Review Motivation:
[Instructional Materials:] Chart paper, markers, and a short story about a day in the
life of a human body highlighting different organ systems.
Engaging Activity 1 - Students will listen to a story about how different organ systems
work together when a person participates in a sports activity.
Engaging Activity 2 - Students will use a K-W-L chart to brainstorm what they know
(K) and want to know (W) about organ systems before discussing the story.
Instructions -
1) Create a diorama representing one organ system, highlighting its organs and their
functions.
2) Label each part and explain how they work together for a specific function (e.g.,
digestion, circulation).
Rubric
Assessment Questions:
1) What are the main functions of the organ system you chose?
3) Can you name a disease that affects your chosen organ system?
Materials - Chart paper, markers, and access to research materials (books, internet).
Significance - Students will connect organ systems to daily activities and understand
their importance.
Instructions -
1) In groups, choose an organ system and discuss its functions in daily life.
2) Create a poster that illustrates these functions and how they impact daily
activities.
3) Present the poster to the class, explaining the significance of the organ system in
real-life scenarios.
Rubric
Assessment Questions:
1) How does your chosen organ system contribute to your daily activities?
2) What happens to your body when this organ system is not functioning properly?
3) How can you maintain the health of your chosen organ system?
Materials - None
Instructions -
2) One student from a team will act out a function of an organ system without
speaking, while their team guesses.
3) After guessing, the student explains the organ system and its function.
Rubric
Assessment Questions:
1) What organ system was represented, and what was its function?
2) How did the acting help you understand the organ system better?
3) Can you think of a real-life example where this organ system plays a crucial role?
ANALYSIS:
Activity 1 - The diorama project allows students to visualize and understand the
structure-function relationship, as they must identify how each organ's structure
supports its function. This hands-on approach reinforces learning by making abstract
concepts tangible.
Activity 2 - The group poster activity encourages collaboration and critical thinking,
allowing students to connect their knowledge of organ systems with real-life
applications, thereby demonstrating their importance in daily activities.
Activity 3 - The charades activity promotes active learning and peer interaction,
helping students internalize the functions of organ systems through a fun and
engaging method, making it easier to remember the information.
ABSTRACTION:
Supporting Material 2 - "How the Body Works" offers detailed insights into each
organ system's structure and function, helping students understand complex
physiological processes.
APPLICATION:
Task 1 - Conduct a simple health survey among family members about their
knowledge and practices regarding organ system health. Analyze the responses in
class.
ASSESSMENT:
Question 1 - What is the relationship between the structure and function of the
heart?
Question 3 - Describe a disease that impacts the digestive system and its effects on
daily life.
H.O.T.S.:
Question 1 - How would the human body function differently if the lungs were not
present?
Question 2 - In what ways does the health of one organ system affect the overall
health of another?
Answer 2 - The health of the circulatory system affects the respiratory system, as
efficient blood flow is necessary for oxygen delivery and carbon dioxide removal.
Assignment:
[Guiding Overview:] Students will research a specific organ system, its structure,
function, and common diseases associated with it.
