavation.
During excavation, the subcontractor will take adequate precautions to prevent soil disturbances, which might
affect the bearing capacity of the foundations or the safety of personnel and Site Works.
Prior to the commencement of the excavation works the proposal will be submitted for the Employer’s
approval.
For the opening of ditches, we will consider execution by manual process for the site were the soil is false
and there is no condition to use mechanized equipment, for the areas that provide required conditions in
terms of soil, we will use the method of mechanical excavation. For Mechanical excavation we employ, a
backhoe and dump trucks amongst other plants required by the tender document, and that are listed in the
equipment schedule presented in a separate document.
As the excavations progress, the material from the excavation of soils is stored along the ditch on 2 m band
adjacent to it and at a distance not less than 1 m of the ditch in order and avoid labor falling into the ditch.

In the opposite area of the ditch, we will leave a pathway for the passage of machinery and people.
If the underground waterway is close to the surface, we will use electric pumps to remove the water, before
proceeding with the excavation.
To prevent water from entering the excavation areas, in the rainy season, a separate drainage channel will
be provided alongside the excavated ditch with appropriate tubing to prevent the storm water from entering
the excavation.
Once the excavations and pipe placing are completed these excavations will be back-filled. If the excavated
soils are not re-usable, they will be removed from site to the approved dump site and borrowed soil will be
brought to site for backfill. On the other hand, if the excavated material is suitable and complies with the
Specification, it will be re-used.
2.6. Backfilling
After approval of the Contractor, the backfill work will be conducted. As mentioned above we will set aside
usable filling material and if there is insufficient filling from the excavations, we will provide the balance.
And suitable compactable material from the excavation to the level of the original ground surfaces, as
specified technical specifications. We note that the material to be used for Backfill will be approved by the
Engineer before this activity takes place, and the material will be laid at ±2% of the optimum moisture content
to achieve satisfactory compaction results
The compaction of the back filling will be done by ramming to compact in layers, the thickness of each layer
will be controlled within 250mm. Compactors and rollers would be prepared to compact the soil, and the
compactness of the soil will meet the requirement of specification.
In situ density tests of compacted backfill material will be carried out regularly.
2.7. Backfill
Before the execution of this activity, we will ensure that measures for safety of the working area are addressed.
These measures include but are not limited to installation of warning and location tapes as well as detour
signs when the excavation has been done in a heavy pedestrian or vehicle traffic area.
This backfill will be carried out at the bottom of the ditch and up to half the height.

The placement of this material within the ditch will be made by workers, meaning manually operation.
However, where the trench bottom is in rock or where the contractor will decide that the trench bottom is
unsuitable for the laying.
