OMBEGA, MARYGRACE C.,”Holistic Approach in Teaching Mathematics to Improve Pupils’ Numeracy

Skills”

ABSTRACT

The main objective of this study was to use holistic approach in teaching mathematics to

improve pupils’ numeracy skills. It further aimed to find out the effect of this intervention in the levels of

numeracy skills of pupils. This was conducted among the 16 out of 27 Grade 5 pupils of Maninang

Elementary School for School Year 2020-2021. The data was tabulated using mean and mean percentage

score to determine the level of Numeracy Comprehension skills of pupils before and after the

intervention. The results of the study revealed that the pupils have very low numeracy comprehension

skills in the pre-test. An intervention was given to the pupils using the holistic approach, home visitation

and intensifying parents’ support. After giving the intervention, the post-test result showed that the

level of numeracy skills of pupils have increased to high level. The result also revealed that the

intervention used was effective in improving the numeracy skills of pupils.

POLICY NOTE

The issuance of DepEd Order no. 12, series 2015 “Guidelines on

the Early Language Literacy and Numeracy Program has emphasized

the President’s Ten Point Basic Education Agenda which states that

every child should be a reader by Grade. The program is strengthening

its reading program through the implementation of the early

Language, Literacy, and Numeracy Program. This program will also

develop in Filipino children literacy and numeracy skills and attitudes

which will contribute to lifelong learning. More specifically, it aims to

improve reading and numeracy skills of Kinder to Grade 3 pupils,

following K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum, and to establish a

sustainable and cost-effective professional development system for

teachers.

The aim of the department to enhance the numeracy skills

through intensifying the K to 12 Mathematics curriculum is

continuously being addressed by schools in the Philippines. Teacher

training on curriculum implementation and provision of learning

resources for Mathematics were made available to enhance the

performance of learners in the learning area. However, low

performance is mathematics is still observed. Many factors have been

attributed to the low performance of learners. One of which is the

learners’ willingness and interest to learn the subject.

In this study, the researcher was able to implement an

intervention that aimed to enhance the numeracy skills of pupils

through holistic approach. Holistic approach motivates children to learn

about a subject. It instils curiosity and allows children to learn naturally

and creatively. It is also attuned to each child’s individual persona and

learning style, in contrast of the current mass educational system

(Scholar Base, 2014). In this light, holistic approach was an effective

way to increase learners’ performance specifically their numeracy skills

as it play vital role in preparing the learners to be lifelong learners and

globally competitive. The Schools Division of Capiz may issue a

memorandum on the adoption of this approach in improving the

performance of learners not only in Mathematics but also in all other

learning areas. The SDO can also use the result of this study as basis

for crafting a training program or seminar (webinar) for teachers and

parents emphasizing the importance of investing in the learners’

multiple aspects rather than on their mental aspect alone. It can be

included as one priority concern in making learning materials such as

learning activity sheets and self-learning modules. The learning

materials should address holistically the learning needs of learners. So,

proper training is needed for LAS and SLM writers should be done to

consider holistic approach in making these kinds of learning resources.

Since, the study revealed also the great contribution of parents,

teachers and the pupils themselves in the learning process, the parents

are encouraged to be hands-on in the learning of their children

especially in this time of pandemic. There can be a regular orientation

and consultation between teacher and parents in order to monitor and

update the learning progress of learners especially in this time of

pandemic.

Recommendation

The result of the study have shown that holistic approach as an intervention to improve

pupils’ numerical skills was effective. This can be used a baseline data for the department, the

school, the teachers, parents and the community to craft new policies and device intervention that

would result to an increase in learners’ performance. Through the result of this study, the

researcher would like to recommend the following:

1. Teachers must undergo online sessions and teacher training so as to reorient them of

their vital roles not only as academic molders but also as developers of holistic learners. The

teachers play an important role not only in developing the mental abilities of learners but more so

in inculcating the value for education as it is very necessary that children develop first their love

for studies.

2. Teachers must adopt several approaches or strategies that will develop learners

abilities taking into consideration the different aspects of child’s development. Teachers may

invest in the child’s emotional, psychological, physical and mental aspects in order for them to

improve holistically.

3. Parents and guardians as well must work hand in hand with the teachers in order to

effectively facilitate learning especially in this time of pandemic. The role of parents is very vital

especially in instilling values and discipline to their children. There is a need for parents to nurture

their children with love, understanding support and patience so that they may also their children to

develop self-love, confidence and interest to learn.

4. The parents and teachers collaboration and cooperation should be encouraged so that

facilitation of learning will be effective.

5. The Department of Education must craft a policy on intensifying parent and teachers’

involvement in their children’s education. One way is through conducting parents and teachers’

seminar or training on parenting and facilitating effective teaching and learning.

6. Although, math is a difficult subject, learners must still develop their numerical skills if

they are properly guided through home visitations and assistance from parents. The school must

include home visitation to learners as part of their School Improvement Plan, providing fund and

support to teachers as they perform their functions. Constant monitoring is encouraged to all

teachers to check the progress of their learners.

7. The use of social media as a platform in communicating with pupils and their family is

a best way especially that there are health protocols to be observed. However, in case that

internet connection and gadgets limit this, the teacher and parents may also make use of

traditional methods of communicating through letters and the use of mobile phones through SMS

and calls.

8. Since in this study, holistic approach provided positive result in improving learner’s

performance especially in numerical test, the school may opt to adopt this intervention to other

grade levels and even with other learning areas.

Numeracy has been a long time problem in elementary grades as pupils

have difficulty when it comes to numbers. Many pupils failed in mathematics

subject because they find it hard to understand and with that it lead them to lose

their interest and dislike the subject. In this study, the researcher, advocated to

improve the numeracy skills of pupils through investing in the child’s holistic

development focusing not only to their mental aspect but in all aspects of

development-mentally, emotionally, morally, and physically.

The holistic approach used in this study was able to address vital aspects

of child’s learning developing as it invested first to the learners’ interest and love

for studying the subject, followed by encouraging and providing a learning

environment where learners can feel the support of the family, and the

community where they leave. The constant monitoring, assistance and support of

teacher also contributed to the learners’ interest to learn mathematics. With the

availability of learning materials at home especially in this time of pandemic, and

with the parents and family members’ support, learners can better perform as

they have their self-paced learning.
