CASE STUDY
Ann is talking about her elementary class to a colleague, Sarah.
Sarah: Are you going to use this song for teaching adjectives?
Ann: No, I will not.
Sarah: Really! Why?
Ann: Songs don’t work with this class. Yet, they often do with other ones.
Sarah: That’s weird.
Ann: I see what you mean. I used to love listening to songs when I was
learning English. This class gets so motivated when we do matching exercises.
I don’t know what’s the problem with them.

1. What is wrong with Ann?

2. What should be done?
DEFINING CONCEPTS
THEORY OF MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES

A theory first posited by Harvard developmental psychologist Howard Gardner in 1983. This
theory suggests human intelligence can be differentiated into different modalities. It also
describes the different ways students learn and acquire information. These multiple
intelligences range from the use of words, numbers, pictures and music, to the importance of
social interactions, introspection, physical movement and being in tune with nature.

LEARNING STYLES

Learning styles are the ways that different students learn. A style of learning refers to an
individual’s preferred way to absorb, process, comprehend and retain information by making
sense of new material which is commonly done through sight, touch and sound

FLEMING’S
VARK MODEL
• Designed by Neil D. Fleming, VARK is questionnaire-based research
which is done either on a piece of paper or the questionnaire is
available on the official website of VARK. It is helpful for people who
are keen to find out how they can learn based on their preferences. A
set of 16 objective type questions are provided and based on the
results one gets to know about their choice of learning.
WHAT TYPE OF LEARNER ARE YOU?
Imagine that you are learning how to perform a new physical skill such as riding a bike
or dancing a certain style. In which way would you learn this skill the best?

1. Look at pictures of people performing the skill.

2.Listen to an expert explain how to do the task.

3.Read about how to perform the task in a book.

4.Watch someone else perform the skill and then trying it yourself.
