ABSTRACT
With nearly a quarter of India's population being in the age of attending school and college, whether our
demographic situation is an asset for our country or not depends on the quality of their learning.
Knowledge, skills and expertise are the key enablers for maintaining our economic growth momentum,
especially in a scenario of technology-led disruptions like Industry 4.0, where skills and expertise
requirements are everchanging. To keep pace with this ever-changing technology, knowledge skills and
expertise are a must for maintaining our economic growth momentum. Various initiatives have been
undertaken to ensure educational institutions are accessible to everyone in the country and emphasis will
have to be made on lifelong learning in our methodology of teaching.
A school premises with facilities of interest to the students and teachers passionate about teaching,
pedagogy that discourages rote learning will make certain that students stay enrolled. Higher education

empirical and conceptual insights into the ways in which higher education can help to achieve and exceed
the outcomes enshrined in the Sustainable Development Goals.
Throughout the history of humankind, institutions of higher learning have played an important role in
society by educating the elite and producing pioneering achievements in science and humanities. Technical
education is typically offered in post-high-school curricula that are two years in length. are not designed to
lead to a bachelor's degree, and are offered in a wide variety of institutions, such as technical institutes,
junior colleges, vocational schools, and regular colleges and universities.

Engineering Graduates need to earn activity points before they earn their graduation, or they won’t
be awarded degrees. Student should earn these activity points by working in rural places and coming
out with technological initiatives to beat the civic crisis in the city and state. The All-India Council
for Technical Education has come up with a 15-point program for students to take up to earn stipulated
points. All the VTU affiliated colleges have been informed about these students are instructed to
follow the AICTE order. These activities can be spread over the years as per students ‘convenience.
By the end of eighth semester, they should have done one of these activities. This is to ensure that
the degree is not only about technical knowledge, but students can also have some contribution
towards society and hence students need to take up societal activities.
Apart from technical knowledge and skills, to be successful as professionals, students should have
excellent soft skills, leadership qualities and team spirit. They should have entrepreneurial
capabilities and societal commitment. To nurture these qualities, VTU has introduced activity points
to be earned by the students during their academic stay at the University covering extracurricular and

