Practice Topics

From specialty areas to research

arenas to cutting-edge medical
procedures, ultrasound impacts
the practice and delivery of
medical care.
Explore the topics below as each
contains medial ultrasound
information, peer-reviewed articles,
research results, helpful resources,
and educational components.

Obstetric Ultrasound
This topic addresses all aspects of
obstetric ultrasound.

Point-of-Care Ultrasound
Point-of-Care Ultrasound, or POCUS,
brings portable ultrasound technology
directly to the patient's bedside. It
provides real-time visualization of
anatomical structures, aiding
clinicians in making immediate
assessments and informed treatment
decisions.

POCUS is versatile, supporting a wide

range of clinical applications from
assessing trauma injuries to guiding
procedures like vascular access and
nerve blocks. Its portability reduces
the need for patient transport and
enables quick interventions in
emergency situations. With no
ionizing radiation involved, POCUS
o!ers a safer imaging alternative,
particularly for vulnerable
populations. Ultimately, POCUS
enhances patient care by delivering
timely diagnostics and improving
clinical outcomes.

Join the AIUM's POCUS community by

you to explore our education, training
guidelines, practice parameters,
o#cial statements, and case
challenges for members below.

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
This topic focuses on the sonographic
imaging of the musculoskeletal
system.

Basic Science and Instrumentation

This topic explores the science and
technology associated with medical
ultrasound, including diagnostic
applications of ultrasound, bioe!ects,
and technological advancement.

Gynecologic Ultrasound
This topic focuses on sonographic
imaging of the female pelvis that
includes the uterus and ovaries and,
when appropriate, the fallopian tube.

General and Abdominal Ultrasound

This topic covers everything from
general abdominal imaging to thyroid,
breast, and more.

Fetal Echocardiography
This topic focuses on the evaluation of
the fetal heart with ultrasound
imaging, including assessment of
structural and functional aspects of
the fetal cardiovascular system and
feto-placental circulation.

Cardiovascular Ultrasound
This topic explores the science and
practice of both cardiac and vascular
ultrasound.

Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound
This topic focuses on the
development of ultrasound contrast
agents and their safe and e#cacious
use for ultrasound examinations.

Dermatology
This topic focuses on applications
and development of ultrasound in
dermatology.

Artificial Intelligence in Ultrasound

Artificial intelligence is transforming
how medical professionals use
ultrasound. Today, artificial
intelligence can assist with
examination accuracy, diagnoses,
measurements, and more. Explore
the growing role artificial intelligence
plays in patient care.

Elastography
This topic covers the use of the
various forms of ultrasound
elastography for disease diagnosis
and monitoring throughout the body.

High Frequency Clinical and

Preclinical Imaging
This topic focuses on the
development of high and very high
frequency ultrasound techniques in
areas such as pre-clinical animal
imaging, musculoskeletal imaging,
dermatology, dental and many other
applications.

Interventional-Intraoperative
Ultrasound
This topic covers both diagnosis and
treatment in invasive procedures,
including percutaneous interventions,
as well as surgical procedures
performed in the operating room.

Neurosonology
This topic focuses on sonography of
the brain, cerebral circulation, the
spine, and all peripheral nerves and
muscles.

Pediatric Ultrasound
This topic covers the use of
ultrasound in diagnosing and treating
children's diseases.

Therapeutic Ultrasound
This topic focuses on the
development and application of
ultrasound for therapeutic purposes.
Topics of interest include high-
intensity therapeutic ultrasound,
targeted drug delivery, blood-brain-
barrier opening, MSK applications,
and neuronal stimulation.

Ultrasound in Global Health

This topic addresses the potential that
ultrasound has to improve healthcare
in limited resource communities
around the world.

Ultrasound in Medical Education

This topic focuses on the integration
of ultrasound into resident and
student education. It addresses
content, modes of delivery, and
assessment of competency of
learners.

Urology
This topic focuses on applications of
ultrasound to the genitourinary tract
(kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate,
urethra, penis and testicles). Topics of
interest include diagnostic evaluation
for infertility, trauma and cancer as
well as ultrasound guided treatment
for these diseases.

Sonography
A diagnostic medical sonographer
uses ultrasound equipment to form
images of many parts of the body
used to help doctors diagnose and
treat many medical conditions.
