Subject: EARTH LIFE SCIENCE

Grade Level: Grade 11

Objective: Identify the structure-function relationship in the various organ

systems, Demonstrate the various functions of the organ systems in the day-
to-day activity of an individual, Use their physiological processes knowledge to
understand the diseases associated with the organ systems.

Learning within the curriculum:

1) The Circulatory System and its Role in Homeostasis

2) The Respiratory System and Gas Exchange

Learning across the curriculum:

1) Physical Education: Understanding how the muscular system functions during

physical activities and its relationship to overall health.

2) Health Education: Exploring nutrition's impact on organ systems, particularly how

different foods affect the digestive and circulatory systems.

Review Motivation:

[Teaching Strategy:] Interactive Read-Aloud Activities

[Instructional Materials:] Chart paper, markers, and a short story about a day in the
life of a human body highlighting different organ systems.

Engaging Activity 1 - Students will listen to a story about how different organ systems
work together when a person participates in a sports activity.

Engaging Activity 2 - Students will use a K-W-L chart to brainstorm what they know
(K) and want to know (W) about organ systems before discussing the story.

Engaging Activity 3 - In pairs, students will role-play as different organ systems

discussing their functions and how they work together to keep the body healthy.
Activity 1: Organ System Diorama

[Teaching Strategy:] Project-Based Learning

Materials - Shoeboxes, colored paper, scissors, glue, and markers.

Significance - Students will visualize and understand the structure-function

relationship of organ systems.

Instructions -

1) Create a diorama representing one organ system, highlighting its organs and their
functions.

2) Label each part and explain how they work together for a specific function (e.g.,
digestion, circulation).

3) Present the diorama to the class, explaining the structure-function relationship.

Rubric

- Clarity of presentation - 5 pts.

- Creativity of diorama - 5 pts.

- Understanding of structure-function relationship - 5 pts.

Assessment Questions:

1) What are the main functions of the organ system you chose?

2) How does the structure of one organ support its function?

3) Can you name a disease that affects your chosen organ system?

Activity 2: Organ Systems in Daily Life

[Teaching Strategy:] Cooperative Learning

Materials - Chart paper, markers, and access to research materials (books, internet).

Significance - Students will connect organ systems to daily activities and understand
their importance.

Instructions -

1) In groups, choose an organ system and discuss its functions in daily life.

2) Create a poster that illustrates these functions and how they impact daily
activities.

3) Present the poster to the class, explaining the significance of the organ system in
real-life scenarios.

Rubric

- Group collaboration - 5 pts.

- Quality of poster - 5 pts.

- Depth of explanation - 5 pts.

Assessment Questions:

1) How does your chosen organ system contribute to your daily activities?

2) What happens to your body when this organ system is not functioning properly?

3) How can you maintain the health of your chosen organ system?

Inclusive Activity 3: Organ System Charades

[Teaching Strategy:] Interactive Learning

Materials - None

Significance - Students will engage in a fun activity that reinforces their

understanding of organ systems.

Instructions -

1) Divide the class into two teams.

2) One student from a team will act out a function of an organ system without
speaking, while their team guesses.

3) After guessing, the student explains the organ system and its function.

Rubric

- Engagement in activity - 5 pts.

- Accuracy of explanation - 5 pts.

- Team collaboration - 5 pts.

Assessment Questions:

1) What organ system was represented, and what was its function?

2) How did the acting help you understand the organ system better?

3) Can you think of a real-life example where this organ system plays a crucial role?

ANALYSIS:

Activity 1 - The diorama project allows students to visualize and understand the
structure-function relationship, as they must identify how each organ's structure
supports its function. This hands-on approach reinforces learning by making abstract
concepts tangible.

Activity 2 - The group poster activity encourages collaboration and critical thinking,
allowing students to connect their knowledge of organ systems with real-life
applications, thereby demonstrating their importance in daily activities.

Activity 3 - The charades activity promotes active learning and peer interaction,
helping students internalize the functions of organ systems through a fun and
engaging method, making it easier to remember the information.
ABSTRACTION:

Understanding the structure-function relationship in organ systems is crucial as it

highlights how specific structures are designed to perform particular functions,
directly impacting an individual's health and daily activities. Recognizing these
relationships can enhance students' awareness of how lifestyle choices affect organ
health.

Supporting Material 1 - "The Human Body: A Very Short Introduction" provides an

overview of how organ systems work together, emphasizing their interdependence
and function.

Supporting Material 2 - "How the Body Works" offers detailed insights into each
organ system's structure and function, helping students understand complex
physiological processes.

APPLICATION:

[Teaching Strategy:] Experiential Learning

Task 1 - Conduct a simple health survey among family members about their
knowledge and practices regarding organ system health. Analyze the responses in
class.

Task 2 - Create a health campaign poster focusing on one organ system,

highlighting its importance and ways to maintain its health, which will be displayed in
the school.

ASSESSMENT:

[Teaching Strategy:] Think-Pair-Share

[Instructional Materials:] Whiteboard and markers

Question 1 - What is the relationship between the structure and function of the
heart?

Question 2 - How does regular exercise affect the respiratory system?

Question 3 - Describe a disease that impacts the digestive system and its effects on
daily life.
H.O.T.S.:

Question 1 - How would the human body function differently if the lungs were not
present?

Answer 1 - Without lungs, gas exchange would be impossible, leading to a lack of

oxygen in the bloodstream and eventual organ failure.

Question 2 - In what ways does the health of one organ system affect the overall
health of another?

Answer 2 - The health of the circulatory system affects the respiratory system, as
efficient blood flow is necessary for oxygen delivery and carbon dioxide removal.

Question 3 - Why is it important to understand the physiological processes of organ

systems when discussing diseases?

Answer 3 - Understanding these processes helps identify symptoms and develop

effective prevention and treatment strategies for diseases.

Assignment:

Assignment 1: Research Project

[Guiding Overview:] Students will research a specific organ system, its structure,
function, and common diseases associated with it.

[Assessment Question:] Write a report detailing your findings, focusing on the

structure-function relationship and how lifestyle choices can impact this organ
system's health.

Assignment 2: Creative Presentation

[Guiding Overview:] Students will create a multimedia presentation (video,

slideshow, etc.) about an organ system of their choice.

[Assessment Question:] Explain the structure-function relationship and discuss

how knowledge of this organ system can inform health decisions in everyday life.
