ATL: Critical Thinking skill

Learner profile: Thinker, Knowledgeable,
Task: Questions based on Criterion A: Knowing and Understanding
Objective:
To develop a thorough understanding of laws of motion, moment of force and Hooke’s law.
To articulate scientific concepts and their applications clearly and accurately using appropriate
command terms.

1 A student puts different weights on four balances.

Which balance will give a clockwise moment?

Ans- B
2 Which of the following is Newton’s Third Law?

A. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

B. What goes up must come down.
C. The acceleration that a resultant force produces depends on the size of the force
and mass of the object.
D. An object will continue to stay at rest or move with uniform speed unless a force
acts on it.
Ans- A. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
3 A student with a weight of 500N sits on the left-hand side of a see-saw, 0.8m from the
pivot point. Another student then sits on the right-hand side of the pivot point.

Which student will balance the see-saw when they sit on the right-hand side of the pivot
point?

Ans- Moment of force Force*Distance

Moment of force= 500*0.8
Moment of force=400Nm
The child with 400N will sit on the right-hand side to balance the see-saw.
4 Four cars of the same mass are shown here.

Which car will accelerate and why?

Ans- Car-B will accelerate because more force is applied to the car to move forward
instead of backward. Newtons’ second law of motion states that if the mass or the
acceleration is high, the force will also be very high since Force=Mass*Acceleration.
Now Car-B is being pushed by 1.5 kN, which is more force than the Car-B pull which is
1.0 kN.
5. A bar of negligible mass is supported at A and loaded as shown in the sketch below.
What would be the clockwise and counterclockwise moments of force at the pivot point,
and in which direction would the bar rotate?

Ans:
1. Moment of force=Force*Distance
Moment of Force=100N*1m
Moment of Force=100Nm
2. Moment of force=Force*Distance
Moment of force=40N*2m
Moment of force=80Nm

100Nm>80Nm

Therefore, the bar will move anti-clockwise.

6. A bar of negligible mass is supported on a fulcrum as shown in the sketch. What force
(F) is required at the right-hand side for equilibrium?

Ans: Anti-Clockwise moment=Clockwise moment

Force=Distance/Moment of force
50N*1m=F*2m
50N=2F
50/2=F
25=F
Therefore, the force required at the right-hand side for equilibrium is 25N.
