Description/content Mechatronics and robotics are two important key technologies for the impending digital revolution
in the economy, science, society, and public administration. Mechatronics is based on three
engineering sciences: mechanical, electrical, and software engineering. These are the fundamental
components of Industry 4.0 and thus play a decisive role in determining the manufacturing and
production processes of the digital future.

Course Details

Course organisation The Bachelor's programme in Mechatronics and Robotics spans seven semesters and is a full-time
degree programme with a significant emphasis on practical training. It follows a modularised
structure and is accredited according to current standards. The workload is 210 ECTS credit points.
The degree will qualify you for a job as an engineer in European industry.

At the beginning of the third semester, you can select one of two specialisation subjects:
mechanical or electrical engineering. Accordingly, you can choose your elective subjects and the
topics of your industrial internship and Bachelor's thesis. In addition to engineering training,
another focus of education is on German as a foreign and technical language, which includes
application training for employment in the industry.

After graduation, it's possible to pursue further studies in a consecutive Master's programme lasting
three semesters.

Costs of living Schmalkalden is quite an affordable study location. The cost of living requires a minimum of
approx. 800 EUR per month:

Requirements / Registration

Academic admission You will need to prove that your university entrance qualification is equivalent to the German high
requirements school diploma ("Abitur"). In most cases, this will be your high school diploma. On www.anabin.de,
you can find out how your high school degree is evaluated in Germany.

If your high school diploma does not qualify you to begin studying in Germany, you have the option

to participate in a probationary study programme within the first two semesters of your Bachelor's
programme.

Language requirements For application to the English-language Mechatronics and Robotics (BEng) Bachelor's programme,
no proof of German knowledge is required. However, applicants must prove English language skills
through one of the following certificates:

IELTS: min. 6.5 points


TOEFL: min. 86 points (Internet-based)

Additional information: English as a native language will be accepted as proof. Proof of English as
the medium of instruction in other Bachelor's programmes will not be accepted for admission.

Possibility of finding part- There are various medium-sized companies in Schmalkalden regularly looking for part-time
time employment employees. Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences offers a dedicated Career Service that
assists in such matters.

Accommodation Dormitories

The "Studierendenwerk Thüringen" (Students‘ Union) runs all dormitories in Schmalkalden. There
are two dormitory buildings on campus – House I and House II at Blechhammer 9 – that can be
reached within two minutes on foot from the Schmalkalden-Fachhochschule train station. The
third dormitory is on Martin-Luther-Ring, which is an eight-minute walk from campus. While the
dormitories offer single room flats, the majority is constituted of single rooms in two- to four-room
flats. The flats are equipped with a fitted kitchen and shower/toilet. The monthly rent (including
utilities) ranges from approx. 200 EUR to 250 EUR. Prospective students can apply online via the

Private housing

Nevertheless, we encourage degree seeking students to consider private accommodation as the


demand for housing in dormitories is very high and we cannot guarantee a spot for you. Students
who seek places of their own can live alone or with other students in a private flat-sharing
community (WG).

The “Wohnungsgenossenschaft Schmalkalden” and the “Wohnungsbau Schmalkalden” offer flats


ranging in size and rent in different residential areas in Schmalkalden and the surrounding area.
You can choose between furnished and non-furnished flats. Furthermore, if you prefer to live in a
shared flat but do not know somebody to room with, our housing team can assign you a shared flat.
