CHECKPOINT: What are the government programs and initiatives in addressing social
inequality?
Government Programs and Initiatives to address Local, National and Global Social
Inequalities
Social inequality occurs when resources in a given society are distributed unevenly,
typically through norms of allocation, that engender specific patterns along lines of socially
defined categories of persons. It is the differentiation preference of access of social goods in
the society brought about by power, religion, kinship, prestige, race, ethnicity, gender, age,
sexual orientation, and class. Social inequality usually implies to the lack of equality of
outcome but may alternatively be conceptualized in terms of the lack of equality of access to
opportunity.
There are five systems or types of social inequality: wealth inequality, treatment and
responsibility inequality, political inequality, life inequality, and membership inequality.
Political inequality is the difference brought about by the ability to access governmental
resources which therefore have no civic equality. In treatment and responsibility differences,
some people benefit more and can quickly receive more privileges than others. In working
stations, some are given more responsibilities and hence better compensation and more
benefits than the rest even when equally qualified. Membership inequality is the number of
members in a family, nation, or faith. Life inequality is brought about by the disparity of
opportunities which, if present, improve a person's life quality. Finally, income and wealth
inequality are the disparity due to what an individual can earn on a daily basis contributing
to their total revenue either monthly or yearly.
The major examples of social inequality include income gap, gender inequality, health
care, and social class. In health care, some individuals receive better and more professional
care compared to others. They are also expected to pay more for these services. Social class
differential comes evident during the public gathering where upper-class people given the
best places to seat, the hospitality they receive and the first priorities they receive.
Social inequality refers to disparities in the distribution of economic assets and income
as well as between the overall quality and luxury of each person's existence within a society.

Indeed, people who are born poor will have more difficulty than people who are born
rich. In societies dominated by men, known as patriarchal societies, women tend to have
more limitations compared to men. Persons with different sexual orientations also face more
difficulty in many instances. People who are born with disabilities are already physically
encumbered compared to those born without disabilities. People who are born in urban
areas or are born to the dominant cultural or religious groups have an easier time compared
to those born in rural areas or are born into families who belong to a cultural or religious
minority.
Partners from the Margosatubig Regional Hospital and Zamboanga del Sur Medical
Center in the Province of Zamboanga del sur had each received a single SCB; and similarly,
the Dr. Jose Rizal Memorial Hospital and the Zamboanga del Norte Medical Center in
Zamboanga del Norte also received one (1) unit each.
The same SCBs will also be delivered to the Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Hospital, the
Basilan General Hospital, and the Sulu Sanitarium. The SCBs will be used by healthcare
professionals to collect samples from patients and individuals that will be tested for the 2019
Corona Virus Disease.
Testing through the SCBs will be conducted by seating each patient outside the booth,
while the medical professional collects samples by swabbing the patient’s nose and throat
using arm-length gloves built into the front window of the booth.
The SCB is the product of the Futuristic Aviation and Maritime Enterprise (FAME)
incorporated, developed in collaboration with the DOST-Philippine Council for Industry,
Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD), and the
DOST-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD).
Assembly and distribution of the SCBs are tied to the DOST-IX’s SAVES Program (Devising
Operational Strategies and Tools to Safeguard Against the Virulent Epidemic Situation), that
focuses on developing pragmatic solutions to be used in the COVID-19 efforts.
The 4Ps has dual objectives as the flagship poverty alleviation program of the Aquino
administration:
The 4Ps also helps the Philippine government fulfill its commitment to the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs)—specifically in eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, in
achieving universal primary education, in promoting gender equality, in reducing child
mortality, and in improving maternal health care.
powerful states end up being controlled and influenced by the richer and more powerful
states.
The balance of power of states is more often than not rooted in historical events. where
the process of colonization in the past led to a relation, where the process of colonization in
the past led to a relation of unequal dependency between a former colony and its former
colonizer. The case of the Philippines and the United States is a good example of this.
Culturally, economically, and politically, the Philippines is perceived to be under the strong
influence of the US.
