Q.2 Answer the following.

a) Explain Design Procedure for Knuckle joint with neat sketch. 06
b) Define Factor of safety. Explain factor affecting on selection of Factor Of 05
safety and its phystcal significance.
C) Explain any two theories of failure. 03
Q.3 Answer the following. 08
a) Explain the following terms;
i) Endurance limit
ii) Notch Sensitivity
iii) Cyclic Stress
iv) Stress concentrationfactor
b) Explain the modifytngfactors for endurance strength. 06

Answer the following.

a) It is required to select a flat-belt drive for a fan running at 350 rpm which is 08
driven by a 10 kW, 1400 rpm motor. The belt drive is open-type and space
is available for a center distance of 2 m approximately. Assume belt
velocity as 18 m/s. The power transmittingcapacity of the belt per mm
width per ply at 1800 arc of contact and at a belt velocity of 5.08 m/s is
0.0118 kW. The load correction factor can be taken as 1.2. Suggest
preferred diameters (consider the nearest preferred value) for motor and
fan pulleys and speclfy the standard width of 4 ply belt.
(Refer the standard table given at the end of question paper)
b) Differentiate between Flat Belt Drive and V-Belt Drive 06

Q.6 Answer the following.
a) Explain series and parallel springs for finding the Stiffness of Spring. 06
b) It is required to design helical compression spring subjected to a 08
maximum force of 1250N. The deflection of the spnng corresponding to
the maximum force should be approximately30 mm. The spring index
can be taken as 6. The spring is made of patented and cold-drawn steel
wire. The ultimatetensile strength and modulus of rigidity of the spring
material are 1090 and 81370 N/mm2respectively. The permissible shear
stress for the spring wire should be taken as 50% of the ultimatetensile
strength. Consider the spring has square and ground end. Design the
spring and calculate:
i) wire diameter;
ii) mean coil diameter:
iii) number of active coils;
iv) total number of coils;
v) free length of the spring (assuming Imm clearance between the
adjacent coils);
vi) Pitch of the coil.

b) An electric motorweighing 12 kN is lifted by means of an eye bolt as 04
shown in Fig. The eye bolt is screwed into the frame of the motor.The
eye bolt has coarse threads. It is made of plain carbon steel 30C8 (Syt =
380 N/rnm2)and tie factor of safety is 6. Determine the size of the bolt.
