this, switch on the unit and then release the C-Arm assembly pin.

NOTE!
When the power is switched on, the tube head runs from an upside-
down position to an upright position.

CAUTION!
At this stage, the counterweight tiles are not yet secured, but the
counterweight cage can be driven up or down.

WARNING!
Do not mechanically force the C-Arm assembly past the vertical
movement sensor pieces in lower and upper parts of the column (on
both sides). The sensors have in this case a very high risk to get
broken.

86501-4AC GE Healthcare 15
4 Installation procedures

5 Drive the the carriage so that the opening underneath the

counterweight tiles and the screw that secures the lower part of
the tile support rod are in level. Then, loosen up the screw a bit.

CAUTION!
Do not loosen up the bolt too much so that it might hinder the
movement of the carriage or drop down between column and the
counterweight cage as into the column.

6 Attach the support rod so that screws align with the slanted side.

16 GE Healthcare 86501-4AC
4 Installation procedures

7 Slide the support rod in (A) so that the screw does not let it any
further. Then drive the C-Arm so that the slanted side appears
(B). Then tighten up the screw (C) to secure the lower end of the
rod.

8 Align the support rod vertically straight. Check that the support
rod is steadily fixed at the lower end and does not move alone,
except with the counterweight cage. Then secure the upper end
of the support rod.

9 Run the C-Arm to the lowest and highest position and listen to
any abrasive or scratchy sounds. If any, then rearrange some key
tiles that seem cause the sound.

CAUTION!
Check that the counterweight cable is not wrinkled or anyhow
damaged and that it can operate without abrasive contact(s) that may
cause serious damage to cable.

WARNING!
The counterweight cover hatch is instructed to be inserted in Chapter
6.6.4. Meanwhile, the area will remain open so be very careful that no
one has his/her fingers there when various movements are done to
check for noises.

4 Installation procedures

Transportation wheels can be installed in case the Diamond unit

needs to be moved to another location.

10 Insert the bolt to the base plate and tighten up a bit. Later on, if
necessary, the bolt can be tightened or slackened with a
screwdriver (right image).

11 Roll the nut all the way down.

12 Attach the rod and lift up the base plate by tightening up the nut-
bolt connection.

NOTE!
Lift the base plate evenly up. Do not tighten up one nut all the way
before starting with the next one.

18 GE Healthcare 86501-4AC
4 Installation procedures

13 When all four nuts have been fixed, the base plate with Diamond
unit is ready for local transportation. After the final location for the
Diamond has been determined and the unit positioned there,
repeat steps 1-15 in reverse order and slackening instead of
tightening.

14 If the floor surface is not level, adjust with a support piece with a
screwdriver. Then attach the plastic cover piece. Diamond base
plate can be adjusted at each corner.

4.3 Installation of the control panel

Diamond control panel can be attached to both side of the radiation
shield or onto the wall.

4.3.1 Wall installation

1 Check that the unit is switched off.

panel rest with a hole. Lay the rest on the round end of support
rod.

86501-4AC GE Healthcare 19
4 Installation procedures

3 Place a lock piece in place and secure the rest support with two
screws, but leave some slack so that the control panel can be
adjusted for angle.

4 Lay the cord into notch and secure the base plate to the wall with
two screws.

5 Slide the rest piece into lower end of the opening of the control
panel. Then slide the control panel downwards until it fastens up
and will not go any further. Be careful, so that the control panel
would not fall off as it is not yet steady.

20 GE Healthcare 86501-4AC
4 Installation procedures

6 Adjust the position of the control panel. When the required angle
has been found, secure lock piece tightly.

7 Plug in the control panel cord to Diamond (at the back of the
Diamond column). The control panel is now ready for use (after
the power switched on after completion of all other installation
work).

4.3.2 Left-hand installation

1 Check that the unit is switched off.
2 Slide in support blocks (to both ends) that are used to fasten the
control panel support plate.

Note that these blocks are not of rectangular shape. For left-hand
installation the block should lean on left. Secure the blocks with
screws.

86501-4AC GE Healthcare 21
4 Installation procedures

3 Insert the control panel cord through the opening in the

counterpiece. Then insert the moving block so that the thicker
section (between the arrow and the line in the right image below)
points to the same direction as the support blocks.

4 Insert two screws through holes aside. Tighten up a bit so that the
screws enter the holes in the moving block and start pulling it
towards the side. This keeps the block steady until it is secured to
the radiation shield. The other end of the cable has a black
control panel rest with a hole. Lay the rest on the round end of
support rod.

5 Place a lock piece in place and secure the rest support with two
screws, but leave some slack so that the control panel can be
adjusted for angle.

22 GE Healthcare 86501-4AC
4 Installation procedures

6 Lay the cord into notch, align the control panel base plate with
the groove in the radiation shield column. Adjust for the height,
then secure the base plate with two screws that force the piece in
the middle of the base plate to the radiation shield. Check that the
base plate is steadily fixed to bear the weight of the control panel.

7 Slide the rest piece into lower end of the opening of the control
panel. Then slide the control panel downwards until it fastens up
and will not go any further. Be careful, so that the control panel
would not fall off as it is not yet steady.

8 Adjust the position of the control panel and then tighten up the
screws that secure the lock piece.

9 Plug in the control panel cord to Diamond (at the back of the
Diamond column).

6 Change the filter and notice that the filter does change from
molybdenum to rhodium. Notice that the timer display changes
from Mo to Rh. Select molybdenum (Mo) filter.
7 Push the Mode selector key (32) until the manual mode is
entered, the AutoPoint light (if active) and density display are
switched off and the mAs display will indicate 16 mAs. Also the
detector lights on compression arm are switched off.
8 Select 25 kV. With the mAs+ and mAs-buttons, increase the mAs
value to 500 and then decrease the display back down to 80.

