ABSTRACT
As tourism is one of the fastest growing industries today, thus within the tourism industry
events are getting more and more important. People have become more interested in events of
all kinds, and will travel far away to participate in events that they find interesting. Events can
offer various economical and social benefits for destinations, and therefore destination managers
can and should employ events effectively in a tourism role. It has become widely accepted that
every community and destination need to adopt a long-term, strategic approach to event tourism
thereby planning and development in order to realize the full tourism potential of events.

This study was launched as a response to the lack of studies on how event tourism
strategies are used in destinations. The study was directed to four Nordic tourism organizations,
and the aim was to explore how these organizations work strategically with events. The main
findings of the study indicate that although tourism organizations have increasingly realized the
potential and importance of events, the extent to which events are used strategically in tourism
organizations varies. Some tourism organizations have integrated events deep into their overall
tourism strategies, and events form their own business area and have their own business
strategy.

In other cases events are included in the overall tourism strategies, however, the work
with events is rather haphazard and other business areas are prioritized. At the end of the study
a model that describes how event tourism strategy development in tourism organizations can be
seen to follow certain stages is developed. In relation to the model, the study suggests that the
stage to which tourism organizations have come in relation to strategic event tourism
management depends on factors such as the ownership structure and resource base of tourism
organizations, city involvement in relation to events, and the capacity and events
infrastructure of destinations.

Engineering Graduates need to earn activity points before they earn their graduation or
they won’t be awarded degrees. Student should earn these activity points by working in rural
places and coming out with technological initiatives to beat the civic crisis in the city and state.

The All-India Council for Technical Education has come up with a 15-point programme
for students to take up to earn stipulated points. All the VTU affiliated colleges have been
informed about this student are instructed to follow the AICTE order.

Apart from technical knowledge and skills, to be successful as professionals, students

should have excellent soft skills, leadership qualities and team spirit. They should have
entrepreneurial capabilities and societal commitment. In order to nurture these qualities, VTU
has introduced activity points to be earned by the students during their academic stay at the
University covering extra-curricular and co curricular activities.

These activities can be spread over the years as per students’ convenience. By the end of
eighth semester, they should have done one of these activities. This is to ensure that the degree
is not only about technical knowledge but students can also have some contribution towards
society and hence students need to take up societal activities.

All students have to earn a minimum of 100 activity points from various activity
segments listed to qualify for the B.Tech degree. Two credits are given for this on a pass/ fail
basis and is mandatory for getting the B.Tech Degree.

INTRODUCTION TO HARIHARESHWARA TEMPLE

Fig 3.1: Harihareshwara Temple

The Harihareshwara Temple, located in the town of Harihara in the Davanagere district of
Karnataka, India, is a remarkable testament to the architectural brilliance and religious significance
of the region. Dedicated to Lord Harihareshwara, a unique fusion of two principal Hindu deities,
Lord Vishnu (Hari) and Lord Shiva (Hara), this temple stands as a symbol of unity and harmony
within Hinduism. The blending of these two powerful deities into a single form reflects the
profound philosophical underpinnings of Indian spirituality, emphasizing the interconnectedness of
various aspects of the divine.

Built during the 13th century by the Hoysala dynasty, the temple is an excellent example of
Hoysala architecture, which is renowned for its intricate carvings, detailed sculptures, and
innovative structural designs. The temple’s sanctum houses a unique idol of Harihareshwara,
depicting the deity with features of both Vishnu and Shiva—a testament to the creative artistry of
the time. The structure is adorned with intricate carvings that depict mythological stories, floral
patterns, and celestial beings,

showcasing the extraordinary craftsmanship of the Hoysala artisans.

The temple’s layout follows the traditional Hoysala style, with a star-shaped platform, a richly
decorated tower (shikhara), and finely sculpted pillars that support the ceiling. Each pillar tells a
story, with carvings of divine figures, animals, and dancers that capture the essence of Indian
mythology and culture.

The detailed friezes along the temple walls narrate episodes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and
other Puranic texts, making the temple not just a place of worship but also a repository of India’s
rich cultural heritage.

Harihara itself is a town of historical and religious importance, situated on the banks of the
Tungabhadra River. The river adds to the temple’s spiritual ambiance, drawing pilgrims and
tourists alike. The temple is also a focal point during various festivals, particularly Shivaratri and
Vaikuntha Ekadashi, when devotees gather in large numbers to seek blessings and celebrate the
divine union of Vishnu and Shiva.

Over the centuries, the Harihareshwara Temple has undergone several renovations to preserve its
historical and cultural significance. Despite the passage of time, it remains a vibrant center of
worship and a cherished landmark in Karnataka’s spiritual and architectural landscape. Visitors to
the temple often leave with a sense of awe, inspired by its serene atmosphere, intricate artistry, and
the profound spiritual message it embodies.

The Harihareshwara Temple is not just a monument of historical importance but also a living
tradition, continuing to inspire devotion and reverence among its visitors. It serves as a bridge
between the past and present, connecting modern-day devotees with the rich cultural and spiritual
heritage of India. For those interested in history, art, or spirituality, the Harihareshwara Temple