CHAPTER 03
INTRODUCTION
Higher education:
Education in general and higher education is the subject of a great deal of study. Higher education is
the backbone of any society. It is the quality of higher education that decides the quality of human
resources in a country. Higher education includes college and university teaching and learning process
towards which students march to attain the higher educational qualification. Higher education imparts
in-depth knowledge and understanding to advance the students to new frontiers of knowledge.
Higher education also provides opportunities for lifelong learning, allowing people to upgrade their
knowledge and skills from time to time based on societal needs. In the context of formal education,
there are four levels or stages of Education namely Elementary or Primary Education level, Secondary
Education Level, and Higher or University level.
The stages of education after secondary education up to postgraduate of Research degree level
considered as Higher Education. In simple words, Higher Education is the education above the
instructional of the Secondary school, usually beginning with grade 13, which is provided by Colleges,
Universities and Graduate Schools, Junior Colleges, Professional Schools and other degree-granting
institutions.
It is the stages of education covering bachelor’s degree, Master degree, Master of Philosophy Degree,
and Doctorate of Philosophy Degree, etc. Higher education is one sense, can be called the tertiary level
of education, which is the top of the education pyramid. Higher education may be of general education
or non-technical education as well as technical and professional education. Higher education has three
(3) levels of degree such as Ig degree of Bachelor course, 2nd degree of Master course, and 3rd degree
of Master of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy in the Indian context.
The chief aim of higher education is to produce adequate and qualified human resources for the
economy, of such quality and quantity that they are attained to the production activities of the state
and by the way, the State’s social, economic, political, civil and cultural environment become self-
sustained and vibrant. The ultimate objective of higher education will, therefore, be the facilitation of
our graduates and post-graduates is to prepare them to face the Global Competition. (Annual
Administration Report, for the year 2004-05 Directorate of Higher Education, Manipur).
Technical Education:
Technical education can provide a wide range of opportunities in today’s world. It can be said that
today’s technology depends on a country’s most important resource – skilled workers. A technically
sound population can contribute to a country’s overall economy by being a part of manufacturing,
designing, developing, and maintaining goods and services.
Technical education covers engineering, architecture, management, planning, applied sciences, and
other related fields. It helps to prepare students for a career where they can apply scientific and
technical principles to create solutions. Technical education focuses on providing training and
imparting knowledge for specific purposes that help to build or improve one’s career. The field helps
in understanding the fundamentals of how things work and how they can be designed/manufactured
from the ground up.
In order to become a technically skilled worker, one would need to learn subjects such as
mathematics, physics, chemistry, electronics, engineering, and other applied sciences. Today, the
demand for people with technical skills has increased exponentially, due to the growth of technology
and innovations. And demand is only set to grow vertically. Development, in terms of both industrial
as well as technical, is bound to be an offshoot of great technical education.
• Data Scientist – A Data Scientist makes use of available data to form meaningful insights and to
derive information that is valuable in one sense or another. They make use of multiple disciplines
including mathematics, computing, algorithms, and others for the purpose of gleaning information.
• Machine Learning Engineer – Machine Learning Engineers are responsible for designing and
developing artificial intelligence-based approaches that can help to simplify tasks or to perform
complex computations.
• Economist – Economists help to formulate economic models and policies using their knowledge
of how an economy should work, based on their observations of markets or financial systems.
• Programmer – Programmers write pieces of code (sometimes known as programs or source code)
that become part of the software or any other electronically transmitted media that are used by
people, across different platforms. Programs connect the underlying hardware of a device with the
software that users interact with.
• Social Media/Digital Media Marketing and Strategy Specialist – Without actively promoting
ideas and services on the Internet, it is virtually impossible to turn a venture into one that is
successful. Social media marketing and strategy specialists understand their products and services
and study their clientele so that they know how and when to promote their offerings.
• Manufacturing – Manufacturing involves a whole lot of complex processes and requires those
who can handle machinery, equipment, computers, and other systems. It also requires one to be
technically sound and to have a sharp eye for detail.
• Robotics Specialist – Robotics specialists design, maintain and manufacture robots that are
industrial, commercial, or personal variants. They need to be experts in robotics, electronics,
mathematics, computational models, artificial intelligence, and systems engineering.
• Agriculture – Agriculturists engage in agricultural activities where they cultivate and harvest
crops. To achieve better results, agriculturists need to have knowledge about scientific methods of
farming and understand how the market works in order to sell crops at competitive prices.
• Technical Writer – Technical writers need to be on top of their game to write about the latest
technological trends. They also need to possess great communication skills to convey technical
details in layman terms since most of the readers would be technology enthusiasts and not experts.
• Computer Hardware Engineer – They partake in the research, design, and development of
hardware components. Without hardware engineers, it is impossible to imagine the current
technological growth that we enjoy.
Vocational Education:
Vocational education can be a lucrative opportunity for students looking to learn new skills and secure
a job faster. These programmes are incredibly diverse and can help you become an expert in a
specialized field, like welding or graphic designing. Learning about these educational opportunities
can prepare you to find and pursue a vocational job that aligns with your career goals and endeavors.
In this article, we answer the question, "What is vocational education?" and review why it is
important, explore the differences between vocational and traditional education and examine different
types of vocational programmes.
Vocational education is any type of training, usually in the form of courses and hands-on instructional
lessons, that teaches students the specialized skills required to perform a specific job. These types of
programmes usually forgo traditional academic-based lessons in favor of hands-on learning. Students
learn the fundamentals and capabilities of a specific occupation under the supervision of an active
and highly experienced professional.
Why is it important?
Vocational education is important because it provides a student with marketable skills in a relatively
short amount of time. Some vocational programmes last only a few months, and during that time, not
only is a student learning from their courses, but they are also working on actual jobs with a skilled
mentor figure. This allows them to develop beneficial professional connections and have the chance
to gain employment much more quickly than a standard university student. Vocational education is
also important because trade skills are incredibly valuable, and people are likely always going to need
the expertise of a tradesperson.
Programme focus:
Vocational educational programmes focus on teaching students trade skills that they can immediately
apply to a specific job. These could include technical skills for jobs like plumbers, electricians,
cosmetologists and firefighters. In contrast, university educational programmes typically focus more
on teaching students.
theories and concepts. With less focus on immediately applicable skills, these students gain more
academic knowledge and a much broader range of information, with varying levels of relevancy to
their course of study.
Time to complete:
Vocational education programmes disregard most of the theory and philosophy-based coursework.
With fewer courses to take, these students can gain their desired qualifications in a much shorter
amount of time. Students can complete many of these programmes in just a few months. In comparison,
traditional university students usually need between two to four years to obtain their qualifications.
Depending on their specific career goals, this number can reach upwards of eight to 10 years.
Costs:
Because vocational programmes have a short duration and fewer courses to complete, they are usually
more cost effective than traditional educational programmes. If you are someone who has a limited
budget, then vocational education may be right for you. Universities can be expensive, even schools
that are non-privatized. This expense can determine what level of education you receive and what job
opportunities you can access.
CHAPTER 04
ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED TO SCHOOL STUDENTS
Career is the most important part of one’s life. To put bread on your dining table, to gain respect from
the society and for your self-satisfaction, a good career is a must. But the definition of “good career”
is vague and depends on people to people.
There is no such thing called as a good career. A career path that is good for one person might not be
necessarily good for other.
ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED:
Guided the students about what career options they have after completing the 10th standard.
1. Following the crowd/friends – This is one of the most common mistakes which most of the
students unknowingly make. Many students just take up any stream because their friends have
decided to take that stream. This can turn out to be the worst decision of their lives. It is necessary
that you chose the stream which you are most passionate about rather than doing what most of the
students are doing.
2. Parental/Societal pressure – Let’s look at a common scenario.
Dad: There is no future in the Arts stream. You have to take up science. Look at Sharma Ji’s son. He
had taken up science stream and he is doing very well in life.
I am sure many students would have faced this situation. I am sure, that many parents would have
given the examples of some Sharma or Gupta to influence the decision of their child. This can lead
to a flawed career decision.
It might look like that science stream is everything. But if you get proper career guidance from an
expert (career counsellor), choosing a career path after 10th will be much easier.

