AUTOMATIC WATER LEVEL INDICATOR

Problem Statement:
Design an automatic water level indicator system
capable of accurately monitoring the water levels
in a tank or reservoir. The system should provide
real-time information about the water level and
trigger alerts when the water reaches predefined
levels. The aim is to ensure efficient
management of water resources and prevent
overflow or depletion of water in the tank.

H
SOLUTION:
Creating an automatic water level indicator involves several
steps, from designing the sensing mechanism to implementing
the user interface. Below is a comprehensive solution that
outlines the components and methodologies to develop this
system.

1. Sensing Mechanism
Ultrasonic Sensor Solution:

Component: HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Sensor.

Operation: The sensor emits ultrasonic waves that reflect off the
water surface. The time taken for the echo to return is
proportional to the distance from the sensor to the water surface.
Advantages: Non-contact measurement, which reduces wear
and tear and is unaffected by water quality.

2. Data Transmission
Wired vs. Wireless:

Option 1: Wired (Simple and Reliable): Use cables to connect

the sensor to the CPU. Suitable for small tanks or when the sensor
is close to the monitoring system.
Option 2: Wireless (Flexible and Scalable): Utilize Wi-Fi or
Bluetooth for data transmission. Ideal for large tanks or remote
monitoring. Components could include ESP8266 or ESP32 for Wi-Fi
connectivity.

3. Central Processing Unit (CPU)

Microcontroller:

Component: Arduino UNO or ESP32 (if wireless communication is

needed).

Function: Receives data from the sensor, calculates the water

level, and determines if the level is within acceptable thresholds.

4. Alert System
Multi-Level Alerts:

Visual Alerts: LEDs that indicate low, medium, and high levels.
Sound Alerts: A buzzer that activates at critical levels (e.g., too

User Interface:

1. Local Display:
 Use an LCD screen connected to the microcontroller
to display the current water level and status
messages in real-time.
2. Web Interface or Mobile App (for advanced
implementations):
 Develop a simple web interface or mobile app that
communicates with the microcontroller over Wi-Fi.
 Allow users to view real-time data, receive
notifications, and configure threshold levels
remotely.

Implementation Steps:

1.Hardware Assembly:
 Connect the ultrasonic sensor and float switches (if
used) to the microcontroller according to their
specifications.
 Set up the alert mechanisms (LEDs, buzzer) and
ensure they are correctly interfaced with the
microcontroller.
 Integrate the Wi-Fi module for Internet connectivity,
if not already present in the microcontroller.

2. Software Development:
 Write the program for the microcontroller to handle
sensor readings, calculate water levels, and manage
alerts based on predefined thresholds.
 Develop the web interface or mobile app, if
applicable, for remote monitoring and control.

3. Testing and Calibration:

 Test the system in various water level conditions to
calibrate sensor readings and validate the alert
system.
 Adjust the software logic as necessary to improve
accuracy and

4. Deployment:
Install the system in the intended tank or reservoir.
Perform final testing in situ to ensure the system
operates correctly unde Actual conditions.

Maintenance and Upgrades:

Plan for regular maintenance checks to ensure the system's

reliability over time.
Consider future upgrades, such as adding more sensors for
better coverage or integrating advanced IoT features for
smarter water management.

This solution combines hardware innovation with software

intelligence to create an effective system for automatic water
level monitoring, alerting, and potentially even controlling
water input or output mechanisms based on the detected
levels.

LITERATURE SYRVEY OF RESEARCH PAPER

ABSTRACTION:
Water scarcity is one of the major problems facing
major cities of the world and wastage during
transmission has been identified as a major culprit. To
create barrier to wastage an effort has been made in
this research, to deploy computing techniques in
creating in order to not only provide more financial
gains and energy saving, but also help the environment
and water cycle which in turn ensures that we save
water for our future. An initiative has been adopted in
this research by embedding a control system into an
automatic water pump controller through logic gate IC,
Resistors, LED, TIP 127, Buzzer and Diode to automate
the process of water pumping in an over-head tank
storage system to detect the level of water in a tank,
switch on/off the pump accordingly the status on tank.

Provision has been made to the pump which makes it

stop to operate and a high signal to the buzzer
connected to the transistor which notifies the user that
the container is full by making continuous repetitive
sound. Thus, the pump is stopped as soon as the
container gets filled. Thus, water level is controlled.
This paper was intended to design a simple and low
cost water level indicator. This is not only for water
tank but also used for oil level and chemical lab. To
design this system, we used transistor as a platform
and local materials for low cost. We tried to design a
system in such a way that its components will be able
to prevent the wastage of water. The whole system
operates automatically. So it does not need any expert
person to operate it. It is not so expensive. This design
has much more scope for future research and
development.
Though it is a project, we hope some modification in
this project will lead to a reasonable diversity of usa

CONCLUSION SCOPE FOR FUTURE WORK

The basics need of human being is water and it is one

of the most important necessarily for all living beings.
But unfortunately a huge amount of water is being
wasted by uncontrolled use and due to our negligence.
Some other automated water level monitoring system
is also offered so far but most of the method has some
shortness in practice. We tried to overcome these
problems and implemented an efficient automated
water level monitoring and controlling system. Main
intension of this research work is to establish a flexible,
economical and easy configurable system which can
solve water losing problems. In the near future as
home automation web based water level monitoring
and controlling system can be designed, through which
the system can be controlled from any place via
internet through mobile phone. This could have
substantial benefit from this research work for efficient
management of water.
