b) Mr Wilson has two types of wire. The copper wire is 90m and the insulating wire is 126m
long. The wires are cut into pieces of equal length. By using your knowledge about HCF, find
the maximum length of each piece.

a) Four times a certain number increased by ten is equal to 46. Calculate the value of that
number. (2)

b) A mother is twice as old as her daughter. Ten years ago, the mother was three times as old
as her daughter. How old is the mother now? (4)

c) The square EFGH is not drawn to scale. The length (L) of each side is 6cm.

1) Calculate the area of the square (EFGH). (1)

The diagonals EG and FH are equal in length (i.e. EG = FH). The length of EG is √72 cm.

2) Show that the formula, 𝐴 = (𝐸𝐺)(𝐹𝐻), is equivalent to the area of the square. (3)