NOTE!
Press the vertical drive control down and remove the assembly pin.

9 Drive the C-arm to CC and verify that it stops at 0°. If not, then
refer to Diamond Service Manual (86502) for instructions.
10 Test that the C-Arm moves nicely down and up in CC and LAT
positions. Verify also that up and down movements of the carriage
start slowly and then speed up as the switch is held down. If not,
check that the counterweight tiles are inserted correct and
causing no friction. Check also that 4 rollers in carriage running in
column groove are correctly adjusted.

WARNING!
Do not mechanically force the C-Arm assembly past the vertical
movement sensor pieces in lower and upper parts of the column (on
both sides). The sensors have in this case a very high risk to get
broken.

11 Press the REL-footpedal to drive the ECS-mechanism to its home

position and the compression paddle to its maximum opening. At
the maximum opening the compression force reading is zeroed.
Otherwise, if the reading is non-zero, the system will give an
audible warning, an error message and refuses to turn the C-Arm.
12 Test both pedals for compression adjustment. Check that the
compression paddle stops automatically after a pressure of
approximately 200N (45 lbs) is reached. If not, refer to Chapter
7.2.6.1, The mechanical compression limit or Chapter 7.2.6.2,
Electrical compression force limits and speeds.

5 Testing the control functions

13 Check that the breast thickness display and the compression

force changes when driving the compression down.
14 Check that the field light is switched ON when the ‘down’ pedal
is pushed and goes OFF automatically after approximately 40
seconds.
15 Drive the tube head into the front position and verify that the field
light is automatically turned on.

16 Small and large Buckies are delivered with grid block that
prevents movement of the grid during transportation from
manufacturer to customer. Remove the grid block from both
Buckies before inserting them to Diamond.
17 Insert a small bucky and check that the Bucky 18x24 appears on
the LCD display. If not, check that the sensors are sensitive
enough and that the magnet is located at the right place.
18 Repeat previous step for large Bucky, magnification tunnel (with
all magnification factors), small and large paddle.
19 Check with both Diamond buckies and magnification tunnel that
they recognize the customer’s cassettes. If not, adjust from sense
potentiometer on Casopto Board.
20 Check that the cassettes move to the front and back correct. If
not, check that there is no friction is cassette tray movement. Try
this also in CC and LAT positions.
21 Turn the C-Arm and check that the reading in the angle display on
the C-Arm changes.
22 Set C-arm rotation speed offset value at 3 in service program
PrE02, drive the C-arm between LAT-positions and check that it
slows down as it approaches CC-position. After CC-position it will
ramp up speed. After the check, restore the previous speed offset
value.
23 For proper filtration, check that the filter is in place and moves
when filter selection is changed.

6.6 Attaching the covers

6.6.1 Installation of the tube head cover
6.6.1.1 Checking the optoswitches

Check that ParkBack optoswitches are intact. ParkBack movement is

detrimentally affected if any of those is bent.

6.6.1.2 Attaching top tube head cover

1 Attach the cord. Plug it in so that the metal pin plates face
outward, towards the serviceman. Be careful that the cord would
get wrinkled between the X-ray tube and the tube head cover.

CAUTION!
If the connector is attached the wrong way, not only the buttons will not
work, but also the system is at risk of getting damaged.

2 Lower the rear end of the top cover (A). Then, lay down the front
part smoothly on the lower cover (aligns between the align piece
and the edge of the top cover (B)). Check that top cover lies
smoothly (C) before securing it.

3 Secure the top cover with a hex pin driver. If the screw holes of
the top tube head do not match with the support inside the cover
around the X-ray tube (e.g. if something has bent the support), lift
up the top cover and adjust the support so that the holes align
again.

6.6.2 Left side cover

1 Align the left side cover with the carriage and attach it with
screws.

2 Secure the frame.

6.6.3 Right clam shell cover

WARNING!
Remember to unplug the override piece when you finish with the
system checking.

1 Connect the emergency stop cable coming from the left clam
shell to the one on the right clam shell. Make sure that the cable
is well in place and during movement such as the ECS, does not
get caught in any of the mechanical parts of the system.

2 Plug the emergency stop cable into the X15 on Power Board.
Push it in all the way until it locks up.

NOTE!
Mechanical wear transforms the structure of the grease used in C-arm
rotation system to slightly more liquid and this physical phenomenon
may produce an oil drip inside, on the bottom of the clam shell.
Although this drip does not affect the operation of the unit, the right
clam shell contains a patch that captures the drip.

7.1.3 Physicist mode

Diamond software incorporates a service program L: Physicist to

facilitate the testing of various settings and collimation combinations.
The following can be tested:

Grid Grid movement may be turned on or off.

Focus Small focus selection drives front plate in front position.
Large focus selection drives front plate in rear position.
Paddle Select the type of paddle and collimator drives plates
accoring to paddle collimation settings.
Holder Select the type of cassette holder and collimator drives
plates according to holder collimation setting. If no
holder is attached, then collimator plates are wide
open.
kV limits When the kV limit is set off, any kV value from 15 to 39
kV can be used in manual mode

Physicist mode collimation settings for paddle and holder do not

override the actual setting for the holder. For example, if you have
attached a small bucky and you select large bucky and paddle from
Physicist Set-Up, collimation is what is defined for small bucky.
Collimation works the same way as in PaddleLogic so that the smaller
field overrides the bigger one.

NOTE!
Any changes made in the physicist mode settings are not stored and
the system default settings are restored when you exit the service
mode.

7.1.4 Printer/Port setup

Enter into the service mode by pressing kV- and Den-buttons down
simultaneously. Then check for and adjust various system settings in
service program A:System Setup/Communication setup (PrA02).

