Introduction
 Radial Contouring is a surveying method used to create a
detailed topographic map of an area by measuring elevations
at various points in relation to a central point.

 This technique is especially useful in the planning and design

of projects such as roadways, drainage systems, and
landscaping, where precise elevation measurements are
critical.
Key Milestones
The project involved the utilisation of several instruments and accessories essential for the
successful execution of radial contouring.
The following equipment was employed:

 Autolevel with Tripod: This instrument was instrumental in establishing a

horizontal line of sight, allowing for accurate elevation readings across the
survey site.
 Ranging Rod: Used to mark specific points in the field, the ranging rod
facilitated clear visibility of measurement points from the autolevel.
 Tape and Chain: These tools were employed for distance measurements
between points, ensuring precision in determining the position of each
contour line.
 Leveling Staff: This tool was used in conjunction with the autolevel to
measure differences in height accurately. It was essential for noting the
elevation at various points.
Project Procedure

• Site Preparation: The chosen site was cleared of any obstructions that
could affect the accuracy of the measurements. Key reference points were
established.

• Set-Up of Autolevel: The autolevel was positioned on a stable tripod at a

central location within the survey site, ensuring a clear line of sight across
the area.

• Establishing Reference Points: Using the ranging rod, several reference

points were marked at equal intervals from the central location.
• Measurement Process: With the autolevel set, the leveling staff was placed
at each reference point one at a time. The readings from the autolevel were
recorded to determine the elevation of each point in relation to the
established horizontal line.

• Data Recording: Measurements were carefully noted, ensuring that all data
was accurately documented for further analysis.

• Contour Mapping: After collecting the data, contour lines were drawn
based on the elevation readings. This process involved using the data to
create a visual representation of the topography of the surveyed area.
Project Outcome
The outcomes of the Radial Contouring project were significant in providing a detailed
understanding of the topography of the surveyed site. The following results were
achieved:
 Enhanced Understanding of Topography: The contour map generated from the

collected data illustrated the variations in elevation across the site, revealing

important features that could influence future project designs.

 Application in Future Projects: The findings could inform subsequent planning

and execution of projects in the area, ensuring that considerations for drainage,

landscaping, and construction are based on accurate topographical information.

 Improved Surveying Techniques: The project reinforced the importance of using

precise instruments and methodologies in surveying, highlighting best practices that

can be applied in future field observations.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the field observation on radial
contouring provided valuable insights into the
practical applications of surveying techniques and
the significance of each instrument employed.
The successful mapping of the terrain serves as a
testament to the effectiveness of the methodologies
applied and will contribute to future surveying
endeavours.
