Introduction:
Short-chain fatty acids, especially butyric acid, or its salts, are used extensively as feed additive as source
of energy for epithelial cells, to promote gut epithelial health, for continuous development and repairing
of gastro-intestinal tracts of livestock and to control intestinal pathogens. In ruminants, once the rumen is
completely developed, it produces lot of butyric acid in the rumen through fermentation process (in
rumen as well as lower tract), which becomes the source of continuous source of butyric acid for the
entire body system. However, pre-ruminant calves produce much less of butyric acid (in caecum due to
fermentation), which is not sufficient to meet their requirements. Butyric acid is also secreted to some
extent through milk fat (being component of milk fat) but not suuficient to meet the requirements. Thus
young calves require external supply of butyric acid or its preparations through diet. Three types of
preparations of butyric acid are available in the market: uncoated, coated or ester of glycerol (glycerol
acetate). Uncoated products are powders or liquids, used in feed or in drinking water. In coated or
encapsulated butyric acid products, carriers are used for the purpose of coating or encapsulation to carry
the acids down to the intestinal tract, wherein gut epithelial cells are exposed directly to the acids. The
composition of the intestinal microbiota is modified potentially due to the action of free butyric acid.
Moreover, the entero-pathogens come in closer contact with the acid. Generally, sodium butyrate is
chosen for coating, as butyric acid is known to decrease virulence gene expression and invasion of
Salmonella in epithelial cells also. Moreover, research reports suggest that coated butyric acid
significantly decreased colonization of pathogens.
Mechanisms of action of BUTIGOLD:
• Acts as acidifier (reduces pH of digesta).
• Butyric acid along with other short chain fatty acids stimulates growth of rumen epithelium.
• Increases rumen cells mitosis (cell division).
• Reduces normal cell death (apoptosis).
• Promotes large rumen papillae growth, villi height, crypt death and thus increases the surface area for nutrient
absorption.
• Modulates cytokines gene expression in intestine.
• Augments antioxidant defense & improves integrity of gut by modulating antioxidant enzymes and TJ
proteins gene expression.
• Protects against pathogenic bacterial infections by strengthening intestinal mucosal barrier.