1 Connect a matrix printer or a PC/Laptop to the COM1 serial port.

2 Set the correct parameters.

The serial connection is an ordinary asynchronous receiver/transmitter

(RS-232). The serial port is initialized in Diamond as follows:

– 1200 baud if printer is connected

– 8, N, 1 (8 databits, No parity [always 0], 1 stop bit)

The effect of the ‘no parity bit’ and the stop bit is a total of two stop bits,
so receiving end must be configured correspondingly.

Port baud rates

• COM 1 (bram, aecdump etc.): 19200
• COM 2 (alpha ID): 1200

The printed label displays the following information:

7.2 Check items

In case of normal service or maintenance: All required checks,
alignments and adjustments must be performed, if necessary. See
additional information about the tests in Service Manual.

7.2.1 Light field intensity

The light intensity is adjusted in the service program PrF03. If

adjustment is necessary, a lux-meter is recommended for exact
adjustment.

Adjust the light intensity at the top of a cassette holder centers of the 4
quadrants to a minimum average of 160 LUX (ISLC’s). Take note of
the effect of the examination room lighting unless it can be totally
switched off.

Outside USA, if a LUX meter is not available, set the collimator lamp
voltage to 11 -11.5 VDC, measured at the Collimator board TP9 to
TP12 or at conductor stands (marked by arrows in the image below).

The halogen lamp lifetime increases when voltage is decreased and

vice versa.

7.2.3 Light field alignment

The x-ray field adjustment must be checked and aligned prior to the
light field alignment. Place a loaded cassette in the holder and position
the corresponding diaphragm.

Enter the service mode by pressing the kV- and density- buttons
simultaneously and holding them the service screen appears.

Select manual mode at 25 kV and 20 mAs.

1 Place a sheet of white paper on the cassette holder so that the

light field can be seen clearly.
2 Drive the tube head forward to turn on the field light.
3 Place some coins at the corners of the illuminated area on the
cassette holder.
4 Make an exposure and develop the film.

The coins outlined on the film should not be more than 5 mm out of the
exposed field and sum of misalignments on opposite sides not more
than 10 mm.

If the light field needs adjustment, refer to Diamond Service Manual

(86502).

7.2.4 Compression paddle adjustment

7.2.5 Film processor evaluation

Test equipment requirement: Sensitometer, Densitometer

1 Turn ON the film processor and let it warm up for at least half an
hour.
2 Run a clean-up film through the processor. This is just a piece of
regular film, which will pick up dirt, etc., which would appear on
your film.
3 Obtain a sheet of the same film type to be used in your Diamond.
Select the color on the sensitometer that matches the color
emitted by the intensifying screen used.
4 Ensure that the emulsion side of the film is towards the light
source on the sensitometer. Expose the two opposite long edges
of the film, waiting 10 seconds between exposures, and run it
through the processor.
5 Measure the film density with densitometer from the unexposed
part of film. This is the base fog and O.D. should be less than
0.20.

NOTE!
Always run the film through the processor in the same orientation and
location.

6 Find the step, which has the density closest to 1.0. This step
number is the SPEED INDEX. Record the average density and
step number on the film and in tables below.
7 Proceed one step above and one step below the step of Speed
Index. Measure and record both densities.
8 Subtract the density value of the step below, from the density
value of the step above the speed index step. This result is the
CONTRAST INDEX. Record this on the film and in tables below.

Mark the DATE on this file for future reference.

7.2.6 C-arm angle display calibration

Run C-Arm to various angles and verify if the angles are correct. If not,
enter the service program PrE01 and calibrate the C-Arm angle:

1 Drive the C-arm to 180°-angle with manual rotation keys.

2 Press Accept-key.
3 The C-Arm drives to 0°-calibration.
4 In case the calibration succeeded, the screen returns to E: C-arm
rotation.

If the calibration is successfully performed, the LCD screen then

indicates ‘Pass’.

In case the calibration was not successful, the LCD screen then
indicates ‘Fail’.

5 Repeat the calibration procedure.

6 If the calibration still was not successful, drive the C-Arm to from
180° to 0° and then to 180° on the other side. When C-Arm
passes the 0° it helps to calibrate.

7.2.7 C-arm autodrive and paddle up function

Automatic drive to pre-programmed projections can be disabled or set

to operate only when the compression is at home position (at upper
microswitch). Enter the service program PrE04 and set the autodrive
functions according to user preferences and as allowed by the
country-specific regulations.

C-arm rotation autodrive - PrE04

Parameter Range Notes
Autodrive On When the C-arm drive button is
pressed once, the C-arm drives to
pre-programmed projection. This
function is disabled with biopsy
paddles.
Off The C-arm drive button has to be
pressed down all the time until the C-
arm angle is reached.
Pdl_up Automatic drive is disabled unless the
compression is at home position.

NOTE!
The C-arm rotation in autodrive mode is also disabled without any
paddle, so paddle (except a biopsy paddle) must be attached before
running C-arm. Remind also the customer about this feature.

Mirror angle

If country-specific regulations allow the mirror angle feature (PrE03),

ask whether the customer wants to enable it.

7.2.8 Compression force display calibration

Check with bathroom scale that if the compression force display

values are correct. If not, enter the service program PrG04 and
calibrate the compression force display:

1 With no compression at all, set the 0N force with the Accept-key.

2 With the bathroom scale, compress to 200N and press Accept-
key.
3 In case the calibration succeeded, the screen returns to G:
Compression force.
4 In case the calibration was unsuccessful, the system asks to
repeat the calibration procedure.

7.2.8.1 The mechanical compression limit

In order to prevent excessive compression on the breast, the

mechanical compression limit can be adjusted clutch can adjusted by
mechanical clutch adjustment screw. Check first with a bathroom
scale if the mechanical compression limit conforms to the regulations
in your country.

