Dribble Drive Principles & Actions

Principle #1: The Kick Up
● When the basket is being attacked, all players are in the dribble-drive offense
● The goal of the dribble-drive is to get all the way to the basket with intent to
score and/or be fouled
● Drive and kick is an option but not always preferred in the dribble-drive offense
● Start with a sprint step - not a slide - to create more space faster, forcing the
defense to respond
● An attack is immediately followed by a second attack
● It is crucial to keep the lane clear for driving in the Hybrid Attack offense
● Let the dribble penetration begin before relocating
● Window is a clear passing lane for the driver to see a direct pass
● Post is opposite the ball, so the post must relocate to the other side or move
away from the paint when the drive comes to the post player
● Kick-ups should force the defender to go through the passer to closeout

● 1 attacks the basket

● 2 moves from the corner to the

free-throw line extended for an open
shot

● 1 should make a “positive pass” by

waiting to pass the ball until 2 moves
behind 1

Principle #2: The Kick Back

● Kick back differs from the kick-up based on angle of attack
● Ball side wing finds a window for a pass option for the driver
● Off guard fills behind at least 6-8 feet away from the initial attacker
● Do NOT do a negative kick-back, defined as a kick-back on the same side as the
help defender, making the closeout shorter
● To be effective, kick-backs should force the defender to go through the passer to
closeout on the ball
● Players who cut through the lane should fill an open area (e.g. the left corner)

● 1 attacks the basket

● 4 heads downhill towards the ball and

receives a pass from 1

● 1 should make a “positive pass” by

waiting to pass the ball until 4 moves
behind 1

Principle #3: Backdoor Cuts

● Everything has to be determined based on reading the defense
● The player can sell the kick-up move and then cut backdoor
● Find the passing window based on how the opposing post player is positioned
● The post player can make a “T-Up” cut, defined as moving to the “nail” which is
the center of the free-throw line
● The “Hammer Spot” is defined as a wing positioned on the opposite corner
whenever a player drives baseline

● 1 attacks the basket

● 3 moves as if doing a kick up

● 3 then yells “ball!” and cuts backdoor

● Backdoor cuts are most effective when

opposing defenders are overplaying
passing lanes

2-Man Dribble Drive Drills

These drills are an ideal way to start practice or even pregame warmups. It is
important to always go at game speed for all the drills and to emphasize strong passes
and finishes at the basket.

Drill #1: Kick Up

● 1 starts with the ball. 2 is positioned

at the right corner. Coach is
positioned behind 1

● 1 attacks the basket then passes to

2, who is moving behind the ball

● 1 should wait until 2 crosses this

imaginary line to make a “positive”
pass to 2

● Any pass that is made to the right of

this line is considered a positive pass
in this instance

● 2 receives the pass from 1 then

attacks the basket

● 1 receives a pass from the coach to

take the shot

● 1 and 2 switch lines

2-Man Hammer Pass Drill

● The Hammer action was popularized

by the San Antonio Spurs and is a
common set run in the NBA

● This action is intended to generate

an open corner three-pointer

● 1 attacks baseline then passes to 2

● 2 moves to the corner to receive

pass from 1

● Goal should be for 2 to line up

directly to 1’s line of sight for the
pass

● 2 takes the shot. 1 relocates to 2’s

previous spot to receive the pass
from coach to take the shot

3-Man Backdoor/Hammer Pass Drill

● 1 starts with the ball and attacks right

● 2 fakes going up to the wing and

instead cuts backdoor

● 1 passes to 2 then moves to the end of

2’s line

● 2 passes to 3 then moves to the end of

3’s line

● 3 takes the shot and moves to the end

of 1’s line

Tip: High school age players can practice jumping out of bounds as they make
