ASSEMBLY 9 – HYDRAULIC CYLINDER

In this exercise, you will work in group to create an assembly of a Hydraulic Cylinder from
scratch: Draw parts, then assemble.

Figure 1. Hydraulic Cylinder

This assembly contains 15 different parts.

No. Name Quantity
1 Lower cap 1
2 Top cover 1
3 Cylinder housing 1
4 Backing seal 2
5 Piston 1
6 Piston rod 1
7 Piston seal 2
8 Piston nut 1
9 Rod guide 1
10 Seal for rod 1
11 Nut for rod 1
12 Fork 1
13 Barrette 2
14 Tension bolt 4
15 Tension bolt nut 8
TUTORIALS

1. Drawing parts
*Disclaimer: The design and dimensions below are simplified for engineering graphic training
purposes. They do not reflect the ones of the actual hydraulic cylinder.

1. Lower cap
2. Top cover

3. Housing
4. Backing seal

5. Piston

6. Piston rod
7. Pistol seal

8. Piston nut
9. Rod guide

10. Seal for rod

11. Nut for rod

12. Fork

13. Barrette

14. Tension bolt

15. Tension bolt nut

2. Assembly step
1. Piston sub-assembly
- Piston & piston seal.

Insert piston rod.

Insert piston nut.

Insert the fork & barrette at the fork.

2. Lower cap and housing sub-assembly

- Lower cap & Barrette
- Lower cap & backing seal (the seal is to prevent leakage)

- Insert the housing, make it touch the seal

3. Top cap
- Top cap & backing seal
Insert Rod Guide

Insert the Seal for rod

Insert the Nut for rod

Now we can connect the housing and lower cap with the top cover (remember to align the two
faces with hole)

Put the piston & rod inside the housing. The only constraint here is axis coincidence, as the
piston will move along the axis. Align the faces of the fork and the cap properly.
Finally, insert the tension bolts and tension bolts nut to the four ϕ12 holes on the top cover and
lower cap.
