LESSON 10:

THE INFORMATION AGE:

CURRENT ISSUES IN SOCIAL MEDIA
General Objectives

At the end of the discussion, the students are expected to:

1. Familiarize themselves with the brief history of social media

development; and
2. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of social media.
The most important technological advancement of the new millennium is the
rise of social media.

Social media websites and applications are designed to facilitate the creation
and exchange of information in a virtual space.

Through social media, people can easily access any type of information they
need and want through the different gadgets at their convenience.
The Gutenberg Press was one of the
most cost- effective inventions created
during the Renaissance period.

It made a historic impact on society

because people were able to print
hundreds of books copied at a fast rate.
Through it, information spread at a
cheaper and faster rate, thus, making it
more accessible to the public.

Over the centuries, the printing press

was further refined, allowing for
different methods to print and
reproduce texts.

BIBLE
(Mark, 2022)
Gutenberg understood the value of his invention and
believed it would make him a wealthy man, especially after
he printed the Bible in 1456.

However, his chief investor, Johann Fust, called in his debt

early, seized the press, and turned the operation of it over
to his adopted son, Peter Schoffer.

Fust and Schoffer then continued to print the Bible as well

as other works and took credit for the invention of the
press.

MYSPACE
THE RISE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Invention of the personal computer in the

1970s.

The rise of social media was first seen in the

popularization of Friendster in 2002, followed
by Myspace in 2003 and was taken over by
Facebook in 2004.

These sites act as platforms that people use to

talk and interact with each other without the
limitations of time and space.
1. Social media currently plays a large role in the advertising industry.
2. Social media can also help people engage in political matters.
3. Access to social media has also allowed many of its users to enter or create
virtual worlds where they can express themselves freely, as well as share
experiences with others with similar interests.

4. Social media is ultimately used as a means for leisure and most users used it
to connect with family, friends and loved ones.
5. Information dissemination of important current news
1. Social media currently plays a large role in the advertising industry.

According to Croteau et. al (2012), social media is a tool that advertisers use to
promote brands and products.
It can also be used to gain more information about their target consumers because
these platforms allow people to divulge basic personal information such as their
name, age, gender, location, likes and dislikes.
Advertisers can use these pieces of information to their advantage in creating
targeted advertising materials for the products that they are promoting.
2. Social media can also help people engage in political matters.

Over the years, many scholars have documented the declining

trend in political engagements among the youth.

The advent of social media has helped address this problem

because these platforms provide young adults a newer and
more dynamic outlet for expressing their political beliefs and
interest (Keating and Melis, 2017).
3. Access to social media has also allowed many of its users to enter or create
virtual worlds where they can express themselves freely, as well as share
experiences with others with similar interests.

According to Nichols (2017), social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter turned
technology into a “new form of communication where people can virtually meet up with
friends and communicate with them in realistic ways from the comfort of their homes”.
4. Social media is ultimately used as a means for leisure and most users
used it to connect with family, friends and loved ones.
5. Information dissemination of important current news
The easy access to social media also presents its own risks.
1. One primary problem encountered by many social media users is the issue of
privacy and identity theft.
2. Cyberbullying

3. Dangers of sexual abuse online

4. Social media also has effects on the way the society establishes its norm and
ideologies.
1. One primary problem encountered by many social media users is the issue
of privacy and identity theft.

To make an account in social networking sites, a user is required to divulge basic personal
information.
These pieces of information, through a user agreement, become the property of the
company that runs the social platforms and can therefore be used for any purpose that
benefits the company.
2. Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying is also an issue associated with social media. According to the National Crime
Victimization Survey (NCVS, 2013), it is estimated that 22 million students in America
experienced some form of cyberbullying each year.
3. Dangers of sexual abuse online
Furthermore, Zweig et al. (2013) reported on the dangers of sexual abuse online. Among the
teenagers who engaged in online dating or cyberdating, 6% reported that they were sent
threatening messages.

In addition, 6% to 8% reported being pressured to send sexual photos or engage in sexual

acts.
4. Social media also has effects on the way the society establishes its norm
and ideologies.

Social media is often chosen as a tool for asserting social norms, as the platform thrives in
social participation.
T - is it true?
H - is it hurtful?
I - is it illegal?
N - is it necessary?
K - is it kind?
