What is It

VERB TENSES
Verb tense tells you when the action happens. There are three main verb tenses:
past, present, and future.

PAST TENSE PRESENT TENSE FUTURE TENSE

Simple Past Tense Simple Present Tense Simple Future Tense
A verb tense used for A verb tense used for A verb tense used for actions
finished actions. Things repeated actions (habits that will happen in the…
that happened in the or routines), permanent FUTURE.
…PAST. conditions and things that
are always true (general
truth).
For example: For example: For example:

It rained so hard It rains all day. It will rain tomorrow.

yesterday. We build our new house We will build our new house.
We built our new house.

2
Simple Past Tense is used to talk about a completed
action in a time.
The verb rained is a regular verb. We form the
regular paste tense by adding –d or –ed.
The verb built is an irregular verb. It also talks about
the past time. However, their past forms are formed
by changing their spelling.

What are the verbs in the short poem?….

frolics, rollicks, runs, romps, scratches,
catches, chews, chomps, plays, chases, races,
yips, barks, darts, comes, gnaws and squeaks.
Verbs are words that indicate actions. Tenses of
the verbs tell us how an action relates to the flow
of time.
But wait! The main purpose of the tense is to
show WHEN the action happens. These are the
past tense, the present tense and the future
tense.

Use Simple Present Tense to express the idea that an action is

repeated, permanent conditions or general truth.
Time expression can also help in expressing present tense.
Subject + Verb
Plural Subject + Base Form
Singular Subject + -s or -es

The Simple Future Tense is composed of will

or shall plus the base form of the verb.

2. What did they decide to have for breakfast?
3. Why is important for everybody to have breakfast?
4. What did you learn about the subject and verb agreement in the comic strip?

What is It

Let’s talk about Subject and Verb Agreement

Looking at the comic strip, the first problem occurs when words come between the subject
and the verb:
Incorrect: Pancakes with syrup sounds yummy.
Syrup is closest to the verb, but the subject is actually pancakes.
Since pancakes is plural, it requires the plural form of the verb. Therefore, the sentence
should be:
Pancakes with syrup sound yummy.
So, what do we mean by Subject and Verb Agreement?
Basic Rule
A singular subject (she, Bill, car) takes a singular verb (is, goes, shines), whereas a plural
subject takes a plural verb.
Example: The list of items is/are on the desk.
If you know that list is the subject, then you will choose is for the verb.
Now there are rules that we should follow to make the subject agrees with the
verb. This will make you understand them better.
Rules Examples
1. A subject will come before a phrase Incorrect: A bouquet of yellow roses lend
beginning with of. This is a key rule for color and fragrance to the room.
understanding subjects. The word of is
the culprit. Correct: A bouquet of yellow roses lends . . .
(bouquet lends, not roses lend)

2. Two singular subjects connected by My aunt or my uncle is arriving by train today.

singular verb. Either Kiana or Casey is helping today with
stage decorations.
3. The verb in an or, either/or, or Neither the plates nor the serving bowl goes
neither/nor sentence agrees with the on that shelf.
noun or pronoun closest to it. Neither the serving bowl nor the plates go on
that shelf.
4. As a general rule, use a plural verb Example: A car and a bike are my means of
with two or more subjects when they transportation.
are connected by and. Breaking and entering is against the law.
The bed and breakfast was charming.
5. Sometimes the subject is separated The politician, along with the newsmen, is

of the subject. Ignore them and use a
singular verb when the subject is
singular.
6. In sentences beginning with here or There are four hurdles to jump.
there, the true subject follows the verb. There is a high hurdle to jump.
Here are the keys.
7. Use a singular verb with distances, Three miles is too far to walk.
periods of time, sums of money, etc., Five years is the maximum sentence for that

Ten dollars is a high price to pay.

Some of the pies are missing.

Adverbs of Frequency, Intensity,

An adverb is a part of speech. It helps to describe a verb, an adjective and another

adverb, thus creating a better picture of what you are talking about. Through the use of
adverbs, you clearly pour your sentiments and feelings over a matter being discussed
that allows better understanding and connections to your readers or listeners.
Sometimes the clarity, effectivity and creativity of thoughts depends on the presence of
adverbs in the sentence. This lesson will teach you how to write better sentences with
adverbs of frequency, intensity, and manner.