NOTE!
The maximum manual (mechanical) compression force must not
exceed 300N by IEC-standard.

If the mechanical compression limit needs adjustment, refer to

Diamond Service Manual (86502), Chapter, 6.4.11, Adjustment of the
mechanical compression limit.

7.2.8.2 Electrical compression force limits and speeds

Diamond incorporates 6 electrical compression force limit steps that

may be adjusted in service program PrG05. These steps are the ones
that user can select at C-Arm control panel.

NOTE!
The maximum motorized (electrical) compression force is limited to
200N by IEC-standard.

Also the compression speeds may be adjusted in service program

PrG01.

7 Checklist prior to use

7.2.9 Compression thickness display calibration

1 Check the thickness display at 4cm with different compression
paddles.
2 When the calibration is performed at some specific force, it forces
the compression arm to move past the horizontal line in relation to
the upper surface of the acrylic (the long dark gray bar).

In order to achieve a proper thickness for clinical use, Diamond allows

± 50mm extra movement past the horizontal level in relation to the
acrylic. This compression thickness is separately calibrated for each
paddle (PrG02) and holder (PrG03) in service programs. Use proper
(70N) compression with the acrylics.

3 Different compression paddles have the surface at different

height that applies the compression to the breast.

Diamond recognizes various paddles, but if necessary, the height

differences can be compensated in service program PrG03.

7.2.10 kV, mAs and exposure time test

If it becomes necessary to test kV, mAs and exposure time, refer to kV,
mAs and exposure time test in Diamond Service Manual (86502).

7.2.11 Grid alignment

The grid is aligned and tested at the factory and should normally not
be adjusted at the site. In case of grid lines, however, it is
recommended to test the grid movement with short exposures. If
alignment is necessary, however, follow the grid alignment instructions
in Diamond Service Manual (86502).

7.2.12 Voltage check

The internal voltages can be checked according to the list in Diamond

Service Manual (86502), Chapter 4.13, Fuses and voltages.

7.2.13 IQC calibration

1 The IQC mode may be switched on in service program PrB05.
Set QA-mode as Exp.

This measures the dose based on the exposure, not on a

sensitometer. Default values are 28 kV with Molybdenum filter.

2 Adjust filter and kV values for QA in PrB05, if necessary. Some

past QA-coefficients are stored in service program PrD07.

For more information on IQC, refer to Diamond Operation Instructions

(86500).

7.3 AEC adjustment

Check the AEC operation before handing the unit over to the
customer. Tables provided within chapters or an AEC calibration table
in appendices can be used to record changes in settings and resulted
O.D. values.

Test equipment needed: Sensitometer, Densitometer, Acrylic blocks,

Film & Cassette. Attach the bucky device.

Enter into the service mode by pressing kV- and Den- buttons down
simultaneously for 3 seconds.

7.3.1 Quick AEC test

Testing procedure:

1 Attach the cassette holder.

NOTE!
Position, for example, an acrylic plate carefully so that it covers the
AEC detector.

2 Select such a kV that will produce the clinically suitable optical

density at 4cm thickness.
3 Make an exposure in the Auto Time-mode with C1 detector.
4 Develop the film.
5 Measure the film density. If the density is not what you wish it to
be, reprogramming of AEC using densitometer is recommended,
but record system settings before changing anything.

NOTE!
Carry out this test once a week using the same procedure all the time.

7.3.2 Recording the system settings

The system settings can be exported in hexadecimal format and can

be viewed and stored in Windows Hyperterminal. For HyperTerminal
properties setting and about how to capture, refer to Diamond Service
Manual (86502).

7.3.3 Basic adjustment

The gain adjustment affects the operation of the Diamond detectors.

One detector (C1) acts as a benchmark and it is adjusted first. Then
the other detectors are adjusted to equalize the output of all detectors
in relation to C1. The graph below describes the detector numbers. It
is useful to know the detector numbers when the exposure data is

1 Ask the customer how dark images they want. Light images have
less information and modern viewboxes can display dark images
better than before. Typical O.D. values are for example 1.4-1.6
2 Enter the service program PrD02 and check that the overall AEC
gain parameter ‘g’ is set to 1.00. (In order to start from the very
beginning, the thickness compensation and kV compensation
values can be set to 0 and r1, r2 and detector-specific values to
1.)
3 Make an exposure in Auto Time mode using the clinically typical
kV (e.g. 28kV) with a Molybdenum filter and a 40 mm acrylic.

make a new exposure. Develop the film and mark the optical
density of the film (=O.D) to the graph below.

6 Draw a line between the two points and read the corresponding
GAIN for the wanted optical density (greater O.D. values
correspond to darker images). Notice that the object is to find the
right gain, so the initial gain value does not have to be 1.00. For
example, if 1.00 falls below and 1.10 surpasses the desired O.D.,
then the correct gain should be some value in-between. Draw
new lines and estimate the correct gain.
7 Alter the AEC Gain parameter ‘g’ in the service program PrD02)
to obtain the desired O.D. (for example 1.6). Diminishing ‘g’ will
increase the O.D. and vice versa.
8 Make one control exposure with Auto Time-mode the clinical kV
(e.g. 26kV) Molybdenum filter with 40 mm acrylic and measure
the O.D. to check the adjustment. Make note of the exposure time
for the thickness compensation in Chapter 7.3.6.

7.3.4 Automatic AEC detector gain adjustment

In case the values for individual detectors must be adjusted, follow the
instructions in Diamond Service Manual (86502), Chapter, 5.2.3,
Automatic AEC detector gain adjustment.

Checking optical densities for each film type

Every detector should be checked and adjusted to each film. Films

can be different.

1 Make an exposure with a small bucky at clinical kV (for example

28kV) and 40mm acrylic.
2 Develop the film.
3 Place the film on the AEC detector location figure (included in the
appendices).
4 Draw detector ellipse on the film and mark its name next to it (not
inside of it).
5 Measure a detector-specific optical density in the middle of the
ellipse and write it next to the ellipse name.

