Q.5 Answer the following.
a) A rotating shaft IS made of steel FeE 580 (Syt = 580 N/mm2). It is 07
subjected to a steady torsional moment of 275 N-m and bending moment
Of 1250 N-m. Calculate the diameter of the shaft using maximum shear
stress theory. (use factor of safety = 3).
b) Explain design procedure for muff coupling with neat sketch. 04
c) Explain failure modes for rivet joint. 03

Q.6 Answer the following.
a) Explain series and parallel springs for finding the Stiffness of Spring. 06
b) It is required to design helical compression spring subjected to a 08
maximum force of 1250N. The deflection of the spnng corresponding to
the maximum force should be approximately30 mm. The spring index
can be taken as 6. The spring is made of patented and cold-drawn steel
wire. The ultimatetensile strength and modulus of rigidity of the spring
material are 1090 and 81370 N/mm2respectively. The permissible shear
stress for the spring wire should be taken as 50% of the ultimatetensile
strength. Consider the spring has square and ground end. Design the
spring and calculate:
i) wire diameter;
ii) mean coil diameter:
iii) number of active coils;
iv) total number of coils;
v) free length of the spring (assuming Imm clearance between the
adjacent coils);
vi) Pitch of the coil.

c) A plate, 80 mm wide and 10 mm thick, is joined with another steel plate 06
by means of single transverse and double parallel fillet welds, as shown
in Fig. The joint is subjected to a maximum tensile force of 55 kN. The
permissible tensile and shear stresses in the weld material are 75 and 50
N/rnm2respectively. Determine the required length of each parallel fillet
weld. Consider 15 mm of length for starting and stopping of the weld run.
