Chapter 2-self management skills
Stress Management refers to focusing human efforts for maintaining a healthy body and mind
capable of better withstanding stressful situations. Occasional stress is an unavoidable part of
one’s life. Stress refers to a “physical, mental, or emotional strain or tension”. Small amounts
of stress can be beneficial, pushing us to grow. However, prolonged high stress must be
managed effectively.
Well-managed stress helps individuals see challenges and promotes growth. In contrast,
unmanaged stress leads to anxiety and poor mental and physical health. Stress can arise from
various sources.
Mental: Students may feel overwhelmed by assignment deadlines and exam grades. High self-
expectations can lead to chronic anxiety and stress.
Physical: As children seek independence and become more aware of their appearance,
hormonal changes and health issues can lead to low self-esteem and stress.
Social: Discord in families, peer pressure, and the need to balance friendships can create stress
for children.
Financial: Youngsters may have aspirational financial stress. This may be of becoming financially
independent.