For example the detector C4 would have the following notations (x

marks the O.D. reading):

6 If the acquired O.D. is not within the limits, adjust the values as
instructed in Diamond Service Manual (86502), Chapter
“Adjustment of an individual detector”.

7.3.5 Object thickness compensation

Object thickness compensation adjusts linearity that affects the curve

form

1 Make three exposures with different phantom thicknesses (for

example 20mm, 40mm, 60mm to get short, medium and long
exposure time) and record the corresponding exposure times and
O.D:s. Recommended exposure times would be appr. 500ms,
1sec and 2 second exposures respectively.
2 Use the clinically typical kV (e.g. 26kV), detector C1 and Auto
Time-mode for all exposures.

4 Mark the points to the O.D vs. exposure time graph. Draw a line
through the three points. They should form a horizontal line within
±0.15 O.D.

O.D. values within the limits

If the O.D. values for 20mm, 40mm and 60mm thicknesses fall within
these limits, no thickness compensation is required.

For example, if O.D. for 40mm thickness is 1.6, other O.D. values (for
20mm and 60mm thicknesses) should fall between 1.45 and 1.75. If
not, then adjustment is required.

O.D. values off the limits

If the optical density with 20mm acrylic or 60mm acrylic are different
than the optical density with than 40 mm acrylic, then thickness
compensation parameters have to be adjusted as instructed in next
chapter.

7.3.6 Thickness compensation

The optical density can be

adjusted by thickness specific
compensation parameters which
affect the the exposure by
increasing or decreasing the
exposure time for a specific
thickness value. Curves can be of
various shapes (graph in the
right).

The graph below is a representation of one type curve, which is

adjusted to exemplary target O.D. of 1.6. Adjust the O.D. according to
customer’s desires.

1 If the O.D. at thickness of 4cm is at target, then proceed to next

step. If not, adjust the parameter ‘g’ (instructions in Chapter 7.3.3,
Basic adjustment) so that you obtain the required O.D. at 4cm.

Values from the O.D. vs. exposure time graph in previous chapter
2 Look for the exposure time with which the required O.D. with
40mm acrylic was obtained (in Chapter 7.3.3). Write this time on
the line below or to the AEC Calibration table in the Appendix
section:

Exposure time = This value is ‘P’.

3 Look for the O.D. for the shorter exposure time (for example the
20 mm Acrylic exposure time). Divide the required O.D. with this
value. This value will provide the direction of the adjustment. Test
always for exact values, because the film, processors and
processing conditions vary.

This value is 'r1'.

86501-4AC GE Healthcare 55
7 Checklist prior to use

4 Look for the O.D. for the longer exposure time (for example the
60 mm Acrylic exposure time). Divide the required O.D. with this
value.

This value is 'r2'.

5 Enter the service program PrD03 and choose Thickness

compensation.
6 Press the Next-key on until the ‘P’ for ‘rotation Point’ appears in
screen, then scroll Up or Down to set the exposure time which
has the correct O.D. from the calculation performed above. This
is the exposure time, which is not affected by thickness
compensation (=the rotation point). When the parameter is set,
proceed to set other parameters.
7 Press the Next-key on until the ‘r1’ appears in screen, then scroll
Up or Down to set up the ‘r1’ parameter. This parameter gives
the amount of rotation at exposure times shorter than the rotation
point ‘P’. For example if the short exposure has 12% too dark, a
density enter 0.88 for ‘r1’.
8 Press the Next-key on until the ‘r2’ appears in screen, then scroll
up or down up to set up the ‘r2’ parameter. This parameter gives
the amount of rotation at exposure times longer than the rotation
point ‘P’. For example, if the long exposure has 12% too light a
density enter 1.12 for ‘r2’.
9 Check O.D. after changing the ‘r1’ and ‘r2’-parameters. Readjust,
if necessary.

CAUTION!
Perform the thickness compensation with both filters (Mo/Rh) and all
cassette tunnels (Bucky/cassette holder/magnification tunnel)
separately (especially the combination that the customer starts to
use). DO NOT change the gain parameter anymore. Adjust the density
correction in the service program PrD03 to bring O.D. to same level
with other filter/cassette holder combinations.

10 Accept and exit the screen by pressing the Set-key.

Fine tuning of the thickness compensation

NOTE!
Fine tuning is optional and may only have minor effect to
compensation. It is not necessary to perform if the sensor adjustment
for r1 and r2 is available.

1 Return to the service mode and make two exposures with Auto
Time-mode 27kV so that very long exposure time (four times
longer than exposure time for 40 mm Acr = for example 4-5 sec.)
and very short exposure time (3 of exposure time for 40 mm Acr =
for example 250-300 ms) are achieved. Write all exposure data to
the AEC Calibration table in the Appendix section.

2 Develop the films and record the optical density of the films
(=O.D).
3 Select the adjustment direction of ‘S1’ (affects the compensation
slope at exposures shorter than rotation point ‘P’, when a very
thin breast is examined) and ‘S2’ (affects the compensation slope
at exposures longer than rotation point ‘P’ when a very thick
breast is examined) from the table below.

‘S1’ and ‘S2’ can have values 0, 50, 100, 150...up to 700. The
maximum compensation is 140% or 60% of O.D. in ‘P’ (rotation Point).

4 Enter the service program PrD03 and choose Thickness

compensation.
5 Press the Next-key on until the ‘S1’ appears in screen, then scroll
Up or Down to set up the ‘S1’ parameter. This parameter affects
the compensation slope at exposures much shorter than rotation
point ‘P’.
6 Press the Next-key on until the ‘S2’ appears in screen, then scroll
Up or Down to set up the ‘S2’ parameter. This parameter affects
the compensation slope at exposures much longer than rotation
point ‘P’.
7 Check O.D. after changing the ‘S1’ and ‘S2’-parameters.
Readjust, if necessary.
8 Accept and exit the screen by pressing the Set-key.

