UNIT 1 SOW-Mass and Weight
Topic Title: Mass and weight Grade (Year Group): GRADE 9 IGCSE
Lesson Objectives Learning outcomes (Low medium, high ability ranges) Cross-Curricular links (Links with other
subjects or learning beyond the
State that mass is a measure of the quantity of matter in A*-A:
an object at rest relative to the observer classroom)
State that weight is a gravitational force on an object that Trigonometric graphs of Sine and
has mass Cosine
B-C:
Define gravitational field strength as force per unit mass; Define gravitational field strength as force per unit
w w
recall and use the equation g = and know that this is mass; recall and use the equation g = and know Learning Skills / Competencies
m m
equivalent to the acceleration of free fall that this is equivalent to the acceleration of free fall
Derivation of Trigonometric ratios

a balance using a balance
Main lesson activities Assessment (Formative / Summative explanation) Resources (include list and links – name
of PP etc.)
Learners investigate the relationship between mass and Practice examples are given for students to practice
weight. They use an electronic balance to measure the mass and discuss later. Power point
of various objects or they can use slotted masses of 100g Keywords Table printout
each. Learners use a force meter to measure the weight. They
plot a graph of weight against mass and calculate the
gradient. Introduce the value of the gradient as the
gravitational field strength.
Stick pictures of the planets and the Sun in our solar system
on the walls of the classroom, with values of their gravitational
field strength. Learners hunt to find the different planets and
their values of g and use these to calculate their weight on
these planets. Learners may need to first measure their mass
using bathroom scales. Some learners may be sensitive about
their mass so you may offer to share your mass with the class
for use in calculations.
Extended assessment:
Clarify that a gravitational field is a region in which a mass
experiences a force due to gravitational attraction and this
value changes depending on the size of the mass creating the
field and the distance away from this mass.
