Final Exam: AMATH 353 Partial Differential Equations and Fourier Analysis Bernard Deconinck Spring 2014

This document contains a final exam for the course AMATH 353: Partial Differential Equations and Fourier Analysis. The exam consists of 7 multi-part problems testing concepts related to partial differential equations, characteristics, Fourier series, and initial/boundary value problems for various PDEs including the heat equation, wave equation, and advection equation. Students are asked to determine properties of solutions, draw graphs, find explicit solutions, and sketch characteristics and shock lines.

1. For the following statements, answer true or false. Show your logic.

(a) The equation ut + xux = 12 is nonlinear.

(b) The profile u(x, t) = 3 arctan(ex−7t ) is a traveling wave.
(c) u(x, t) = ∞ −n2 t
P
n=1 an e sin(nx) is a solution of the heat equation ut = uxx .

2. Consider the partial differential equation

ψt = 2ψ − iψx + ψxx .

(a) Find its dispersion relation.

(b) Is this equation dispersive?
(c) If not dispersive, is there growth or decay? If there is growth, what is the
period of the solution you expect to see? If dispersive, find its phase and
group velocity.

3. Consider the wave equation

utt = uxx , x ∈ (0, 2), t > 0,

x x ∈ (0, 1),
u(x, 0) =
1−x x ∈ (1, 2),
ut (x, 0) = 0, x ∈ R,
u(0, t) = 0, t > 0,
ux (2, t) = 0, t > 0.

(a) Draw the initial condition.

(b) What is the value of u(1/4, 3)?

4. Write down the Fourier series of the function f (x) = x, x ∈ [−π, π].

5. Write down the solution of the following initial boundary value problem for the
wave equation

utt − uxx = 0, x ∈ (0, π), t > 0,

u(x, 0) = cos(5x),
ut (x, 0) = 0,
ux (0, t) = 0,
ux (1, t) = 0.

6. Consider the following initial-boundary value problem for the advection equation.

ut + 3ux = 0, x > 0, t > 0,

u(x, 0) = 0, x ≥ 0,
t
u(0, t) = , t ≥ 0.
1 + t2
(a) Find the solution for all x ≥ 0 and t ≥ 0.
(b) Draw the solution at t = 0, t = 1, t = 2.

7. Consider the following initial value problem.

ut + uux = 0, x ∈ R, t > 0,

 0 x < 0,
u(x, 0) = x x ∈ (0, 1),
0 x > 1,

(a) Draw the initial condition u(x, 0).

(b) Draw the characteristics in the (x, t) plane. If there are any shocks or rarefac-
tion regions, resolve them: insert fans and shock lines as necessary. Give the
equation of any shock line explicitly.
