body.
It is also the functions of the various in the body of living thing

Board Summary
The Cells: The fundamental unit structure of an organism. It is the smallest unit of the
animal body that exist and function alone.
Tissues of Animals
Tissues is a group of cells of similar form and structures performing specific functions o
producing specific substances in the body. The body tissues include:-
a. Epithelial Tissue: It convers both the internal and external surface of the body. The
tissues perform protective functions
b. Connective Tissue: It joins one part of the body to another and supports various
body structure e.g Collagen (connects bones to muscles and bone to bone).
c. Nervous Tissue: It is responsible for transfer of impulses from one organ of the
body to another
d. Muscles Tissue: Consist of closely packed cells which are contractile in nature e.g
skeletal muscle, cardiac muscles.
e. Blood Tissue: These are made up of fluid matrix (plasma) and blood cells which
include red blood cells called erythrocytes and white cell called leucocytes
Organs and Structures of Animals
A group of tissue structurally designed to perform a common function is referred to as
an organs which means that an organs is made up of different tissues. Examples of organs
are the skin, hair, feather, liver, bones etc, the anatomy of some of these organs are
a. Feather – they are found in birds
a. Functions
1. Movement
2. Maintenance of body warmth
3. Protection against harm or danger
4. A protein source of farm animal
Feather can also be used in the making of pillow and dusters
Structures of Feather
Feathers are water proof and are differentiate into three forms
i. Contour feather: Cover the entire body of the bird with the longer and attached to
the wings are called quit feathers
ii. Down Feather: They grow beneath the contour feather in the adult birds and also
the feather cover the newly hatched chicks. They are soft shafts
iii. Filop lumes: They are hair like feather. They are the whitish thread like projection
usually observed on the skin of the bird after de-feathering
b. Hair
The hair is made up of keratin. It is compose of three layers which are epidermis,
cortex and medulla.
Wool is hair mainly from sheep mohair is produced by goats. The latter has smoother
surface scales than the former. Mohair is soft, lustrous and resistant to strain
c. Bones
Is one of the hard part that form the general framework of the animal body
Function
1. Act as supports for the body
2. Used as animal feed (bone meal)
3. Red blood cells are manufactured in the bone marrow
4. Used for making buttons, knives and umbrella handle.
Bone are made up of calcium and phosphorus in the main. This may explain why farm
animals need these mineral in a large amount

Board Summary
System of the Body
System of the animal body include nervous system, digestive system, circulatory,
respiratory and reproductive system.
Nervous System
Is a vital system in the animals body since it control the entire body in responding and
adjusting to stimuli of all sorts. The system is divided into two main part:-
i. Central Nervous System:- Made up of the brain and spinal cord
ii. Peripheral Nervous System: - Made up of the nerve of it fore and hind limbs and
sense organs e.g eye, ear
The brain is made up of
a. Cerebrum: Largest part of the brain and is responsible for decision making by the
animal and known as computer of the body
b. Cerebellum: It is responsible for co-ordination of all muscular activities of the body
such activities include drinking water, eating of food, walking etc
c. Pons and Medulla Oblongata: It control most reflex action such as breathing, eye
blinking, mouth watering, tongue wagging
The spinal cord which is the second part of the Central nervous system is located at
the centre of the vertebral Colum. The peripheral nerve help to communicate what is
happening in the animal environment to the brain, the linking nerves in the sense organ
carry massages to the spinal cord or the brain.
The Skin
It is the outer covering of the body
Function
1. It regulate the body temperature and it carried out with the aid of the hair, the sweat
gland and fat deposit
2. It serves as a protective covering for the animals
3. It helps in excretion by means of the sweat gland
4. It receive stimuli (heat, cold, pain and touch) by means of the nerve ending and
transmit them to the Central nervous system by means of nerves