7.3.6.1 Lowering mA for small breasts (from sw 1.02.1 and up)

When small thickesses are used, the O.D. may end up too high. This
may happen if high kV values are used with small thicknesses and if
exposure time saturates (exposure time shorter than 0.05s cannot be
achieved with AEC). Tube current can be lowered down to 50% if
small thicknesses are used. Lower mA values can be used with
Buckies and AEC mode only.

If you want to use low mA mode for low thicknesses you need to adjust
preheat values for low mA (LF) as follows:

1 Insert small or large Bucky.

2 Use 4cm acrylic to obtain proper thickness for the adjustment.
3 Enter service program PrD01, AEC setup menu and change
“Low mA limit”-value to 4 cm.
4 In Autotime mode, check that thickness screen displays 4 cm.
5 Enter service program PrI04, Preheat Compensation LF.

86501-4AC GE Healthcare 57
7 Checklist prior to use

6 Select Low mA.

7 Adjust preheat values for kV range of 23 - 35. When oscilloscope
is used, note that the signal level is half than the normal.
8 Enter service program PrD01, AEC setup menu and change
“Low mA limit”-value to thickness level (range 0 cm to 4 cm) at
which the use of lower mA values is activated.

If the limit has been set, for example, at 2 cm, then lower mA values
are used for thicknesses from 0 to 2 cm. If the limit value stands at 0
cm, low mA mode is inactive.

Diamond compensates automatically for the use of lowered tube

current so it does not affect the target time set-up (Chapter 7.3.9,
Target times), however, target times should be set up with full tube
current.

7.3.7 kV compensation

Optical density can also be adjusted by kV specific compensation

parameters, which affect the exposure by increasing or decreasing the
exposure time for a specific kV value.

1 Check the linearity with a couple of control kVs (e.g. low (24kV),
medium (28kV) and high (32kV), using Molybdenum and
Rhodium filter if available). Use Auto Time-mode, detector C1 and
thick enough an acrylic to produce a clinically typical exposure
time at each kV (appr. 1 sec.).

regular pattern close to the required O.D. line in that chart (one of
the horizontal lines at regular intervals) then the O.D. is alright. If
not, measure optical density for each kV, using Molybdenum and
Rhodium filter if available.

5 Plot the received O.D.:s on the chart and check which ones need
adjustment (graph is for reference only). If the line is not linear,
check all kVs.

6 Enter kV Compensation in service program PrD03.

7 Perform necessary changes for all cassette holder and filter
combinations.

If the required O.D. is for example 1.6 at 26kV and 1.3 at 23kV,
increase in service program PrD03 (23kV selected), the factor to 1.2.
Exposure again and check the O.D. Test every other kV values (...23,
25, 27, 29...) and then estimate factors for values in between (...24,
26, 28...).

7.3.8 Auto-kV programming

Adjust density compensations for each filter and cassette holder

combination in Auto kV mode. Set the new values in the service
program PrD03. Usually for the user the density step change is 10% or
12%, but in the service program the step is half of this.

7.3.9 Target times

In Auto-kV mode, Diamond determines whether the calculated

exposure time with the initial kV conforms to target time curve. If the
exposure time (function of compression thickness) is too long or short,
Diamond then increases or decreases the kV value. In order to
produce the target exposure time, Diamond interpolates between two
points of the linear target time curve to find the required kV-value.

If initial kV is badly off, the necessary change in kV might be more than

the kV change limit in service program PrB06 allows. In this case
Diamond will use the kV that is a sum of the initial kV and the
maximum allowed change (+/-) in kV. The initial kV adjustment
instructions are in Chapter 7.3.10, Initial kV tables. The kV change
limit can adjusted in service program PrB06.

60 GE Healthcare 86501-4AC
7 Checklist prior to use

The curve slope is defined with two thickness points, one at 2cm and
another one at 6cm. Target times can be set in service program
PrD05. As the used target time depends on the country, film and film
developer, the parameters have to adjusted according to local
conditions and requirements. For reference only, some users have
used values from 0.4s to 0.5s for lower limit and from 1.0s to 1.6s for
upper limit. If the lower limit is less than 0.2s, the exposure is too quick
and grid lines appear in the image.

The graph below describes how changes in target time limit affect the
curve slope. If the target time limits are set at the maximum values, the
result is the steep curve A. When the lower limit is raised up the and
higher limit lowered down, the curve becomes flatter (B and C) and
vice versa.

NOTE!
If lowered tube current is used (refer to Chapter 7.3.6.1, Lowering mA
for small breasts), Diamond automatically compensates for it. Select
target times always with full tube current.

86501-4AC GE Healthcare 61
7 Checklist prior to use

7.3.10 Initial kV-tables

The initial kV is the first kV that Diamond uses for a certain thickness.
Initial kV tables can be set in service program PrD06 and the kV
change limit in PrB06. Each cassette holder can have its own Initial kV
for various thicknesses (the same for small and large Bucky). The
ideal case would be that initial kV-values would conform to target time
curve values and that there would no need for kV changes.

1 Expose in Auto kV-mode and check the used kV-values at 2cm,

4cm, 6cm and 8cm thicknesses.
2 In service program PrD06, select Bucky, Magnification or Contact.
3 Scroll through thicknesses (at 0.5cm intervals) and set initial kV
for each one of them. Set the values from step 1 and make a
linear estimate for other thicknesses.

4 Repeat the procedure for each cassette holder and filter

combination.
5 Adjust the kV change limit in service program PrB06.

