Individual Task: Tourism Impact Analysis Report

Objective:
Students will select a tourism destination and critically analyze its tourism
impacts, focusing on environmental, social, and economic factors as discussed
in Chapters 1-3 of Tourism Impacts, Planning and Management. This task will
help students apply theoretical knowledge to a real-world context and develop
analytical skills by evaluating both the positive and negative impacts of tourism
in a specific location.
Guidelines:
1. Selection of Destination:
o Choose a tourism destination in foreign countries
o Provide a brief introduction to the chosen destination, including its
historical, cultural, and environmental significance.
2. Data Collection:
o Use for relevant legislation, environmental policies, or tourism
regulations that impact this destination.
o Gather additional data from credible sources, such as official
tourism reports, local news articles, tourism websites, and
academic research, focusing on:
 Visitor numbers and seasonal patterns
 Key tourism activities (e.g., cultural tours, nature hikes,
festivals)
 Local economic statistics (e.g., revenue from tourism,
employment rates in tourism-related jobs)
3. Report Structure: The report should be structured as follows:
A. Introduction (150-200 words)
o Provide an overview of the destination, explaining its appeal to
tourists.
o Briefly outline the purpose of the report and the types of impacts
that will be analyzed (environmental, social, and economic).
B. Environmental Impacts (350-400 words)
o Positive Impacts: Describe any environmental conservation
efforts driven by tourism (e.g., funding for protected areas,
awareness programs on local flora and fauna).
o Negative Impacts: Analyze environmental challenges due to
tourism, such as pollution, habitat disruption, water resource
strain, or waste management issues.
o Mitigation Measures: Propose strategies to reduce negative
environmental impacts, such as stricter waste regulations, eco-
friendly tourism practices, or visitor capacity limits.
C. Social Impacts (350-400 words)
o Positive Impacts: Discuss how tourism may benefit local
communities, including cultural preservation, increased social
interaction, and improved infrastructure.
o Negative Impacts: Address potential social issues, such as
cultural commodification, loss of local identity, increased cost of
living, or seasonal overcrowding.
o Mitigation Measures: Suggest ways to enhance social benefits
and address challenges, like promoting community-based tourism
or cultural sensitivity training for tour operators.
D. Economic Impacts (350-400 words)
o Positive Impacts: Outline the economic benefits of tourism,
including job creation, local business growth, and income
generation for the region.
o Negative Impacts: Consider any economic downsides, such as
income inequality, over-dependence on tourism, and seasonal job
instability.
o Mitigation Measures: Recommend strategies to maximize
economic benefits sustainably, such as diversifying the local
economy, promoting year-round tourism, and supporting local
entrepreneurship.
E. Conclusion and Recommendations (150-200 words)
o Summarize key findings from each impact category.
o Provide overall recommendations for sustainable tourism
development at the destination, drawing on the measures
proposed in each section.
o Reflect briefly on the potential future of tourism at the destination
and how it can be managed for long-term success.
Formatting Requirements:
 Word Count: 1,400-1,600 words
