1. Requests
A. Making requests:
- Will/Would/Can/Could you please…
- Do you mind…?
- Do you think you could…?
- Do you think it would be possible to…?
- Would it be possible for you to…?
- Would there be any possibility of…
- Would you be kind enough to…?
- Would you mind…?
- Can/could you… for me, please?
- Could you possibly…
- I’d appreciate it if you could…
- Can/Could I ask you to…?
- You couldn’t… could you?

Examples:
- Can you give me the book?
- Could you please take off your raincoat?
- Could you please take me to the dentist?
- Would you mind opening the window for me, please?
- Would you be kind enough to repair my computer?
- Do you think you could take me to the supermarket?
- Could I ask you to take me home?
- Can you tell me what happened?
- Would you come to my birthday party?
- Would it be possible for you to come here at 8 A.M?
B. Accepting Requests:
- Sure, I’d be glad to…

C. Refusing Requests:

2. Offering:
A. Making offres

- We use can I … to make offers:

Can I help you?


Can I do that for you?

- We can also use shall I …:

Shall I help you with that?


Shall I call you on your mobile?

- We sometimes say I can ... or I could ... or I'll (I will) ... to make an offer:

I can do that for you if you like.


I could give you a lift to the station.
I'll do that for you if you like.
I'll give you a lift to the station.

B. Accepting Offers:

- That would be nice.

- Yes, if you don’t mind.


- Yes, I’d love some.
- Yes, please.
- Sure, thank you.
- That’s a good idea.

C. Refusing offers:

- No, thank you


- No thank you, I don’t want to disturb.
- That’s very kind. Unfortunately, I ____ (reason).
- I’d like to, but ____ (reason).
- I won’t be able to attend.

3. Invitations:

When a situation calls for more formality, use proper phrases like these to maintain an
elevated level of respect and politeness.

- "Would you like" + infinitive verb?

Would you like to attend the performance with me?

- I'd like to ask you + infinitive verb.

I'd like to ask you to attend the open ceremonies next week.

- It would be my pleasure if you would + verb.

It would be my pleasure if you would join us for dinner tonight.

- May I have the honor of your + verb –ing/ noun?

May we have the honor of your presence at dinner on Friday?

- We can use you must … or we must … for a very polite invitation:
