PHYSICAL EXAMINATION

1 Colour White Cu2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+,

Fe3+ absent

2 Smell Characteristic odour NH4+, CH3COO- may be

present

DRY HEATING TEST

Heated the salt in a dry test tube.

1 Gas evolved No gas evolved NO3- absent

2 Sublimation No sublimate formed Ammonium halides,

aluminium chloride may
be absent

3 Decrepitation No Crackling sound Lead nitrate, barium

observed nitrate absent

4 Colour of the residue White Ba2+, Sr2+ , Ca2+ , Al3+ ,

Mg2+may be present

WET TEST

1 Rubbed a little amount of the characteristic odour Acetate (CH3COO-),

salt between moist fingers observed Ammonium (NH4 +) may
be present.

TEST FOR ACIDIC RADICAL

DIL. H2SO4 TEST

1. TEST FOR CARBONATE Brisk effervescence not Carbonate (CO32-) absent

Treated a pinch of the salt with observed
dil. H2SO4
CONC. H2SO4 TEST

2 TEST FOR CHLORIDE No pungent smelling gas Chloride (Cl-) absent

Treated a pinch of the salt with evolved.
conc. H2SO4

3 TEST FOR BROMIDE No red brown gas evolved. Bromide (Br-) absent
Treated a pinch of the salt with
conc. H2SO4

4 TEST FOR NITRATE

Treated a pinch of the salt with No Reddish-brown fumes are Nitrate (NO3 -) absent
conc. H2SO4, added paper ball evolved
after heating the content of the
test tube

5 TEST FOR ACETATE

FERRIC CHLORIDE TEST

To the aqueous solution of salt A red coloured solution Acetate (CH3COO-)

added FeCl3 solution. obtained. indicated.

Divided the above solution in

two parts:

Added water to Part I and Red- brown ppt obtained Acetate confirmed
boiled the solution

Added HCl to Part II Colour of the solution Acetate confirmed

changed to yellow

ESTER TEST
In a test tube, added conc. A pleasant fruity smell is Acetate confirmed
sulphuric acid to a pinch of the obtained
salt. Heated the solution.
Added few drops of ethyl
alcohol to and poured the
content of test tube into a
beaker containing water.

TEST FOR INDEPENDENT RADICALS

6 TEST FOR SULPHATE
To the aqueous solution of the No white ppt insoluble in Sulphate (SO42-) absent
salt added barium chloride HCl obtained
solution

7 TEST FOR PHOSPHATE

Added conc. HNO3 to the salt Canary yellow ppt. not Phosphate (PO43-) absent
and boiled it. Added obtained.
ammonium molybdate in
excess.

TEST FOR BASIC RADICAL

S.N. EXPERIMENT OBSERVATION INFERENCE

TEST FOR GROUP ZERO

1 Heated salt with NaOH. Brought a rod No characteristic NH4+ absent

dipped in HCl near the mouth of the test ammoniacal smell. No
tube. dense fumes of NH4Cl
obtained.

TEST FOR GROUP I

To the original solution added dil. HCl No white ppt Pb2+ absent
2

TEST FOR GROUP II

3 To the above solution added, Na2S No black or yellow Pb2+, Cu2+, As3+ absent
pallets ppt.

TEST FOR GROUP III

4 To the O.S. added 3-4 drops of conc. No white floating ppt. Al3+, Fe3+ absent
HNO3, boiled. Added 2g of NH4Cl and or reddish brown ppt
boiled again. Cooled the tube under tap
water and then added excess of NH4OH.

Since there was no ppt in group III, divided the above solution in three parts.

TEST FOR GROUP IV

5 To part I, added Na2S pallets A dull white ppt Zn2+ indicated

obtained
CONFIRMATORY TEST FOR
ZINC
Dissolved the dull white ppt in HCl and
boiled off H2S. Divided the solution in
two parts

NaOH TEST
Added NaOH to Part I A white ppt formed Zn2+ confirmed
which got dissolved in
excess of NaOH

POTASSIUM FERROCYANIDE
TEST
Added Potassium ferrocyanide to Part II A white-bluish ppt Zn2+ confirmed
obtained

RESULT
ACIDIC RADICAL: CH3COO -
BASIC RADICAL: Zn2+
SALT: (CH3COO)2Zn

CHEMICAL EQUATIONS FOR ACETATE (TO BE WRITTEN ON LHS)

INDICATORY TEST:

CH3COO- + H2SO4 → HSO4- + CH3COOH

FERRIC CHLORIDE TEST

3CH3COO- + FeCl3 → (CH3COO)3Fe + 3NaCl

(CH3COO)3Fe + 2H2O → (CH3COO) (OH)2 Fe ↓(brown ppt) + 2CH3COOH

ESTER TEST

2CH3COO- + H2SO4 → SO4 2- + 2CH3COOH

CH3COOH + C2H5OH → CH3COOC2 H5 [ethyl acetate (fruity smell)] + H2O