If the initial kV-values are badly off, the target times are not reached
because the required kV change exceeds the adjustment range for kV
change limit. Diamond will make the exposure but the exposure time
will be different than what target time curve suggests. High kV-values
tend to reduce contrast, but it is worthwhile to check if film
manufacturer recommends higher initial kV-values.

7.3.11 Density step feature

Diamond user might want to change of the extent of a change when a

density key of the Diamond Control Panel is pressed. This can be
adjusted in service program PrD03, Densities. The range for increase/
decrease steps range from 5% to 20% (values 5 to 20 in PrD03
screen). Default setting is 10% (value 10)

CAUTION!
The AEC gain is adjusted for one filter and one cassette holder,
normally for the molybdenum filter and with the bucky. The right optical
densities for the rest of the cassette holders with Molybdenum filter
and for all cassette holders with rhodium filter are done as described in
Chapter 7.3.

7.3.13 Printout of system data

Diamond settings (Battery RAM) can be downloaded with a

HyperTerminal(®) by writing bram in command prompt (a sample
included in the appendices).

For AEC and detector-specific data, write param aecdump in the

command prompt and make an exposure.

For instructions on how to use the HyperTerminal(®) refer to Diamond

Service Manual. Settings for hyperterminal software are 19200 bauds,
8 bits, no parity, 1 stop bit and no handshake.

7.3.14 AutoPoint

AutoPoint feature to select the most appropriate detector(s) and

calculate exposure time is useful in following cases:

– consistent selection of the detector based on actual breast

density, not on visual appearance
– more homogeneous optical densities all over breast image are
generated
– when small breasts are examined
– to compensate for very dense (e.g. muscle) area, if it happens
to lay under the detector selected by Auto Point mode

With software 1.02.1 and up, the AutoPoint-feature uses two detectors
(if so desired). The selection of the detector is adjusted through the
Auto Point Coefficient. Software versions 1.01.3 and older have
always used one detector for this measurement.

NOTE!
If detector selection (AutoPoint coefficient < 1.0) is used to increase
density of less dense sections of the image, it will also increase the
density of the most dense areas of the breast.

Parameter settings
A AutoPoint limit value

The Auto Point limit value can be set in service program PrD01 within
range of 50–2500.

The limit adjusts the behavior of the unit on selection of the detector.
High values will make the unit less likely to select a detector under
pectoral muscle (near the chest wall edge), but may select a detector
too far if the dense area is located under C1. Low values may cause

86501-4AC GE Healthcare 65
7 Checklist prior to use

the unit to select the detector covered by pectoral muscle. Value of

700 has proved to be a good compromise, but this may depend on the
local practices (exposure values, positioning, population).

With software 1.02.1, the default Auto Point limit value stands at 700.
In earlier software versions the range for this value was 700-1500. For
small breasts 700 (default) is recommended

B AutoPoint Coefficient

The AutoPoint Coefficient for each pre-programmed mode can be set

in service programs PrB06-09 within range of 0.5–1.0.

After Diamond has selected the primary detector, it can be used alone
to determine the required exposure or together with a secondary
detector. The coefficient is a figure that defines what percentage of the
measurement is achieved with the primary detector. Value 1.0
corresponds to 100% use of the primary detector.

Generally a value other than 1.0 (most often 0.7) is recommended

only if users would object to exposing a small dense area of the breast
to target O.D.

From software 1.02.1 on, the default AutoPoint Coefficient is 1.0.

Coefficient range Amount measured Amount measured

1.0 100% 0%

0.8 80% 20%
0.7 70% 30%
0.6 60% 40%
0.5 50% 50%

Homogenic breast density

If breast density is more or less the same, then the AutoPoint

coefficient can be set at 1. The O.D. values do not vary much (image
H1). Even if the coefficient is lowered to 0.7 (secondary detector
included), the result is about the same due to homogenous breast
structure. In cases below the AutoPoint has selected C3 as a primary
detector (and C2 as a secondary detector).

Breast with dense area

If the breast has an especially dense area (arrowed in images D1 and

D2) and the AutoPoint coefficient set at 1, then the images have likely
the target O.D. at dense area, but the surrounding areas are notably
darker. If the radiologist would prefer lower O.D. in the surrounding
area, the secondary detector should be included in the measurement.
In this example the coefficient is changed to e.g. 0.7 (70% primary
detector/30% secondary detector) and the D2 image would be lighter
than D1. In cases below the AutoPoint has selected C3 as a primary
detector (and C2 as a secondary detector).

7.4 Paddle logic

Diamond PaddleLogic feature enables adjustment of the collimation
and the available AutoPoint detectors separately for each paddle
(image below for reference). For a small biopsy paddle the collimation
(gray rectangle) can be adjusted to allow the exposure only to the
region of interest: the coordinate system and the volume available for
biopsy. Also the AEC detectors allowed for AutoPoint can be limited in
order to block out detector(s) that is/are completely outside of metal
frame of a paddle of small size. PaddleLogic detector defaults by
paddles are listed at the end of BatteryRAM parameter defaults in
the Appendix section:

86501-4AC GE Healthcare 67
7 Checklist prior to use

Ask whether the customer wants to collimate according to the paddle

or to cassette/paddle types and set the collimation up as wished.

NOTE!
Diamond software does not allow the use of the detectors that are not
completely within the collimated X-ray field.

7.4.1 Exact collimation

Diamond detects the paddle and the cassette holder in use. The field
size with different paddle/cassette holder combinations can be
checked with the field light.

Paddle related collimation can be adjusted in service programs PrF01

for rear plates and in service program PrF02 for side plates. Adjust
step values according to paddle size.

NOTE!
If the paddle and the cassette holder suggest different X-ray field
sizes, Diamond will always select the smaller field size.

