PROBLEM NO. 2
A built-up wooden beam section is made of two 50 mm x 100 mm sections glued on the lower sides of a
50 mm x 200 mm section as shown. The beam is loaded with 2.4 kN/m on a 5 m simple span.
1. Calculate the maximum moment in the beam
2. Determine the moment of inertia of the beam section.
3. Find the maximum bending stress developed in the beam.
PROBLEM NO. 3
A cantilever beam 60 mm wide by 200 mm high and 6m long carries a load that varies uniformly from 1000 N/m at the free end to zero
at the wall.
1. Compute the maximum flexural stress.
2. Calculate the moment at a section 3.6 m from the free end.
3. At the section mentioned in question 2, determine the bending stress in a fiber 30 mm from the top of the beam section. Also indicate
the type of bending stress.
PROBLEM NO. 4
A beam is made up of a wide flange section whose total depth is 600 mm, width of the flange is 300 mm, flange thickness of 20 mm and
moment of inertia Ix = 1.16x10^9 mm^4. Its web thickness is 10 mm and has a simple span of 9m. A 40 kN/m uniform load is loaded
throughout its span and 200 kN load acting at midspan. Allowable bending stress of the beam is 148.8 MPa.
1.Determine the moment capacity of the beam.
2.Determine the required section modulus without exceeding the allowable bending stress in mm^3. HINT: fb= M/Sx
3.Determine the section modulus of the wide flange in mm^3. HINT: Sx=I/c
PROBLEM NO. 5
A 2.5 m simple beam supports a triangular load ranging from 0 at left support to 10.2 kN/m at right support.
The moment of inertia of the section is 54.17 x 10^6 mm4 with a neutral axis of 75mm from the bottom.
1. Calculate the maximum shear in the beam.
2. Determine the shear stress at the N.A. of the section.
3. Find the maximum shear stress.
PROBLEM NO. 6
Find the moment of inertia about the x-axis for the shaded area shown and the x and y coordinate of its
centroid.
PROBLEM NO. 7
A beam, fixed at a wall, has cross section of 80 mm wide by 250 mm high and length of 5m. It carries a load
that varies uniformly from 1 kN/m at the wall and zero at the free end.
PROBLEM NO.9
A wide flange beam has a maximum shear of 300 kN. The beam has the following properties:
d = 350mm bf = 250mm tw = 12mm tf = 15mm
1.Calculate the shear stress (MPa) at the bottom.
2.Calculate the shear stress (MPa) at B of the flange.
3.Calculate the shear stress (MPa) at B of the web.
4.Calculate the maximum shear stress (MPa).
