Question 3) (L.O.1.9):
A shaft with two gears is shown in Figure 2. All given dimensions
are in millimeter. The forces on gears are given as:
Ft1 = 2500 N; Fr1 = 910 N;
Ft2 = 6250 N; Fr2 = 2310 N; Fa2 = 1102 N.
The material of the shaft has an allowable bending stress of 80 MPa.
a. Calculate the reaction forces at bearing positions (B and D).
(1,0 mark)
b. Draw the diagrams of bending moments (Mx, My) and torque
(T) on the shaft. Values of bending moment and torque must be
Figure 2
shown on the diagrams. (1,5 mark)
c. Determine the shaft diameter and critical section. (0,5 mark)
Question 4) (L.O.1.12):
A shaft in a speed reducer is supported by two deep groove ball bearing (1) as shown in Figure 3. The
reducer body (2) is fixed to the ground. Two bearing caps (3) are used to support the bearings along the
axial direction. Each bearing cap is assembled to be reducer body by a group of four bolts.
Figure 3
a. The required working life of the bearing is 8000 hours, the rotation speed of the shaft is 250 rpm.
The forces act on the bearings are radial forces Fr1 = Fr2 = 6000 N and axial force Fa = 1400 N along
the shaft axis as shown in Figure 3. The bearings operate in normal conditions (Kσ = Kt = 1).
Select the most suitable bearing type from the following table. (1,0 mark)

Because Ctt < C, the selected bearing 212 is satisfactory. 0,25
(312 and 412 bearings with proper calculations are also accepted with the
maximum score is 0,75 mark as they are not the most suitable bearing type)
