Motherboard

It is the flat surface board in the system unit. The motherboard connects all the parts
(components) of computer together. It is also called mainboard or baseboard or system board or
logic board. It is the backbone of the computer.
Major Components of Motherboard
PS/2 personal system/ 2.
This is 6 pins mini DIN connector used to keyboard and mouse to the computer
USB (Universal Serial Bus)
It is used to connect mouse, keyboard and other peripheral devices such as; scanner, cameras,
and printer.
Random Access Memory (RAM) Slots
It is a slot for attaching RAM to the motherboard. RAM is the primary memory of the computer.
Type of RAM are; Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (SDRAM) and Double Data
Rate (DDR) for desktop and Small Outline Dual in-line Memory Module (SODIMM) for laptop.
Power Supply Plug in Or Connector
This provides the electrical power to make the computer system operate. It has 20-pins.
Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP)
It is high-speed point-to-point channel for attaching a video card to a computer system.
Peripheral Component Interface (PCI) Slot
It used to connect expansion card and PCI devices such as network interface card, sound card,
modems and video cards
Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) Controller
This connects the hard drive to the motherboard. The types are Advanced Technology
Attachment (ATA) or Parallel ATA (PATA) and Serial ATA (SATA). This controls the hard
drive.
Floppy Controller
This controls the floppy disc as it is connected to the motherboard
Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) Slot
This slot connects modem to the motherboard
Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) Battery
This stores the Basic Input Output System (BIOS) setting on the computer, the battery also stores
the date and time on the computer.
Parallel Port
This is the port that old printers are connected to. It has a 25-pin female Data Bus (DB)
connector
Central Processing Unit (CPU) Slot
This is the slot or socket that connects the CPU to the motherboard, the socket has pin grid array
(PGA). CPU is the processor, the brain of the computer that performs the tasks command in the
computer system. It is also called microprocessor.
