My appreciation extends to my Rector, Very Rev. Fr. Christopher Amadi SSJ and the Dean
of Student, Fr. JudeMary Amgbeye and the Parish Priest of St. Catherine Catholic Church,
Alakuko, Fr. Jude Abulu and his Associate, Fr. Louis Anyanwu for the privilege and the
assistance they all rendered in their capacities to make my apostolic experience a successful
one.
I was posted to St. Catherine Catholic Church, Alakuko for a six weeks Apostolic Work. It is
schedule to begin on Saturday 6th of the July, 2024 all through Sunday 17 th August, 2024 with
a mandate which includes; Spirituality, Liturgy, Church Administration and other activities to
be carried out as peculiar to my place of work necessity.
ARRIVAL
On Saturday being 6th of July 2024 was when I officially arrived my place of assignment at
St. Catherine Church, Alakuko. Although I arrived in Lagos on the 3 rd of July, I went to see
my parish priest the following day and he asked me to resume fully on Saturday. A diocesan
seminarian by the name Augustine Alakija was also sent by the archdiocese to work in the
Parish alongside me.
PRIMARY ASSIGNMENT
Assisting on Sundays and Daily Masses: I ensured that the sacred linens, vestments were
regularly washed and ironed for liturgical use. Also, setting of the chalice, sacramentary and
missal for daily masses were properly done.
Teaching of Catechism: Sundays was fixed for this purpose. The classes were much so they
were divided into various groups and I taught the First Holy communion class.
Visiting the Societies and Organization in the Church: If not all, I have visited most
Societies and Organization in the Parish to see how they run their programs and to correct
things where necessary.
Coordinating the Altar Servers: I am always there with the Altar Servers to teach them
more about serving and their roles, correcting their mistakes and teaching them how to handle
Sacred vessels used on the holy Altar of God to worship.
Talks and Seminars: I was often invited by some societies to give a talk during some of
their programs and also to partake in seminars that they had in the Parish.
Working in the Parish office: I also worked in the parish office, I was majorly involved in
writing announcements and intentions for Sundays, attending to parishioners who came for
various reasons and many other functions in the office.
The challenge I had was working in the parish office, though I had worked there before going
for Spiritual year, it was a lot harder this time because now, I was at the forefront and I got to
handle more cases than I did before and also the catechist and secretary were on leave so I got
to handle more serious cases which in the end I presented them to my Parish priest and some
he will tell me to handle them.
Another challenge I had was in regard to societies, some of them were becoming wax and
their members do not really show the enthusiasm to continue coming so I took it as a task to
visit them as often as possible and to ensure that they have some balance, and they start
becoming active.
Although my apostolic work ended on the 17 th of August, my parish priest asked me to stay
for extra two weeks because the catechist and secretary had not returned from their leave so
he wanted me to cover up for them for the time being. Because of that, my work ended on
Sunday, 1st of September, 2024.
LESSONS LEARNT
For the period of time I spent in the parish, I learnt the following: I learnt to be more sensitive
to my environment especially persons around me. I learnt to be more patient and attentive.
Working in the office also helped me to improve my listening skills. I have learnt to have a
good sense of what is necessary and to be able to differentiate what I need from what I want.
The people of St. Catherine Catholic Church are very friendly, respectful, kind-hearted and
very welcoming. They are very active in the church’s activities, they come early for Masses,
although just about 10% of the parishioners usually come late and the few I observed and
asked, their reasons were due to distance from their house to the church but I suggested to
them that they could try waking up earlier and get things done on time so that they could be
early for the Mass.
The children are also welcoming, they are warm and very friendly and some of them are
smart and inquisitive. Whenever some of them saw me or my fellow seminarian brother, they
always like to engage us in conversations that are most of the times about the sacraments and
doctrines of the church especially the one that they struggle to understand.
Also, her youth needs to be more engaging in the Church they are almost not there in the
church. They hardly come around for programs and even those who came around are only a
particular group of persons, when I met with them, I spoke to them and encouraged them to
step up and be more active.
At the end of my Apostolic work, the parish had a collection done for me and the other
seminarians in the parish as a gesture of appreciation and I was generously sent forth with the
sum of a hundred thousand naira (₦100, 000.00).
I am grateful to all who in one way or the other helped me during these six weeks of
Apostolic work. My experience has been a remarkable one, and I pray to make positive use of
them. Through the mercy of the Most Holy Trinity and the intercession of our Blessed
Mother. Amen.
