COURSE OBJECTIVES/COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

▪ Define direct current voltage, current, power and energy and explain how they are
computed and measured. [ECSA ELO 2]

▪ State and apply direct current circuit laws and theorems. [ECSA ELO 2]

▪ Solve direct current series, parallel and combination circuits [ECSA ELO 2]
▪ Explain and apply electrostatics principles in direct current circuits. [ECSA ELO 2]

▪ Explain and apply magneto statics principles in direct current circuits. [ECSA ELO 2]
▪ Explain and apply electromagnetic induction principles in direct current circuits.
[ECSA ELO 2]

▪ Explain and apply the operational principles of direct current motors. [ECSA ELO 2]
▪ Carry out experimental work, compile and submit report [ECSA ELO 2, 4, 6]
EEB 231 – Course Content
Measurements and Instruments: Current, Voltage, Phase,
Resistance, Energy and Power, Multimeter, Oscilloscope.

DC Circuit laws/Rules and theorems: Ohm’s law, Kirchhoff's laws,


Current and voltage divider Rules, Maxwell loop Current Method,
Nodal Analysis with Voltage Sources, Nodal Analysis with Current
Sources, Mesh Analysis Using Matrix Form, Superposition,
Thevenin's, Norton's theorems, Star-Delta, Delta-Star
transformations, Maximum Power Transfer Theorem, Millman’s
Theorem

Electrostatics: electric field characteristics, permittivity,


Capacitance; Types of Capacitors; Parallel Plate, Composite Series &
Parallel Connections, DC transients, and Time constants.

CREDIT WILL BE AWARDED IF A STUDENT ACHIEVES A MINIMUM MARK OF 50% OVERALL
AND ALSO MEETS THE ECSA OUTCOMES ASSESSMENT .
FAILURE TO PERFORM SATISFACTORILY IN ANY OF THESE WILL RESULT IN SCALING THE
COURSE MARK TO A MAXIMUM OF 49 PERCENT WHICH RESULTS IN OUTRIGHT FAILURE.

Course Goals:
• To enable students to understand, analyse, and apply direct current circuit principles
to the solution of electrical engineering direct current problems.
