Course Description Basic information technology concepts and skills necessary for library and information professionals are introduced. The course covers the fundamentals of personal computer (hardware and software), file management, networking, and databases, as well as introduces Internet and Web concepts, tools, applications, and other emerging information technologies. Social aspects of information technology are also examined. Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will:
Understand how computers and network systems operate. Be familiar with library technology and systems, including databases, OPACs, and ILSs. Have a basic understanding of the Internet, the Web and search engines. Be familiar with current and emerging library technology resources and how to evaluate, buy and plan for technology for a library. Have knowledge of current Web design and usability standards and how to use them.
Class Format This course will be delivered online and in face-to-face weekend classes. A detailed class schedule will be posted on Blackboard along with other course materials, assignments, and related instructions. Please be sure to review the Assignments link in Blackboard to make sure you are clear about the due dates of the assignments and activities. Be sure you are able to log into Blackboard, BuzzIn, ESU stumail (student e-mail) and the iDrive (http://myfiles.emporia.edu/). If you have problems, contact TCS at 1-877-341-5555 or helpdesk@emporia.edu for help. This is a three-credit hour graduate course. Students should expect to spend 8 12 hours a week on readings, assignments and interactions online and in the face-to-face weekend classes. It is your responsibility to read the assigned readings and finish related exercises by their due date. Technology learning takes lots of practice; please start early and give yourself enough time to complete the assignments. Check Blackboard frequently for course information updates.
