Q.1 a. Explain the need of commutation in thyristors circuits. 5 2

Describe Class B type of commutation used for

thyristors with appropriate current and voltage
waveforms and derive the circuit turn off time.
b. The circuit shown in Figure 1 has capacitor and 5 3

inductor as 30 µF and 10µH respectively. The initial

voltage across the capacitor is 230 V and supplies a
constant ripple free current of 200 Amp. Calculate
the following parameters.
I. Conduction time of auxiliary thyristor.
II. Peak value of capacitor current.
III. The maximum reverse voltage applied across
the main thyristor.

voltage waveforms and derive the necessary
equations.

b. For current commutated circuit shown in Figure 1 Vs 5 2

= 230V, L=16µH and C = 5µF. Capacitor is initially

charged to voltage Vs with left hand plate positive.
Auxiliary thyristors is turned on at t = 0. Find the total
time for which capacitor current exists. The peak
resonant current is 1.5 times the full load current.
Q. 3 a. A single phase half wave SCR circuit feeds power to 5 2

a RL load. Draw waveforms for source voltage, load

voltage, load current, and voltage across the
thyristors for a given firing angle α. Hence obtain the
expressions for average and rms load voltages in
terms of source voltage and firing angle. Also find the
expression for output current.
b. A 230V, 50Hz one pulse SCR controlled converter is 5 3

triggered at a firing angle of 40o and the load current

off time, average output voltage and the average
load current for R = 5Ω and L=2mH.
Q. 4 a. Describe the different modes of operation of thyristor 5 3

with the help of its I-V characteristics. Enumerate the

various mechanisms by which thyristors can be
triggered into conduction.
b. A thyristor having a latching current of 100mA is 5 2

inserted between dc voltage source of 200V and

load. Evaluate the minimum width of the gate pulse
required to satisfactorily turn the thyristor ON when
the load consists of the following passive elements.
