MAT351Y, 2024-2025
Homework 1, due Tue Sept 17, 2024

1. Solve the following problems from the book of W. Strauss: PDEs, an Introduc-
tion.
Section 1.3., page 19, problem 9
Section 1.5, page 27, problems 1, 3, 4
Section 1.6, page 31 , problem 5

2. Consider the second order nonlinear PDE

(1 + u2y )uxx − 2ux uy uxy + (1 + u2x )uyy = 0.
This is a PDE appearing in the theory√of minimal surfaces.
Assume that u(x, y) = h(r) where r = x2 + y 2 , i.e., we assume that u depends
only on the radial variable r and not on the angle variable. We say that ‘u is
radially symmetric’.
(a) Show that the function h satisfies
rh00 + h0 (1 + (h0 )2 ) = 0. (1)
(b) Write the general solution of equation (1).

3. Let u(x, t) = (f 0 )−1 x
t
, where f is a C 2 function such that f 0 is invertible.
Show that u solves
ut + f (u)x = 0
on the domain D = {(x, t), t > 0} of R2 .

4. (This question is optional)

(a) Show that, for any constant c > 0, the function
√
c c

2
u(x, t) = sech (x − ct)
2 2
is a solution of the Korteweg-de Vries equation
ut + uxxx − 6uux = 0.

Here ‘sech’ is the hyperbolic secant function: sech x = .
cosh x
(b) Using some software, plot the solution for c = 1 and various times, for
example t = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4. At any fixed t, u(x, t) is the shape of the wave,
propagating at velocity c. Observe the relation between the shape and the
velocity of the solution and comment.
(c) This solution is called a soliton. It plays an important role in the theory of
nonlinear PDEs.