7.4.2 Detector selection by paddle type

Diamond can select most usable detectors according to the paddle

type. Detectors used with the paddle can be adjusted in service
program PrD09, Paddle Logic. For example certain detectors that are
not completely under a small size paddle can be eliminated from use.

7.5 System customization to user preferences

7.5.1 Pre-programmable modes

Diamond incorporates four pre-programmable modes, which can be

selected according to different situations and needs. The parameters
can be set in service programs PrB06-09. The customizable
parameters are:

– Density steps (-7...+7)

– Offset for initial kV in Auto kV mode (-3...+3)
– Target Time (1/2)
– Name (max. 8 characters)
– Auto kV change limit (0-5)
– AutoPoint coefficient (0.50-1.00)

When Diamond is switched on, name of one of the four modes is

displayed in LCD screen of Control Panel. Set the initial mode in
service program PrB01. Note that the modes are numerically listed, so
check for the corresponding PreProg number in service programs
PrB06-09.

For more customized use of Diamond, refer to Diamond Service

Manual (86502) that has an extensive list of the screen parameters
that can be set by the service technician.

Check List for Maintenance and Installation - Appendix to Diamond Installation Instructions

Planned Maintenance Inspection (PMI) — Mechanical Section

Check list for maintenance and installation
1 C-ARM ANGLE MOVEMENT
• C-arm rotates smoothly all the way without any interruptions
• stops at exactly 0 degree after CC-position button has been pressed. Drive to CC from both
sides.
• test with digital balance meter and compare visually to the column
• stops at exactly 90 degrees after LAT (lateral) position button has been pressed. Drive to
LAT on both sides. Also drive full-rotation (maximum CW to maximum CCW) test with
ECS extended up completely (biggest workload for the motor).
• stops at final safety positioning u-switches on both sides
• movement is quiet, not noisy
• angle display shows right values (0, +90 and - 90 degrees)
• oblique angle stops according to service software settings
• oblique mirror angle works
• values set for oblique angle must be programmed (service program PrE03) as follows:
-195 -275, valid from software 1.01.2 and up
- 15 - 85 , valid from software 1.01.3 and up
• check that the C-arm has no excessive slack at CC-position

2 ECS MOVEMENT
• collimator light will light up when Paddle is pressed
• verify good synchronization with compression; vary paddle speed by pressing with hand
• check for smooth, quiet operation at 180°, +90°, and -90° C-Arm angles.
• press Rel-button of the foot pedal, listen that C-arm movement will not crash on the
mechanical stop. If it does:

1) change release speed in service program PrG01

2) mechanically move ECS release flag so that it will stop earlier

3 STEREO MOVEMENT
• stops exactly at middle, right and left positions
• not interrupted during movement from one position to another
- C-arm in CC-position
- C-arm in left LATERAL-position
- C-arm in right LATERAL-position

• works exactly in CC and both LAT-positions of the C-arm

- on left stereo position
- on right stereo position
- in the middle stereo position (coming from both directions)

• movement is quiet, not noisy

• stereo drive mechanism of the Diamond systems that are used with Delta 32 must be
greased annually

Last update 26.10.2004/EPo Page 1/5

Check List for Maintenance and Installation - Appendix to Diamond Installation Instructions

4 TUBE PARK
• mechanically stops exactly at exposure position (front position)
- mechanical stop can be heard
- will not slide or bounce back (belt tension OK, not too loose)
• verify that the safety clutch does NOT disengage when the tube is in the fully-extended
position
• moves freely all the way to front and back position at following angles
a) CC
b) left LAT position, -90°
c) right LAT position, +90°
• safety stop intervenes and stops the movement when force in CC-position exceeds the force
set by manual clutch spring adjustment
- limit 5 kg
• no noise of scraping covers or rubbing cables during movement
• if finger protection sheets are noisy, lubricate sliding surfaces

5 COMPRESSION
• force ok with 6 different force settings
- normal paddle/bucky
- spot/magn paddle/magn table

• high speed ( 8.5 -9.5 cm/5 sec.), drive down with paddle to test
• slow speed (6 -7.5 cm/5 sec, drive with ECS paddle to test
• during the ECS movement the paddle should move up by max 25 mm
• not noisy
• will not generate force upside down position
• no error message 24 appears when C-arm is rotated upside down (to 180 degrees). If it
appears:
a) check Up Force Limit parameter in service program PrG06
b) calibrate pre-tension

• Autorelease function works

• monitor paddle sensors with Input Port Test when pulling out/pushing in the paddle (Hall
sensor alignment check)
• paddle aligns with chest edge of cassette holder.
• paddle remains flat when pressure is applied.

Check List for Maintenance and Installation - Appendix to Diamond Installation Instructions

6 CASSETTE HOLDER/CASSETTES
• when setting cassette inside, cassette will slide forward to the front position
• forward and backward movement in following C-arm positions is OK:

Small bucky
a) CC
b) left LAT position
c) right LAT position

Large bucky
a) CC
b) left LAT position
c) right LAT position

Magnification
a) CC
b) left LAT position
c) right LAT position

• control panel display varies according to cassette holder:

- no indication on display, when no cassette is inserted
- 18x24, with small Bucky
- 24x30, with large Bucky

Magnification
- will display 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 positions
- cassette moves freely in and out

• verify proper connection between grid and drive mechanism. Check spring-pin tension,
check for pin damage
• check for worn sliding rails and roller bearings. Clean/Lubricate
• check for sharp edges, especially near patient contact surfaces
• check in following positions:
a) CC
b) left LAT position
c) right LAT position

• correct cassette is detected with

1) small Bucky
2) large Bucky
3) Magnification table

When a cassette is inserted into the cassette holder, it starts to slide forward to the front
position. If not, adjust cassette optosensor sensitivity with trimmer on Casopto Board.
