Control visibility/graphics overrides

Learn about view display properties using


visibility/graphics overrides.

The completed exercise

1. Open the exercise file View-display.rvt.


This file opens in the Floor 2 floor plan
view.

2. In the View tab, Create panel, select
Duplicate View. This will create view
Level 2 Copy 1. In the Project Browser,
right-click on this name and choose
Rename. Type in the name Floor 2
Dimensions.

3. In the new view, select a desk


component and note its category is
shown at the top of the Properties
palette as Furniture. Repeat for sink,
kitchen cabinet, and refrigerator
components. Note their categories are
Plumbing Fixtures, Casework, and
Specialty Equipment.

4. In the Properties palette, click the Edit
button next to Visibility/ Graphics
Overrides (this can also be accessed
via the View tab). Note the tabs that
are available to control different
category types.

5. In the Visibility column, deselect the


Casework category to hide it in the
view.

6. In the Category name search, type the
letters fu and then deselect the
visibility of the Furniture category.
Change the category name search to
plu and then deselect the visibility of
the Plumbing Fixtures category. Click
OK to close the Visibility/ Graphics
Overrides dialog.

7. In the view note the furniture,


casework, and plumbing fixtures are
hidden. The refrigerators are still
visible. Select one of the refrigerators,
right-click, and choose Hide in View >
Category to hide the Specialty
Equipment category.

8. Select the section line in the view,


right-click, and choose Repeat [Hide
Category] to hide the Section category.

9. In the View tab, Graphics panel, click
Visibility/ Graphics. In the Annotation
Categories tab, select the Halftone
option for the Grids category. Click OK
to close the Visibility/ Graphics
Overrides dialog and note the gridlines
are now shown in halftone.

10. In the Annotate tab, Dimension panel,


click Aligned In the Options Bar, select
Wall Faces and set the Pick option to
Entire Walls. Click Options and review
the settings for Include Opening >
Widths and click OK to close the

11. Select the wall on the upper side of the
corridor and place the dimension string
above the wall. Then select the walls
along the offices below and place the
dimension string beneath. Then select
the lower corridor wall and place the
dimension string below this.

12. In the Project Browser, right-click the


Floor 2 Dimensions view and choose
Duplicate View > Duplicate. Rename
the new view Floor 2 Furniture.

13. In the Properties palette, click the Edit


button next to Visibility/ Graphics
Overrides. In the Visibility column,
select the Casework category to display
it in the view. Click OK to close the
Visibility/ Graphics Overrides.

14. In the View Control bar, click the
Reveal Hidden Elements button. Note
the objects hidden in the view are now
displayed in a purple color.

15. Select one of the furniture elements. In


the Modify|Furniture tab, click Unhide
Category. Note all furniture elements
are no longer shown in purple as they
are no longer hidden in the view.
Repeat this for the Plumbing Fixtures
and Specialty Equipment. In the
Modify|Furniture tab, click Toggle
Reveal Hidden Elements Mode.

16. In the Properties palette, click the Edit
button next to Visibility/ Graphics
Overrides. Then, click the Override
button in the Cut Patterns column for
the Walls category.

17. In the Fill Pattern Graphics set the


Foreground Pattern to Solid Fill and
the Color to Blue. Click OK to save the
override and then click OK to close the
Visibility/ Graphics Overrides. Note all
the walls in the view now display the
blue solid fill override.

18. In the view pick one of the furniture
components. Right-click and choose
Override Graphics in View> By
Category.

19. In the View Specific Category Graphics,


set the Surface Pattern Foreground
patten to Solid Fill and the Color to
gray RGB 192-192-192. Click OK to close
the View Specific Category Graphics.
Note the furniture elements now
display the gray solid fill override.

20. Zoom in closer to view the doors in the
view. Click the Edit button next to
Visibility/ Graphics Overrides in the
Properties palette. Expand the Doors
category and then click the Override
button in the Projection/Surface Lines
column for the Plan Swing
subcategory.

21. In the Line Graphics dialog, change the


Pattern to Hidden 1/16ʺ and the Color
to RGB 192-192-192. Then click OK to
save the override and OK to close the
Visibility/ Graphics Overrides.

22. Note all the doors in the view now
display the Hidden line override.