ago, there were very fewer career options to choose from. But now the scenario is completely
different.

counselling, you can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

CHAPTER 05
When you choose a career, you are choosing work that you will likely become an expert in over time
through education and experience. You will probably work in this career field for at least several
years. Narrowing down and choosing a career path to follow is one of the most important decisions
you can make. You should consider different factors before making a final decision about which
career you want to pursue.
• Career affects all aspects of our life - Personal, Social and Professional.
• Career forms our identity. Daily routine is decided by the kind of career one has.
• Our social status, friends, way of living, neighborhood, social circle - all depends on our choice of
career.
• The time that we spend with our family, friends and ourselves depends on the choice of our career.
• The money available for food, clothing, shelter, entertainment etc. depends on the earning we get
from our work/job.
• The happiness or comforts and unhappiness or discomforts we face at our work place depend on the
job/profession that we take.
• If we choose the work of our liking, we do it with perfection and get encouragement and rewards
which boots our self-esteem.
If we select a career which we do not enjoy then sooner or later, it will develop: -
• It leads to various physical and mental problems like headaches and stomachache. acidity. ulcers,
hypertension, nervousness and lethargy.
We may not always get a career of our choice. In case we do not get the career of our choice then we
must learn to enjoy whatever career we have because in large country like India we can't get a tailor-
made career for us. We should learn to enjoy & respect our work as no work is small or big. We
should aim at being a productive & happy citizen and a satisfied individual.
