AIR POLLUTION:
Vehicle traffic and smog from industrial plants and households and aviation contribute
significantly to air quality. By 2040, CO2 and NOx emissions from aviation are expected to
increase by at least 21 percent and 16 percent, respectively, according to the EEA. But there are
also natural occurrences, such as forest fires that contribute to global warming.
SMOG:
Smog is a visible air pollution composed of nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxide, ozone, smoke and
other particulates. One can use an IoT system to monitor the nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides,
carbon oxides and other particulates.
The solution is to use sensors to monitor the concentration of gases in the environment which
leads to Smog. The sensors gather the data and provide it to the Raspberry pi. After sensing the
data, the main aim is to transmit the sensed data to the server where analysis is to be done. The
application layer is to analyze the polluted air and do prediction of the quality of air in the future.
After sensing and visualization, one can do the analysis on the polluted air and the gases such as
carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur which lead to Smog.
By the help of the analyzed data, we can control the emission of such gases which leads to Smog.
For Example the causes of emission of such gases are transportation system and industries. So to
prevent smog, the industries should be forced to deploy a mechanism to suppress the emission of
such gases and bound them to obey the environmental rules. Similarly properly maintained
vehicles should be allowed to drive on highways and motorways.
CASE STUDY:
South Korea, the Air Map Korea project is already underway with air quality sensors installed in
telephone poles, phone booths and offices alongside base stations across the country. The sensors
monitor fine dust, volatile organic compounds and humidity in real time.
CONCLUSION:
The pollution challenge is not going to go away anytime soon. But IoT platforms, together with
sensors and networking, can provide a cost-effective way of measuring air quality to improve our
environment. Fed into AI systems, this valuable data can help societies better understand air
quality fluctuations and outline ways of reversing the trend giving us all cleaner air to breathe.
