Introduction to Fusion 360 CAM
Autodesk® Fusion 360 CAM in the cloud is a reality with Fusion 360.
Our Autodesk CAM tools are now completely integrated inside
Fusion 360, enabling the next generation design-to-manufacturing
workflow. Fusion 360 allows you to take advantage of collaboration
tools and shared data storage with unparalleled ease-of-use and
flexibility when creating programs for your milling machining
projects. Fusion 360 is a multi-platform solution that truly
transcends the limitations associated with traditional desktop
workflows.
This guide is intended for CNC programmers or students interested
in learning how to use Fusion 360 CAM to set up, program and post
NC code for their machine tools. There are many different ways to
program the example parts found in this guide. The workflow and
techniques applied are based upon the preferences of many
professional and qualified Fusion 360 CAM Instructors and users.
The examples shown contain optional settings and parameters
which are configurable to suit your programming style or standard
procedures.
This guide has been generated to provide examples for learning
Fusion 360 CAM and is not intended to be referenced as a User
Manual. This guide also assumes you are experienced with Autodesk
Inventor and have a solid background with opening and editing
parts, assemblies and drawings. The student should also be skilled
with machine tool operation, tooling and CNC programming at the
numerical control.
It is the intention of this guide to provide the basic steps a CNC
programmer would need to complete a job using Fusion 360 CAM.

Lesson 1 – Face Toolpath
The facing strategy is designed for quick part facing to prepare the
raw stock for further machining, but can also be used for clearing
flat areas in general.
After generating a toolpath, we can easily inspect results with the
integrated backplot and inspection tool. Controls include simulation
speed and direction, visibility and translucency of tool, shaft, tool
holder, and coloring of rapid moves, lead moves, and cutting moves

Lesson 2 – 2D Adaptive Clearing Toolpath
Adaptive Clearing is a roughing strategy for clearing large quantities
of material effectively. It is unique in that it guarantees a maximum
tool load at all stages of the machining cycle, and makes it possible
to cut deep and with the flank of the tool without risk of breakage.
This strategy is extremely effective for machining cores because it
uses the shape of the original stock to maximum effect when
machining from the outside inwards towards the finished shape of
the part.

Lesson 3 – 2D Contour Toolpath
The 2D Contour Toolpath creates toolpaths based on 2D contour
geometry. Contours can be open or closed and can be on different
Z-levels, but each contour is flat (2D).
You can control lead-in and lead-out with or without tool
compensation. Choose multiple roughing and finishing passes and
multiple depth cuts for any contour. Machine open and closed
contours without creating additional geometry and eliminate sharp
motion with corner smoothing.

Lesson 4 – 2D Pocket Toolpaths
The 2D Pocket Toolpath is generated from chained contours rather
than surfaces or solids. It is possible to define a taper angle for the
walls, pre-drilling and entry positions can also be selected.
Pocket toolpaths machine closed areas with and without islands.
Entry can be selected anywhere on the model and set for plunge,
ramp, or at a pre-drilled position. The special high-speed option
creates smooth toolpaths that allow for maximum tool engagement,
significantly higher feedrates, and reduced machining time and
reduced tool wear.
