Defining time-dependent
materials
Prestressed concrete bridge construction staged analysis
in MIDAS Civil
Construction Stage Analysis
▪ Using stages to control sequences, activation or deactivation of:
− Members
− Loads
− Boundary Conditions
▪ Relative to time (linear analysis only)
− Creep
− Shrinkage
− Compressive strength gain
− Prestressing tendon relaxation
General Procedure
1. Create a model: geometry, materials, sections, loads, boundary conditions
2. Setup groups to be used for activation/deactivation in construction stages
3. Define time-dependent material properties
4. Link the time-dependent material properties to the applicable material
5. Create the construction stages and construction stage control properties
6. Review output
7. Combine construction stage load cases in Load Combos
What creep and shrinkage model do I use?
What creep and shrinkage model do I use?
▪ Built-in Code Parameters, or user define
Understand the results, build Load Combos
▪ CS: Dead Load = All load effects except Erection Loads, Creep, Shrinkage, and
Tendon Prestress
▪ CS: Erection Load = Dead load effect which has been separated from DL by the
Construction Stage Analysis Control Data menu (e.g. DW)
▪ CS: Tendon Primary = Deformations/forces resulting from tendon prestress
▪ CS: Tendon Secondary = Reactions/forces from tendon prestress in an
indeterminate structure
▪ CS: Creep Primary = Deformations/forces resulting from creep strain
▪ CS: Creep Secondary = Reactions/forces from creep in an indeterminate structure
▪ CS: Shrinkage Primary = Deformations/forces resulting from shrinkage strain
▪ CS: Shrinkage Secondary = Reactions/forces from shrinkage in an indeterminate
structure
