Spending Christmas day with my family is one of my favorite events of the

year. It can be a busy day planning for our family and friends to come
over, but it is all worth it in the end. My large Italian family arrives and our
house is immediately filled with positive energy, excitement, and love.
The warmth of hugs from family members as they enter is always a good
reminder of the importance of family. We start cooking right away. My
kitchen immediately fills with the smell of sauce cooking on the stove as
we prepare the pasta. The guys go outside to grill. Now you may be
thinking, do they grill at Christmas? And the answer is yes. No matter
what the weather, grilling is part of our tradition. We build a fire in the fire
pit and I love to listen to the sound of the crackle and pop of the wood. It
reminds me of summer as my clothes smell like campfire. The men start
to grill our steak and lamb. Fluffy white snowflakes fall outside and there
is a chill in the air, but that doesn’t stop us. My family will argue, in a fun
and teasing way, about who should be manning the grill. We eat our
large feast and the laughter of the room gives me great happiness. After
dinner we get out all of the desserts. The Aunts all make a million cookie
trays decorated in Christmas sprinkles and frosting. We eat all of our
delicious desserts and make espresso. The aroma of the expresso fills
the air and it feels like I’m in a coffee shop. We begin our game and the
mood gets serious as we all want to win money. The game table erupts
with oohs and ahhs and people are removed from the game. Finally, loud
cheers tell me that we have a winner and that person gleams with pride
and excitement as they get to go home with the big winnings. As my
family leaves my house I am exhausted from a fun, family day, but my
heart is filled with love that I have such a special family.
