Chapter 7. Equations, Formulae, and Inequalities

Algebraic Expressions

2𝑎 a is variable and 2 is the coefficient of a.

−5𝑏 b is variable and -5 is the coefficient of b.

𝑐 c is variable and the coefficient of c is +1.

−𝑑 d is variable and the coefficient of d is −1.

2 2
𝑥 x is variable and the coefficient of x is .
3 3

Formula

To be a formula, only one variable must be on one side (mostly the left-hand side) of the equation
and the coefficient of that variable must be +1. That variable is the subject of the formula.

e.g., 𝐹 = 𝑚𝑎 (F is the subject of the formula.)

𝐴 = 2𝜋𝑟ℎ + 2𝜋𝑟 2 (A is the subject of the formula.)

Rearranging Formula

Rearrange the subject of a formula by converting the coefficient of the target variable into +1.

1
Solving Equations

➢ Find the value of the unknown number (variable) by moving unnecessary numbers and
variables to another side of the equation.
➢ Change the sign of the variable or number to its opposite once you move it to another side
of the equation.

The opposite of + is − .

The opposite of × is ÷ .

Inequalities

≠ unequal e.g., 7−4≠8

> greater than 5>2

< less than −3 < −1

Chapter 9 Decimals and Percentages

Multiplying by the power of 10

When a decimal is multiplied by 10, the decimal point moves one place to the right.

e.g., 5.304 × 10 = 53.04

When a decimal is multiplied by 102 , the decimal point moves two places to the right.

5.304 × 102 = 530.4

Dividing by the power of 10

When a decimal is divided by 10, the decimal point moves one place to the left.

e.g., 5.304 ÷ 10 = 0.5304

When a decimal is divided by 102 , the decimal point moves two places to the left.

5.304 ÷ 102 = 0.05304

Rounding to a given number of decimal places

➢ Find the target digit

➢ Look at the digit behind the target digit
➢ Add 1 to the target digit if the digit behind target digit is 5 or greater than 5
➢ Copy the decimal till the target number if the digit behind target digit is less than 5
e.g., 3.0251 = 3.03 (2 d. p)
3.0249 = 3.02 (2 d. p)

Simplifying Fractions

Divide the numerator and denominator with the same number at the same time.

6
Converting Fraction into Decimal

➢ Divide the numerator by denominator

3
e.g., = 0.6
5

Converting Decimal into Fraction

➢ Count the decimal places (the number of digits behind the decimal point)
➢ Write 10 if you find only one decimal place, write 100 if you find two decimal places in
the denominator
➢ Copy the digits from the decimal given in the question without the decimal point
➢ Simplify the fraction as much as possible
84 21
e.g., 0.84 = 100 = 25

Converting Fraction into Percentage

➢ Multiply the given fraction by 100%

➢ Cancel the numerator and denominator where necessary
2 2
e.g., = 5 × 100% = 40%
5

Converting Decimal into Percentage

➢ Multiply the given decimal by 100%

e.g., 0.0257 = 0.0257 × 100% = 2.57%

Finding the percentage of amount

➢ Convert the percentage into fraction by dividing the percentage number by 100
➢ Convert of into × and copy the given amount
➢ Simplify
20
e.g., 20% 𝑜𝑓 300𝑘𝑔 = × 300𝑘𝑔 = 60𝑘𝑔
100

7
Comparing the amounts in terms of fractions, decimals and percentages

➢ Convert all the amounts into the same form (fraction, decimal or percentage)
➢ Compare the converted values
➢ Give the answer with the original forms
7
e.g., Rearrange 33%, 5 , 0.958 in ascending order.

33%
7 7
= × 100% = 140%
5 5
0.958 = 0.958 × 100% = 95.8%

7
The answer is 33%, 0.958, 5 .

Addition and Subtraction of Decimals

➢ Write the decimal points of every decimal on the same imaginary vertical line
➢ Add and subtract the digits in the same ways as simple number calculation
➢ Write the decimal point of the answer on the same imaginary vertical line as the given
decimals

Multiplying Decimals

➢ Multiply the digits in the same way as simple number calculation

➢ Count the total number of decimal places in the given decimals
➢ Take the same decimal places in your answer (Always count the number of decimal places
from the last digit in the product)

Dividing Decimals

Division of decimals by whole numbers is similar to dividing whole numbers by whole numbers.
