General Instructions:
(i) There are 11 questions in all. All Questions are compulsory.
(ii) This question paper has four sections: Section A, Section B, Section C and Section D.
(iii) Section A contains four questions of two marks each, Section B contains two questions
of three marks each, Section C contains two question of five mark each. In Section D contains
one case study (paragraph) having 3 questions objective single correct option two marks each
question.
(iv) You may use log tables if necessary but use of calculator is not allowed.

SECTION-A
1. The potential difference across a cell in an open circuit is 8 V. It falls to 4 V when a current of
4 A is drawn from it. The internal resistance of the cell is:

2. Two identical small conducting balls B1 and B2 are given –7 pC and +4 pC charges
respectively. They are brought in contact with a third identical ball B3 and then separated.
If the final charge on each ball is –2 pC, the initial charge on B3 was

3. Two charged particles P and Q, having the same charge but different masses mP and mQ,
start from rest and travel equal distance in a uniform electric field E in time tP and tQ
t 
respectively. Neglecting the effect of gravity, the ratio  P  is:
 tQ 

4. Two long straight wires 1 and 2 are kept as shown in the figure. The linear charge density of
the two wires are 1 = 10 C/m and 2 = –20 C/m. Find the net force F experienced by an
electron held at point P.

SECTION-B

5. A potential difference V is applied across a conductor of length  and uniform cross-section

area A. How will the (i) electric field E, (ii) drift velocity vd, and (iii) current density j be
affected when (a) V is doubled and (b)  is halved (keeping other factors constant)?

6. The electric field in a region is given by

E = (10x + 4)iˆ
where x is in m and E is in N/C. Calculate the amount of work done in taking a unit charge
from
(i) (5 m, 0) to (10 m, 0)
(ii) (5 m, 0) ot (5 m, 10 m)

SECTION-C
7. (i) A cell emf of (E) and internal resistance (r) is connected across a variable load
resistance (R). Draw plots showing the variation of terminal voltage V with (i) R and (ii)
the current (I) in the load.
(ii) Three cells, each of emf E but internal resistances 2r, 3r and 6r are connected in parallel
across a resistor R.
Obtain expressions for (i) current flowing in the circuit, and (ii) the terminal potential
difference across the equivalent cell.

8. (i) Derive an expression for potential energy of an electric dipole p in an external uniform
electric field E . When is the potential energy of the dipole (1) maximum, and (2)
minimum?
(ii) An electric dipole consists of point charges –1.0 pC and +1.0 pC located at (0, 0) and
 1000 V  ˆ
(3 mm, 4 mm) respectively in x – y plane. An electric field E =   i is switched on

in the region. Find the torque  acting on the dipole.

SECTION-D
Paragraph Based Questions
A capacitor is a system of two conductors separated by an insulator. The two conductors
have equal and opposite charges with a potential difference between them. The capacitance
of a capacitor depends on the geometrical configuration (shape, size and separation) of the
system and also on the nature of the insulator separating the two conductors. They are used
to store charges. Like resistors, capacitors can be arranged in series or parallel or a
combination of both to obtained desired value of capacitance.

9. Find the equivalent capacitance between points A and B in the given diagram.
